@Shresth Jakhwal I haven't really had any issues. It's been pretty reliable. I've been through about two sets of toner cartridges so far. No issues to really report other than maybe when you scan things, you gotta make sure that the paper is pretty straight and tight in the feeder. I think that the software that comes with the computer, HP Smart, is pretty useful and well-thought-out. In addition the print to computer from your mobile device is great as well. I think it's really well done. You would be happy with it. Keep in mind that I run a very small office of about two people.

I wonder if it can output reasonable quality photos on glossy paper? Yes, thank you for this rare genuine and intelligent review.
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on your definition of reasonable. Yes, it can print color on glossy paper. If you're a photographer and want high-quality gallery prints, then I would say the quality isn't quite reasonable enough. Photos at home for personal mementos, probably fine. If you're printing a graphic for a school project or graphs on handouts for a work presentation then yes, I would say the quality is "reasonable." If you're printing advertising for a business, it's a toss-up depending if you're okay with a small-budget printing presentation style or are going for something more professional for higher-end customers.

Is setting custom paper sizes fairly easy? Trashing my canon and probably going to pick one of these up. We’re constantly printing different size labels for our business. Our house office jet works great but we need something more professional.
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can define customer paper sizes in the printer properties after the print dialog pops up when you click 'Print.' I know with labels sometimes there will be multiple labels on a sheet and most word processing software (like Microsoft Word) have the templates for different brands and label layouts built into the software. You'd need to select the brand and product number prior to filling out the template, then when you click print it should use the proper settings for that media type.

Hello, are you still satisfied with your hp479fdw? My old inkjet printer is now KO, so I have to buy a new one. For sure I will never ever buy an inkjet from Canon again. I will buy a laser printer and I’m thinking also to buy the hp479 or the brother Mfc 3750... Unfortunately I’m very unsure, which one should I buy... HP479fdw: the price is relatively stable, around 380 EUR, but there are a lot of complaints regarding the poor scan performance (the Brother is much better here) and that the scanned images are crooked... additionally the print quality is “only” 600x600dpi, which is not too much for such a price (the Brother has 2400x600dpi), and the biggest issue is, the original toner cartridges are approx 5x more expensive as the ones from Brother. It’s insane what HP is doing, what a crazy price they want for new cartridges. Brother MFC3750 cdw (or 3770cdw): has (at least on the technical description) higher scan and print quality, and a much cheaper (5 times cheaper) toner, but the price of this printer are currently on the maximum, are almost more so expensive as it was on the release date... no idea why the Brother printer are raising on price, the HP are dropping in price... very strange. So, it’s a big dilemma what to do... That’s why the question: what are the experiences with these printers. Thank you.

Thanks Phil for the excellent review of the printer. I have recently got one and am pleased with its functions. Would you be able to throw some light as to how we can print smaller documents such as a cheque or visiting cards etc.?
@ReviewedByPhil2 жыл бұрын
Yes, smaller media like cards or specific sized photo paper can be loaded into the front opening feed tray shown at 1:15 and adjusting its width as shown at 1:18. Then in your document application (like Microsoft Word) in the print dialogue you have to specify the tray, paper type, and paper size prior to printing.

Yes, there are two methods for configuring the Scan to Network Folder feature: (1) use the Scan to Network Folder Wizard (in Windows), which is installed in the HP program group for the printer as part of the full software installation, or (2) use the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). Thanks so much for the video. Super helpful. I have a question, is there a way to reduce the density of print. My printer prints on the dark side??
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Hm, are you talking about printing images that appear darker than what you see on your computer screen or more generally like black and white text? If your images are being printed out "darker" than what you see on your display, this usually indicates that the color/brightness/and contrast on the monitor aren't calibrated correctly. I don't know of any settings on the printer that would lighten prints, though you could try using "Eco mode" which uses less toner per print. Or you could try using photo editing software to lighten/brighten images before printing.

You're welcome! And thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it. With complex products like these, it's easy to go on and on about features and demonstrating each one and that can lead to very long videos, which is just not my style. So I try and pick a happy medium where I can distill the explanation down to the core features and hit on some important and interesting points that I think most folks might be looking for or interested to learn without missing the basic "just the facts" info as well. I know there's probably a whole lot more I could've talked about about and 9 minutes might seem too short for some (or too long for others) but the real-world time it takes to produce and edit these videos is measured in hours and days, and that's where I need to make my editorial decision to continue to spend more time on one video or wrap it up and cover other products.

