For some reason this game had me close to tears at all times. Maybe from the calm voice acting, the music, the story, I don't know but I loved it.

Darren Korb is one of the greatest soundtrack creater... I listened to his soundtrack before I even bought the game, and in many ways it baffles me, that this guy hasn't made a record of his own. He has such a unique style, that transcends background music, and becomes it's own piece of art.

Agreed. So much of video game music is just pastiche of other musical genre, made to convey mood in a crude fashion, whereas the music of Transistor was made to be a central part of the game. Darren Korb essentially composed in the Transistor genre; the music just sound like they are something from that world. Other devs should really take note.

I can't think of a game off the top of my head that has a sound track as goosebump inducing as this one. Like, you are just walking around one of the basic early areas of the game, but the music is just so damn good it makes it memorable. Kinda gives me FF7 vibes, except this music makes me feel feelings I never knew I had, where the FF7 music is just awesome music to jam too.

yhwh88 "Confusing levels" Completely disagree with this statement, I never had a difficult time getting around, and none of the levels confused me in the slightest. The mechanics were a little shallow, but for what they were, they were damn well executed. "Dumb narrator guy." That dumb narrator guy gave the game much needed character, and told the story of the game in a way that's unique to games. How is stopping your gameplay completely for ten minute cutscenes any better? Wait, they're not, because they stop the gameplay. So for the narrator to tell you a story as you're playing, I'd call that a damn good feature compared to the alternative. (I do enjoy cutscenes myself, in games where I care about the story. And not all games should be narrated in the same way this one was.) Some of this is subjective, and some of this is objective. The combat was as boring as you made it, if you were bored because the game was too easy, you could turn up the difficulty with totems that add extra effects. >.>, The only thing I can agree on, is the mechanics weren't very deep.
@Blivia
@Blivia 10 жыл бұрын
yhwh88 It wasn't crammed down my throat luckily, and I pay a little bit of attention to gaming. (I don't seek out everything, but I totally missed Bastion.) How I found bastion? On a 3 dollar sale on steam. It was the first I heard of the game. I didn't claim those were the only two options, but you can't deny that cutscenes are the most common form of storytelling in a game. The narrator doesn't only narrate what your character is doing in the game, he also tells you about the world, what it was like before things went to hell. As to checking every edge, the levels weren't really that big at all.. There was usually only one direction to go, and if you wanted to, you could check the edges for secrets. If you think that's dumb, never play an oldschool shooter like doom. That's far, far worse then what Bastion did. (As far as making secrets hard to find.) Maybe it's just me, but generally I knew where to go, even as the world built around the character. The narrator had a Great voice, and fit the role perfectly, the effect they wanted was there, and wasn't over used. If you want to complain about a narrator, complain about something like SSX Tricky, any WWE game, even sports games can get boring and repetitive with their lines. I can't think of another single action based rpg that tells a story quite how Bastion does. I also don't know every game in existence. (And the narrator doesn't JUST ramble, sure he talks sometimes about random lore, or the character's actions, but he also tells the story as you're playing. You're playing the story he is telling, as he's telling it.)
@mjc0961
@mjc0961 7 жыл бұрын
The narrator wasn't telling you a story as you're playing, though. He was just literally reciting your actions back to you as you made them. I don't need my own actions constantly narrated back to me. I already know. I just did them. That is never the right way to tell a story. "he also tells the story as you're playing. You're playing the story he is telling, as he's telling it." No he doesn't and no you're not. He waits until you've done something and then repeats back to you what you just did. He's regurgitating the story you're playing, as you're playing it. And it's obnoxious.

Pretty good review, but I feel like the story suffered roughly halfway through with the big plot segment I won't spoil for anyone. That specific point screams that Supergiant ran out of either funding or time, and that was a damn shame considering the buildup this game gives you at the beginning. As for all the reading, it makes sense to me in some regard mainly because of the atmosphere. Its a digitized world where information is as easily acquired as a stain on your shirt, and we live in a modern society where its presumed that people keep to themselves and aren't as social as say Bastion's cast where they huddle around campfires. If you want the information you have to seek it and interpret it, much like Red and Transistor did in their journey. It also felt a bit more rewarding to me since I earned that information through blood and ingenuity. Least, that's my interpretation of things.

I wish it did more to grab me. A lot of the elements just stand in opposition to each other. The real time and stopped time parts are like playing two different games, and the abilities aren't made to make the real time part feel satisfying. it is unresponsive, making the best defense stopping time, but doing so forces you into a cooldown period where you can't act on the realtime layer. And though I know it's considered unique, I've seen gameplay gated story content enough times to know that it's a bad idea: Seems good from a developer perspective to promote the player to get more out of the game, but always ends badly from a user perspective trying to actually enjoy the game and have the parts they're interested in, gated behind something they might not. It's like you have to finish the (majority of the) story to start unlocking the nuances of the gameplay and the abilities. And I have evidence of this being a bad idea, because someone basically did it. It's called FFXIII. I thought I'd end up enjoying the gameplay more than I did, since I came for experimentation, but after having some opponents basically not behave the same toward the same ability, I became frustrated with figuring out the ability matrix, as some abilities just suddenly became completely unviable. they don't ease you into a lot of it, either.

