Skallagrim

Күн бұрын

** Specifications **
Overall length: 91 cm / 36 in
Blade length: 75.5 cm / 29.72 in
Grip length: 11 cm / 4.33 in
Blade thickness: 6 mm, with a slight distal taper to 4.75 mm near the tip.
Weight: 1163 g / 2.5 lbs
Hilt assembly: Peened
Steel: Unknown, but probably 1075 spring steel?
Price: $250
** Pros / Cons **
Solid construction, strong hilt assembly
Good weight and balance
Very good edge geometry, cuts well
Affordable price, especially for the quality
Unpleasant hand shock when chopping, due to vibration in the grip
Relatively soft steel, can bend (but increased toughness)
Sticky residue in the scabbard
** Verdict **
So far I haven't seen too many budget priced ($200-300) Viking era sword reproductions on the market that I'm comfortable recommending. But this is definitely one of them. It's well made, handles nicely, and can stand up to abuse.
Although this sword is not designed with historical accuracy in mind actually doesn't seem too far off from something like a Peterson type K, and the dimensions are within an appropriate range for the Viking era.
Overall quite a decent sword, well worth the money.

google botnet subject #120543955 I _do_ suppose this is the subject of worldwide debate, as it is the most important issue of our day. However, the sword would easily weigh down the pommel, reducing accuracy and damage. Personally I keep a pouch of pommels at my hip, so I can throw however many I need based on my "ending them rightly" needs. *EDIT: (If you haven't already, look up "end them rightly" and watch skalls video on throwing pommels. It's pretty funny)

Interesting comments on the handshake grip and grip length - I think I'll make another video about this. I try to avoid grips as long as 11cm personally (for this type of sword) as I think it leads to lazy technique - or rather trying to use this era of sword like a later arming sword. And I truly believe that these hilts are designed that way for specific reasons, not just to hurt our hands :-)

+scholagladiatoria It would be really cool to see some sparring matches of your students using Viking-era techniques, if you could pull that off. You could have them use some of the tricks from Thrand's videos.

+scholagladiatoria Yeah, for me the Albion Berserkr pretty much requires a handshake grip to be effective, unless I do kind of T-rex cuts with short reach, but even then it doesn't feel quite right. This one is the opposite, it makes anything but an arming sword style grip uncomfortable.

+Skallagrim Would you say that the pommel is basically the wrong shape? It looks more block-like than it should for the type, but it's always hard to see precisely without handling personally.

Sounds like a very decent starter sword for someone who was looking at getting into functional as opposed to decorative swords. Simple design, good and sturdy so it'll survive mistakes, has the appropriate balance, and the blade is easy to maintain. For 250 bucks, it's not even a massive commitment.

Awesome review, as usual. The "residue" on the end of your blade from the inside of the scabbard is wax. Wax is often used on wood to help preserve it, and I speculate that for the purpose of a scabbard, is probably better than a modern liquid sealer or oil.

Skal, I must compliment you on your commentary about steel quality and bending in period swords. There is actual at least one instance in one of the Eddas where a warrior's sword bends from use in combat. The warrior, of course, does the sensible thing, bracing the blade and straightening it with his foot so that he may continue fighting.

In regards to battlefield abuse: I remember quite distinctly from my perusal of Viking Sagas that, quite regularly, people would have to rebend their swords in combat. I remember quite specifically one Viking warrior who, in the midst of fighting one hundred or so enemies (He was a Viking, of course) he had to stop every now and then and stand on his sword to straighten it out.

Nice review. I posted one recently on the SBG Forum. I think it would probably handle a bit better if the grip were shorter/more historically accurate. I picked mine up in October from the SBG Sword Store for $214 with shipping. Also, Mathew Jensen posted a destructive testing of this sword that is pretty impressive. I also agree with you regarding the residue from the scabbard and the relatively worthlessness of the belt and suspension system. Overall, though, a great sword for the money, IMVHO.

The blade does seem a bit soft, but toughness isn't necessarily the same thing as deformation resistance, and certainly not the same thing as hardness. Historically speaking, a softer sword that bends under stress would have been preferable to a harder sword that snaps in half, since a bent sword can be straightened and used again whereas if your sword breaks, you basically need get a new one. (Assuming you survived the battle with a broken sword.) On the other hand, the advantage of a harder sword is that it can be made sharper. Making a sword always involves some degree of compromise between the two. Modern steels and heat treatments help a lot in that regard. (Seriously, many of the swords we make today would have been considered goddamned magical back in the viking age.) Anyway, keep in mind that when it comes to swords, you pretty much get what you pay for. If you can afford an Albion or Arms & Armor blade, then yeah, you're going to get a much better weapon, obviously. It's a question of whether or not this is a good sword for it's price range. This sword costs 250 dollars, which is basically around where you start finding swords that are "okay", but you should always expect there to be some issues and shortcuts taken.