@ReviewedByPhil5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you'll have to make sure to change the paper size setting on the printer or from the software you are printing from so it knows the size and adjust accordingly. In Windows, after hitting print, it usually shows up in the bottom right corner of the print menu under 'Zoom.' If you go into the printer properties, you can also change it there, the first drop down in the right column is usually 'Paper Sizes'.
@charlesingalz35615 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but laser printers require a 1/4" border to function properly, so a 4x6 photo printed on 4x6 media will not fully cover the sheet. If you need a photo where the image fully covers the sheet, you will have to print a 4x6 image onto a larger size media, then trim it down to size after printing. If you have a lot of photo needs, it might be easier to get an inkjet that supports borderless printing.

Thank you I really enjoyed how thorough the video was. Can you please tell me if I can print cardstock, photopaper and most importantly a windowed envelope? I need around 200 envelopes monthly with my logo on them and the Canon laser printer I purchased melted the window on the envelope. Thank you again.

Yes, you can print on cardstock and photopaper that is designed for laser printers. To my knowledge, there are specially spec'd window envelopes with a different type of plastic used designed to withstand the heat of a laser printer's toner bonding process, these for example: geni.us/Jdkkso [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] So look for media that is specifically marked for use with laser printers and not inkjet. Even so, HP doesn't *recommend* printing on envelopes with windows to avoid jams, but this doesn't mean it's not possible to do so. Just make sure to select the correct paper type from the dropdown in the print dialog. See here for paper loading instructions: support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m478-m479-series/19202514/model/19202521/document/c06389461

Can this printer print cardstock? Is the largest size 8 x 13?

I have a obituary/flyer/poster design/printing company. Do you think this printer would be a good addition?
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
This printer does work with a variety of media including glossy brochure paper, though I personally haven't tried it so don't have a good reference for the quality. In most cases, I think this printer would do well in a business setting, though if your primary business IS printing, I wouldn't know whether or not the print quality meets the requirements/standard for that. Conservatively, I'd say it'd probably do fine for proof drafts and samples, but isn't quite built for consistent high-volume daily printing.

@Falcon2 I got mines from Best Buy. As soon as it was in stock, I had to. Its been out of stock for so long. Glad I was able to get my hands on one. I'll need to look up the extra tray on eBay.

I enjoyed the video , but can you tell me if I can use this printer for my heat transfer , and if so , settings should I use.
@ReviewedByPhil5 жыл бұрын
While not specifically indicated in the user guide, this printer should work with heat transfer papers that specify that they are compatible with laser printers. If the heat transfer paper says inkjet only then no, then printer won't be able to work with that type.

Nicely explained. I have a query. Can the size of printing and level of contrast be modified by this printer?
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can change the scale/zoom of the print size and contrast in the settings of the print or copy menu when printing a document.

Thanks for well made review 👍🏼. Can you please check if the fan turns of soon after it stops printing?
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they run for a few seconds after printing but usually turn off after 3-5 seconds when printing is complete.

Do you know how to set the default properties to bw for this printer?
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Hm, you'll have to do this on the requestor device level, as there isn't a way to set B&W as a default on the printer itself. Only Enterprises level printers can change the global default for all users. If you have a Windows 10 PC, search for 'printers and scanners' and in the menu that pops up, click the M479FDW and select 'Manage.' Open the printer properties and select the 'Advanced' tab. Click on 'Printing defaults.' Go to the 'Color' tab and set to monochrome and black toner only so that it won't use the color cartridges.

Nice review. It just went on sale in my region and was thinking of getting one. Do you have any suggestions for a laser printer able to do Tabloid paper (A3)? Thanks
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Hm, this printer doesn't handle A3 as it's too large to fit in the trays. I believe the Xerox Versalink C8000 can do that: geni.us/dY8GT [Amazon Affiliate Product Link]

Hi Phil, Please guide whether this printer is suitable to be purchased in 2022 as it's around 03 years old model. I'm looking to buy a color laserjet printer for home office that should be future-proof for coming 05 years at least. Thanks !

Phil, great video/review. How is the fax feature? can you fax 2-sided document using the ADF?
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fax feature is quick and as easy to use as the copying/scanning. It can scan/fax a two-sided document in a single pass, but depending on the settings of the receiving fax machine, they may either get a 2-sided page or two single pages.

How do I fox the black streaks when printing ???

Hi, excellent review. I normally use a B&W laser printer as the cartridge never dries out. If I buy a colour printer will the ink dry out over the course of a year?
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
No, laser toner is a powder, not a liquid so whether black or color, the toner cannot "dry out" as it is already dry to begin with.