I don't really think the gameplay conflicts with the storytelling. Since it has so much interesting text to read, you really spend some time thinking about the story, as much as you spend some time thinking about the strategy you'll choose to fight. I guess that the slower gameplay gives you time to think about everything, and that's really interesting. I liked the review and the video discussing the story you made. Thank you!

From my perspective Transistor is directed completely to more experienced and older players (even if it sounds strange), because Bastion was way too easy. I played Bastion only because I found Dota 2 announcer (made of course by Logan Cunningham) really awesome. And I was sure Bastion will be some complicated game with huge amount of strategies, because that's how Dota looks like. I was a little bit disappointed and I think they realised that people who appreciate beautiful graphics and music are... most of the time older? They need more complicated games to enjoy them all this time. I don't say I didn't enjoy playing Bastion, but I was really missing some good RTS aspect from this title.
@Nixitur
@Nixitur 10 жыл бұрын
Well, Bastion with all ten idols activated is absolute insanity, especially if you try the "Dream" levels. So, if you found it too easy, the game certainly gives you an option to make it way harder. And you saying that older gamers need more complicated games is insulting to both old and young gamers. For starters, kids are _really good_ at figuring out complex mechanics. After all, kids learn really quickly and are also the kind of people who have the _time_ to learn new game mechanics in detail. They might not get all the story's intricacies because they just lack the experience to interpret it correctly, but that's pretty much it. And older gamers need more complicated games? That is *the* most snobbish thing I've ever heard. It's like you're saying that, by growing older, we just stop liking the games we've liked as kids which is just plain wrong for most people. I certainly enjoy a lot of games that might be _really difficult_, but still quite simple mechanically and storywise.
@Elderhet
@Elderhet 10 жыл бұрын
Nixitur Single players games in the past were much harder. You're right, kids are insanely good at video games nowadays, but most of them prefer to play some shitty FPS like CoD.

Elderhet Oh I'm sure you had such better taste when you were their age...
@Nixitur
@Nixitur 10 жыл бұрын
Elderhet I didn't think you could become _any more snobbish_, but clearly I'm wrong. The phrase of the day is "vocal minority". If you're judging the gaming community as a whole by the audience of _one game_, you're going to get skewed results If you play *a lot* of multiplayer games, you might get a _vague_ idea of what multiplayer games younger people play. But again, you're getting a wrong impression. After all, you can't tell how old someone is unless they use a mic. And if they use a mic, you're only gathering information on the vocal minority. Also, do you know what single player games kids are playing nowadays? No, you probably don't. How could you? They're not yelling in your ear about it, so you probably have no idea. And as to the quality of the games they play, a lot of gamers have grown up and have kids themselves. I've read quite a lot of posts where people describe how they played a single player game with their young son or daughter and how they had a grand ol' time, so they're probably not the worst games ever. And for the record, as much as I dislike Call of Duty, it's not a "shitty FPS". People look down on it because it's not realistic like Arma 2 and because Activision are a bunch of dicks in suits, but that doesn't change the fact that tactics are required and there's a very high skill ceiling. Also, if you think single player games were much harder back then, you clearly haven't played a lot of single player games recently. I could give you a list of really hard, fairly new singleplayer games. In fact, I think I will. Bleed They Bleed Pixels Dustforce FTL Cloudberry Kingdom Super Meat Boy Electronic Super Joy Monaco AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA Flotilla VVVVVV Risk of Rain The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom Super House of Dead Ninjas Also, EVERY BULLET HELL GAME EVER! I could go on, but I won't. All these games are really quite tricky. Yes, way, _way_ back when, games were harder by virtue of being plain unfair. It's because they wanted your quarters. And if you seriously want more unfair games, then I really don't know what to tell you. So, you can put that in your pipe and smoke it.
@Elderhet
@Elderhet 10 жыл бұрын
Nixitur Sorry, tl;dr. Anyway, I'm not a single player games expert :D I enjoy MP games more, since I played few of them on semi-pro level. From my childhood experience I only remember I played hard-ass games, even first CoD was harder to master your skills. Anyway, gl hf, no more butt hurt, please

Good review. It was interesting hearing you mention the combat as the cause of the pacing problems - I couldn't be sure whether that was the case, or whether it was down to me having to play in fairly short chunks for external reasons, so it was nice to hear some confirmation that the niggle in my head wasn't unfounded. Also, I fair rushed through the second half of the game so that I could listen to this, worried that it might have some spoilers. Even after finishing it, I am now glad that the video doesn't have any, because I need more time to parse it. This is one of the stories that I genuinely want to work out for myself, but I'd still be glad to see other interpretations once I have my own figured out.

