This is a quick video about how I discovered Dungeons and Dragons, my original white box edition and the Whitebox rpg.

I love this book. Its cheap, the artwork is amazing and its dead simple to teach to kids. My daughter and her cousins love it. The differences in target numbers on those Turn Undead charts are because the 0ed book uses 2d6 and the White Box FMAG uses d20.

I wanted to point this out too. Thank you :)

I think RAW it’s 3d6 but d20 flows better

There are some minor differences between OD&D and Whitebox but it is pretty close. It also clears things up nicely.

I think we had the same cousin!😂👍 My older cousin got me into D&D back in 79/80, too. White Box really does nail the spirit of the old game.

This was a fun video. Thanks for sharing, I love hearing the first wave of players talking about the game as it existed. I'm actually using these exact rules for a recovery group I run. What's a more sober activity than kicking down doors and slaying monsters?

Thanks I’m glad you liked it. I have such fond memories of that time and I enjoy sharing them. Honestly playing D&D, drawing and reading comic books probably kept me out of a lot of trouble some of my peers got involved in!

Amen! I began gaming in 1986, but still love B/X. Only began to discover Original when S&W was released (2008) but this was and is so solid and playable for OD&D gaming! Great iteration of super old-school (original, even)! And the thief is present and highly usable, too! Solid work! Super fun. It’s been my personal go-to when I don’t use B/X or another system entirely, ever since its release in 2017 or so! I know this is an old vid but I wanted to give credit where it’s due. Thanks, man. Cheers! 🙂

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to play much lately due to no free time. But I will get back to the table soon.

I printed them from PDFs I have. I don’t think the PDFS are currently available.

I did not have that kind of cousin, but in the late 70s I was a bit to young for D&D (I was born in 75... ;) ) I have this little book too and it is awsome for its price. I prefer the original Whitebox (plus Greyhawk) though, even if it is much less intuitive. I made myself my own "White Box" last month by printing the PDFs from Drivethru and putting it into an A5 box I got from our local gaming store. I put the three booklets, Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry into it. I did the same for BX and a red box ;)

I get looking through the originals. I spent hours as a kid looking through the original books and I still look through them now. There’s a lot on nostalgia in those original books (and in the AD&D core books) for me.

@@ScottDSackett Nostalgia, yes :) I have the old 1e core rulebooks from the 80s and some POD replicas for regular use because those old tomes are getting torn - even though especially the 1e books were made for eternity as it seems... As far as I know they were made by a publisher of school books - so they withstand major punishment ;) I also have contemporary books of its german edition (I am from Germany...) and they are all falling apart - the glue is crumbling after over 30 years. 1e was quite short lived in Germany btw. I think, the PHB etc were released in 1986 and in 1990 we got 2e. Basic (Mentzer) saw its german release in 1984 and many modules of B and X series were published too. I did not purchase any books beyond Companion-Level because... Basic became to much of a cosim there and in Master. Immortal was never released as a german translation because TSR noticed the people who translated the rules had started making their own RPG : The Dark Eye, which is Germanies bestselling FRPG since the 80s. It is available in English too since its 4th edition. ;) give it a try - it is a great game, much different from D&D, but also in its 5th edition. It is Skillbased, with an active Parry and a very immersive campaign world, Aventuria. Many people feel nostalgia for this game in Germany like English speakers feel for D&D. The publisher released its first edition a few years ago, as the "Kaiser Retro Box" (which is a pun, Emperor Reto was the ruler of the Middenrealms 40/50 years ago. Today his granddaughter is Emperess), and they are re-releasing the whole series of modules from the 80s - among them the "Ork-Land Trilogy", Dark Eyes first epic, consisting of the three modules The Purple Tower, Spider Forest and The Orken Hoard. We loved this epic... Other multi-part adventures are the Phileason-Saga (it is what it says, in 80 Weeks around the World, but on a Viking ship ;) ), the Griffon Ford Campaign (again, Orks, many of them, invading the Middenrealms) and the campaign of the Seven Chosen and the Necromancer Borbarad, which is about the cataclysmic end of the recent Aeon and the beginning of a new one... Thinking of those modules gives me goosebumps ;) they are SO great :) Nostalgia...

PS: The Dark Eye wasn't the first german RPG though, the game Midgard is even 3 years older, published in 1981 and developed in the 70s with Empire of the Petal Throne as its inspiration... Midgard is still around too and in its 5th Edition, getting the 6th edition 2024...
