Review: ZSA Platform - the tenting kit for the Moonlander split ergonomic mechanical keyboard

I use a 3D-printed stand for my Moonlander: It folds in easily for transport, and lets me adjust the angle *without tools*, and this for me is the most important part, as I don't like to have to pull out a tool to configure it every time I move it somewhere or want to change the angle.

I’m using my Moonlander with the platform daily for about a month. It’s indeed very sturdy and gives strong support when resting your hands on each half. I would like to add that the leg based tenting solution feels like a joke compared to the platform and I would not use my moonlander without the platform.

The leg tenting just looks funny to me. It’s aesthetically unpleasant and I’ve heard it’s easy to strip the bolt. It would be nice if they offered to upgrade to this tenting solution for an additional cost of $60-70 and don’t send me the legs. I would buy that in a heartbeat. Looks rock solid and worth it for the comfort of typing.

This was really interesting, I've not seen much coverage of the Platform Kit outside of the email when they released it. While I'm currently daily driving an Ergodox EZ, I've been very tempted by a Moonlander of late, especially with the Platform Kit. It's a little hard to justify, but I might get one for myself as a birthday or christmas present to myself later this year. Thanks for the excellent video Ben! I also enjoyed the Ergodox EZ but think you deserve the Moonlander, Iain 🤣 I really appreciate the built in wrist rests, always frustrated me because the separate ones always shifted a little with the Ergodox. The Moonlander isn’t twice as good but I think there’s enough extra niceties to warrant it personally.

loving my Moonlander. Using Colemak dh. Have layers on right side for gaming, blender, zbush, substance painter, 3ds max. My 3d mouse fits nicely next to thumb cluster.

I failed to pay attention and thought the metal knurled knob only required thumb tightening. Oops! To stay in position with additional hand/finger pressure, the allen key is most definitely required. Buy a few spare keys. Nothing worse than finding... er... you can't find it. I like how the Moonlander with attached Platform still fits in the neoprene case. Your videos are fab, and the reason (along with Distrotube) I bought one.

What did you use for your cable between the two halves? I tried using a custom cable from mech cable but it didn't work. They even sent me a straight one (the original was a tight coil) and that didn't work either. Very upsetting - they both work when plugging into a headset :(

Hi Ben. Been following your Moonlander videos for some time now and am just about to give ZSA another sale. I notice that you've got yourself an extra set of F/J home keys. I'd like to do the same as I'm also considering transitioning to colemak DH. Where'd you source those? Doesn't look like I can get just THOSE keycaps from ZSA. Tnx! Cheers!

Depends which video you are looking at. With the default set, I just put the homing F/J onto the colemac t/n keys and put the non homing F/J onto there actual positions (so I don’t have the correct legends on the t/n but at least have homing bars. I have also from time to time has a Colemak set of DSA keycaps on there I got from Signature Plastics. The other option is order with blank keycaps, but I understand that isn’t for everyone.

Can you mount it on a armrest? I really want a zero gravity setup with a recliner and monitor mounted at a 90degree angle from the wall.

Have you modified your Moonlander? Foam inside the case? Lubricated switches? It sounds much better than mine which is stock.

I removed the stabiliser from the thumb keys (the big red ones) but I’m just using Gateron Oil King switches stock. They sound very good to me stock but I have also lubed them in my 360 and I do think that makes them sound even better 👍 Lot easier to change/lube switches on a Moonlander though!

I had some early signs of carpal tunnel and bought a Moonlander before it got any worse. I've been using it more or less daily for the last month or so, but I still can't get my head around the layout, especially for programming. I simply can't seem to find a way to easily navigate code while also being able to easily input characters like [,] or {, }. I'm really curious how you do it.

Best thing about these boards is they are fully programmable. Try doing the heatmap on the Oryx training whilst you code for a while and then try bringing your most used keys somewhere that you find easy to access (or another layer just for symbols you can easily switch to). Try it for a while and repeat until you get something that works for you.

I use dvorak with a variation called programmers dvorak whick make it easier, i add a custom behavior to make put in order the numbers and also put first the chars and with shift the numbers

It's just a bummer that it still doesn't support the wrist rest. It seems ZSA always misses one.

it's terrible at tenting, but it gives a nice weight so the keyboard doesnt move anymore
