Also, I'm a big fan of the UDM-pro. Just to give a little bit of background. I am by no means an IT person nor have any experience dealing with setting up networks. A family member of mine was starting a small business where they needed a phones and cameras in every room. Also because there was not a lot of start up money that mean doing a lot of it ourselves. The UDM-pro is perfect for our use case. We have 13 cameras and 5 UAP-lite connected to it. We also set up freepbx with 12 used cisco 79xx phones. We found refeb two cisco 3750 v2 24ports PoE switches to power everything. This is only 100/100 internet service coming to the building and the main focus was getting everything installed and working correctly than speed.

Unless they updated it the doorbell doesn't work BTW. And I'm not a fan of the UDM pro. It needs way more development. If I could control door access thru the phone system or a control4 setup I would consider it. And yes I almost got hyped until I started reading. As for the power loss, as a firefighter that's what you want, because when we cut power to make entry and RIT were probably going to skip locked doors if it's BAD and end up doing recovery later unless we know occupants are present. I know that's morbid but reality sucks. And we cut power because it doesn't mix well with water 👍

"Fail Secure/Fail Safe". Mags are fail safe. Strikes are fail secure. It is Required by building code to release doors if the fire alarm system has been triggered. I typically stay away from mag-locks or any lock type that can block egress. Strikes and an egress door handle are by far the best, and simplest door config choice. I am curious how this handles a bulk amount of doors. I just finished a 300+ door install. This seems awesome for under 20 ish. I love ui, they have good sw and hw. Cant wait to demo it

The UDM Pro is so cheap that it's fine to just use as a door access controller, or NVM too. You can just choose not to use the gateway functionality on the UDM. I think it makes for a cheap simple appliance!

Hub per door seems like it will get pretty expensive. Per building or the ability to have 10 doors per hub or something would have been nicer. And then the readers could all be POE. Dreammachine requirement is irritating too.
@TheGeekster08
@TheGeekster08 3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty common place to have a single access controller per door, mainly due to the wiring with the locking mechanism. Most systems then allow you to either run a server, or nominate a single hub as the "controller" of the system that the others then replicate off of
@LaDiables
@LaDiables 3 жыл бұрын
That's pretty typical for these systems. There's only so far you can run the 12v wiring for the locks so there's typically one controller per door.
@bjtaudio
@bjtaudio 5 ай бұрын
The hub works with POE+ also, provided you don't exceed 25.5Watts, it will operate cameras and card readers on POE+ but you cannot use the 12V internal supply as well, instead you can use the dry contacts and use the mag lock with an external 12V security supply...this way you don't need to pay thousands for a very expensive POE++ Switch.

My old Job used Unity but it was an older version they had not upgraded in like close to 20 years. It was a dos looking program on top of Windows 3.1 and it was so old they only had one IT guy in a 200mile radius who knew how to fix the server it was connected to (again an old system) so they had a backup server but of course they had their backup system set for every 3 months so when we had a server failure and they had to switch to the backup server we lost 3 months worth of user information and it took my supervisor almost another 3 months to re-enter over 2000 entries back into the system by hand.

As an access control installer.... I'll pass on this especially coming from a company that's barely putting any money into their development teams for existing products. Their unifi line of hardware is barely cutting it for any decent install jobs outside of the small business scenario. Their Edge series is better but still in the same boat. Their Wireless p2p/p2mp equipment is decent. I have a feeling this will go the way of the UAP-EDU, Unifi phones, lights, and solar stuff. It feels like "oh hey the boss needs this at his house lets develop it so it works for his situation but junk it after we recouped the money to make it for him". If you're in serious need of a access control setup check out the Prodatakey equipment. I've had other brands of access control gear installed for 10+ years w/o any issues outside of battery maintenance or vandal repair.

I have the same meter. Great price / feature balance. I've seen several comments about needing the UDM Pro and I'm hoping the will either add support to the protect NVR or release a stand alone access controller. Obviously a standalone controller is not ideal if you have one or two doors but I could see it being useful if you need to setup 20 plus doors. Currently deploying Kantech for big systems (50+ doors).

October 6th when video posted and now December 18th. Looks like Ubiquiti took your input as the "Access" controller is now available on the Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus (CKG2+) as well as the UDM-PRO. I don't like to just have the square box just sitting on a shelf so I picked up the rack mount accessory. I would say that if you're going to purchase a USG, Cloud Key, Protect cameras, etc. then it seems fair to get the UDM-PRO but some might already have a USG and a different camera system, or not using unifi access. I feel that's where the CKG2+ seems to be a good middle ground. I don't have a CKG2 (non-plus) but I figure that the requirement is there for those models because they support a hard drive for video/call recordings on the +. If not performing the recording I'm curious if the firmware would still install on it. Also, had to go to the Ubiquiti download center to get the firmware version that supported unifi talk which has an installer for talk, and access. Protect, and Unifi are preinstalled.
@byzhiphop
@byzhiphop 3 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess it needs the hard drive to store those access videos (unless you can turn that off somehow?) and they just decided to put it on their medium-tier offering for this reason because the CloudKey might've been a bit too slow to handle writing both camera feeds and access video recordings at the same time in their default set-up (with the small 5400 laptop hdd). Now that being said it seems to me that Ubiquiti is stretching themselves a bit too thin with all these updates and product ranges; they're rolling out all these featured and updates separately already on their major devices... I mean the UDM Pro (the last I checked) didn't even get the 6.x Controller firmware yet... And, well, that's basically what has me a bit worried - if they're already this segmented on the rollouts and have this many issues with quality control then they either need to expand their teams or slow down a bit with releasing these products until they're really ready. I wouldn't be surprised if this got onto the NVR as well but having no timeline for when must be annoying if you want to actually deploy these for clients. And with the UDM Pro being sort of a higher end piece of home gear it's pretty weird that they didn't target the NVR as their primary device to release this with.

Caution:- If the system crashes you will be locked out so you will need a key switch to unlock. For high security use a remote garage door relay opener, instead of a key-switch as key switches are easy to force and or pick, plus the Ubiquiti key-switch is not recommended as its not secure, note mounting it at the entrance allows a thief to smash it off the wall to bypass it and connect the wires to unlock the door, not secure!

WARNING the input hub connections and 12V power outputs are not isolated from the Poe supply!! , the -ve terminals are at -54VDC with respect to mains earth, so any device you connect to the hub terminals must be electrically floating. Use the dry contacts if using an external power supply. If triggering the inputs from another system like the remote release use a dry contact of a relay to trigger the hub.

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Love the channel and the content. It is my favourite thing to watch in the Morning with my coffee. I am picking up new and exciting items; I especially like the Linux programs that you use. I use both. I asked about the octopus as it caught my eye. Do you sell these in your swag store, just curious? Thanks again and have a great day. Take care, Curly

Great video. Two questions... 1) can the hub be installed in the it closet and just run a cet6 and 18/2 to the door? 2) can this be used in a door buz entry system? I.e receptionist sits at desk and uses app or web to see and unlock door?

why though? if you really want an access control system, this is going to be the most versatile and the most plug and play... if you have a garage door. otherwise there isn't a product on the market to retrofit your current door to use an access control system that this would work in. scratch that there is one product on the market that i think will retrofit but...

The way Ubiquiti treated Unifi Video and that generation of products does not have me interested in a new first generation of another type of product. Sorry but they need to build trust in their existing ecosystem before expanding into the next biome.

Just have a button at the end of a long wire to the front desk area .... Lawrence was demonstrating it with the PC button that he has hanging off the left hand side of the hub. Will be interesting to see if they extend this to the mobile phone apps so you can open the door remotely.