I think supergaint is my favorite developer at the moment, every game has surprised me, hell, bastion to me is perfection, and transistor is damn good, damn near perfection. Really looking forward to what they do next, wondering if they will go back to the bastion way of playing, or completely mix everything up, I just hope they stay away from sequels, or at least overly sequeling as is the industry standard right now, its really starting to get on my nerves.

Your description of trying to understand Transistor's plot also applied, I feel, to Bioshock Infinite's. It's only after two playthroughs that, a few days later, you go 'oh!'. And even then it's probably not the 'proper' story, and just something that makes sense to you.

I was hoping you would spend a little more time talking about the game. Maybe discussing each aspect with more detail, the possible inspirations and how it all comes together. I also wanted to hear some of your theories on the narrative seeing as it's more open to interpretation. Anyway, I am still glad to see you're enjoying it. I wouldn't call Cloudbank a cyberpunk city though. It comes closer to decopunk but it's still not that anti-establishment. I gotta say though, the Klimt imagery, the art deco look, the changing nature of the city and the influential people in it make it really utopian, or rather bohemian and romanticized. I enjoyed it a lot as well and kind of agree on the gameplay and plot not being so seamlessly tied together as they were in Bastion. The ending was sappy but I thought that the events leading up to it were kind of spot on. [SPOILERS] I liked that you never really confronted Grant and Asher but was sad that we never get to see their inevitable descent into madness. That's what a lot of this game is, despite you having the ultimate weapon of ultimate change and power and what not you are never really at the forefront of any event. You're just passing through when everything has already happened and you need to clean it up. You didn't find the Transistor, Royce did and we don't see it. You never see the Camerata kill other people to take their traces, we just hear about it through using their Funcitons. Btw, that part where you have to read, it would've been better if we could just optionally play through the events mentioned in each person's bio. That would've been more involved and possibly could've skipped the whole Sandbox thing. It sounds like I am being too harsh on it but I really am not. I love Transistor and I love how Supergiant have continued their legacy. They really could do anything if they wanted so when they inevitably decide to work on a new game they'll definitely have my support!

I set up the controls to behave like a Moba(QWER abilities, instant cast instead of "select and cast"), and while I really enjoyed the game and it's story, I noticed that some combinations are way out of balance. I used every limiter except for the one that causes you to lose a bunch of MEM, and the game still wasn't that hard. Jaunt+Crash with another high damage ability(I prefer cull+mask) is beyond broken. You can dash through a target(crashing them and dealing increased damage with subsequent attacks) then use your other high damage skill for like a 300ish% dmg bonus(backstab+crash) which will oneshot just about everything. Other combinations allow for huge AoE permanent stunlcoks (Bounce + Breach + Crash). Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed it, but I wish the devs spent a bit more time adding flavour to some of these abilities. As it is now, you can go into the ability details menu, read up on the base damages and bonuses, whip out your calculator and calculate objectively stronger setups.

Thanks for the review! I tried to play the game yesterday, but my laptop can't handle the game for some reason (even though Bastion ran perfectly). The lack of graphic options makes it unplayable for me until I get a new PC or PS4, sadly. As for the combat: It reminds me alot of Frozen Synapse from the footage you have shown, the planning of your moves while also predicting your opponents moves are core to that game. Have you ever played Frozen Synapse?

Let's be clear on something. Transistor doesn't live up to Bastion. It surpasses it. Bastion was a neat indie darling, good for like one playthrough and that's about it. Transistor is so much more.

I'm actually surprised how many people liked Bastion. I personally thought that it was great, but a bit overrated. The ending to that game felt very weird choice, and just a last minute thought to extend the lifespan of the game (since it has theoretically 4 endings, but in truth 2 of those are identical, making it only 3), I personally didn't like it as all. I felt that the game never really gave me a chance to use the weapons I wanted, because on almost every level I got new weapon, that I would end up using throughout the levels until that would be replaced, and then the rest of the weapons would stay in corner with the thick level of dust on them. I haven't yet completed Transistor, since I'd like to chop it down in short 30-45 minute sessions, rather than rush through the game in day or two, like I did with Bastion.

I really don't like the doors between areas they break up the world in an odd way and I don't like that some of them are one way. Also I don't know how I feel about the planning phase of combat.

Yeah fallout sure, but its also arguably closer to vagrant story in terms of the aforementioned mix of real time and turn based combat elements.

I'm doing my first playthrough right now and honestly, as good as the game may be, the combat is realy frustrating for me. After fiddling around with some combinations and trying some combos, it always turns out that they don't work because of their restrictive design. I think Magika did a much better Job

Biggest problem with this game is that it drops you off in what feels like the middle of the story and you don't know what's happening at all. I was completely clueless the first 20 minutes