I just bought this same sword off Kijiji for $190. The blade was pretty bent with a twist in it and dull and scuffed from use. And it did not fit snug in the sheath. I straightened the blade and polished and sharpened it. I also added material to the inside of the sheath at the top and shaved it down until the fit was snug. It took me a bit to use it without hurting my wrist on the pommel but I got it down now. The sheath is plastic. Thin plastic. I wrapped hockey tape around it several times to make it more functional. 1060 spring steel and peened. The 11cm grip is a little too long. All and all a very good sword for the price range.

Today and for a couple more days I'm an expert on Viking swords - at least fantasy Viking swords. In a few days I'll probably forget all about it. Last night I rented the 1954 adventure movie 'Prince Valiant'. In case you have forgotten Valiant is a Viking Prince and he wields ' The Singing Sword'. The movie Viking sword looks nothing at all like the sword our host is reviewing. The movie Viking sword is about four inches wide. It looks more like a shovel than a sword. It is highly polished and of course it sings. The movie score is by the late great Franz Waxman. When Valiant needs help in a sword fight, Waxman gets the orchestra churning. When the sword sings apparently your sword arm no longer tires. This is handy because the damn sword looks very heavy. Valiant serves King Arthur in the movie and he carries Excalibur - another magic sword. I had recently watched another Knight in Shining Armor movie from the same year - "Black Shield of Falworth". That movie alas had no magic swords. Tony Curtis had to duel the bad David Farrar with a regular plausible looking sword. Both were wearing full plate armor. He dispatched Farrar with a thrust into his arm pit - very plausible. But Valiant (Robert Wagner) thrusts his super wide sword into the evil James Mason right though his mail armor. Not very plausible unless your sword is magical. Otherwise Valiant is vastly superior to ' Black Shield'. Strangely the women are nearly the same. Janet Leigh is the blond main love interest in both pictures who is accompanied by a beautiful brunette - Barbara Rush in one and Debra Paget in the other. The plot situation is also nearly identical - except Valiant has some Vikings running around wearing huge cow horns on their helmets. I'm not sure if this is meant as comic relief. 'Black Shield' has the knights wearing what appears to be sheet aluminum full body armor - very fakey. In Valiant everyone wears mail - much more credible costume choice. In Valiant they seem to have gone to Europe to use real castles. In Black Shield the whole thing was shot on a back lot with a castle that appears to be made of poster board. And of course Valiant has the over wrought Waxman score thundering along all the time. Every time some one enters or exits there seems to be another fanfare. I loved both movies.

The gunk in the scabbard is lithium grease. The apply it to the blade to stave off rust.

hey skall that strange thing that comes out of the sheath is wax that is to prevent humidity, many swords have them so it is relatively normal

As far as i know the stuff left behind on the blade from the sheath is wax. it is used as a filler in low end scabbards to stop the blade from rattling.

To find the point of balance for any sword-like object, simply rest the sword upon both index fingers, and carefully slide your fingers towards each other. They will always meet underneath the center of mass. It might not save you a lot of time, but it's a neat trick nevertheless.

This sword actually sounds really cool. The biggest issue I've seen you mentioned with the cheaper weapons is the edge geometry and this one looks like it would be extremely easy to sharpen. As far as the scabbard goes, I wonder if you could use a vacuum attachment and try to suck out some of that powder that's coming off on the blade. Then I figure after a few good rounds of oiling the blade that will hopefully stop showing up.

0:14 that reminds me of that meme (which is dead now) where the description each time would get more and more complex but the picture it was describing would lower in quality more and more.

Hey Skall, it'd be really interesting to see your opinion on how various 'gardening' or 'farm' weapons would operate. Tools, even. Pitchforks and Machete's and what not, and what would be, if any, benefits to using these weapons in place of historical or accurate swords and what not.

Ronin is a good company - their inexpensive Katanas are usually pretty good for the $, and their laminated/forged stuff is really good. Their European swords for the $ are pretty decent too. Compared to Darksword stuff from here in Canada, for 1/2 the price it's pretty close IMO.
