Hey there! I'm Di. Today I'm a lucky lady as I unbox, use and review products from ‪@Nerdforge‬ , ‪@ChloeRoseArt‬ and ‪@BayleeJae‬. Plus, a brand-new set of watercolors from Monte Marte. I'm bummed to say that something I use today just isn't as it should be and goes a bit wrong. Watch to find out which item really didn't make it past quality control and my honest review at the end.
Other KZbinrs mentioned in my video:
‪@SuperRaedizzle‬ and her awesome bubble drawing tutorial
‪@MiraByler‬ and her review of some of the same products

Being on disability/fixed income I have had plenty dodgy brushes because I haven’t got much money to spend on hobbies. The Royal Langnckel ones are among the worst. Lift the brush and the head doesn’t come with it sometimes it’s that bad. They also loose a lot of bristles when washing

I have a friend who, every time she gets a new sketchbook like that beautiful NerdForge one, immediately opens it to the first page, grabs the nearest writing implement she can find, and just scrawls aimlessly like a hyperactive toddler. Why? Because now it's not perfect, and she can do whatever she wants in its pages. I don't buy nice sketchbooks, but... if I did? I'd probably take that tip, because I'm like you and VERY prone to "it's so beautiful I'll ruin it!" thinking. 😊

@@lindatannock sketchbooks are so difficult. Unlike loose paper, you just can't get rid of a page of it is awful. I find them really stressful, especially when they are expensive. I'm getting better about gessoing over bad pages now so I can use them.

The purple watercolors are granulating which is why the separation. This is actually a desired effect in the watercolor community. It does NOT mean that the watercolors are cheap. To the contrary, the most expensive and best watercolors actually have sets based on granulation. From what I have seen in this video, you are definitely an artist. Don't sell yourself short. Also, the ferrule of a paintbrush will often separate from the handle if it is left soaking in water too long. The water loosens the bond of the glue which holds the ferrule to the brush. That said, I have never hand Royal and Langnickel do that. They are usually fairly reliable. Maybe you got a bad bunch? Or maybe they were student grade?
@aussiecrafter
@aussiecrafter Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. ☺️ I had no idea about the granulating! I thought something was wrong with them 🤣🤣 so good to know. The brushes were a brand new set when they pulled apart so maybe your right, got a bad batch. I can actually see on the metal part the crimping looks like it wasn't done properly.
@khills
@khills Жыл бұрын
@@aussiecrafter Yeah, it looks like it might have been their student line, and I've found that for most of the nice brush companies, their student lines can just be a little dodgy. Which makes sense - they're going for volume more than quality. I will say, treat yourself to a professional line brush from them in whatever your favorite brush is; you won't be disappointed.
@sallygreenfield6991
@sallygreenfield6991 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you are necessarily wrong, but what she was experiencing with those watercolors is not graduation in the way that NICE granulating paints work. I recognize that palette anywhere...those are JerryQ watercolors, and they are, indeed, not great quality for the price (even if the price isn't that high). If you are looking for a nice, inexpensive set of watercolors, let me know! I might be able to make a few suggestions.
@muskndusk

@@sallygreenfield6991 I'd always recommend the Winsor & Newton Cotman pocket set. It's inexpense, has only 12 colours which are warm and cool primaries plus a few earths. It helps in learning about colour mixing. If you can pay a bit more and have some experience get their 24 pan set which saves so much mixing.
@hansendesigns
@hansendesigns Жыл бұрын
…and the Cotmans are the same pigment as the wn artist grade, just with fillers. Also they make the Cotman sets lightfast which is really nice. Cotmans are a good set, however fully pigmented paints do last a long time and can be worth the money. :)

I relate to the blank sketchbook far too much 😂 I have a stack of brilliant quality books sat gathering dust just itching to be used. I have a bad habit of giving myself art block as I’m a perfectionist and I’m terrified of creating ‘bad’ art so I just don’t create anything. This video inspired me to just hop in and not worry about ‘ruining’ my new books and I thank you for that. My other tip is to have two sketchbooks on the go. I have one that I use for quick sketches and planning (nicknamed the shame book) and one for ‘final pieces’ where I use what I’ve learnt from the quick sketches and planning to create a more refined piece.

Hullo, I believe that you might enjoy watercolor painting more if you pick up some 100% cotton paper! I simply cannot express how important paper is in watercolor painting. Your paint is granulating and this is a feature that many use for texture in their paintings, it is neither good nor bad. I tell people to “upgrade” watercolor supplies in this order : paper, brushes, paint! You can create a wonderful artwork if you start with a very good surface , if you don’t use professional grade watercolor paint it might not last but you can always take a picture and have it printed, like what many people do with work in their sketchbooks. Lovely video thanks for posting your review!

So that does look like nice paper, but if you want more quality out of your paints, you need to have more suitable paper to your medium, at least before believing that the things that you felt went wrong were your fault. I got Canson XL awhile back and after having used better stuff, and loving the pieces I ended up with before hand, I thought those initial works were a fluke and that I didn't actually have any skill at all in painting with watercolour. When I realized it was the paper, and found an old supply of Arches paper, I gained my confidence back 10 fold! So my lesson there was "don't place value on your work, when the very substrate your work is on has no value." That doesn't quite work here as that paper looks amazing, but it's not specified as Watercolour paper, and that really, really does make a difference!

Love your Mushroom character. Super cute! The pink in the purple will be the pigments separating. The amount of water you use can affect this as can the paper but it is mostly how they create the purple colour in this case with a combination of multiple pigments. It may happen less on 100% cotton watercolour paper. Having not tried the paint I can’t be sure but that would be my guess based on my intermediate knowledge of watercolour. So lovely to see another Aussie art KZbinr! I found you through Sarah Renae Clark.

You might think about getting the best cotton watercolor paper you can afford. Paper is the most important element in watercolor painting. Even Crayola watercolors behave better on 100% cotton. Emily Artful gave this advice in a few of her videos. It made the MOST difference in my own learning experience. This paper isn't great for watercolor, because the paper soaks it up right away. This can cause patchiness in your painting. Gouache (true gouache or acrylic gouache) may be a better medium for sketchbook/multimedia paper painting.

Jazzas kits, no way I can justify that when I already have more or similar crafty stuff in my extensive curated collection/hoard 😉. I thought your artworks were cute!

The handles can do that in humid climates, I have bought Royal and Langnickel brushes while living in humid Florida, and my desert climate of Colorado, it only happened to my brushes in Florida. The humidity deteriorates the glue very quickly.

I recently found a YTber who says pretty often "stop making your artsupplies sad by not using them" an she is so right. It's only a waste if you by stuff and refuses to use it because you don't want to ruin or wasting it. Your wizard shroom is super cute. I love him💖 Maby the purple is a granulating color? I've used the royal langnickel brushes for a decade and I can say, I've never had that issue. BUT when washing the brushes, never use super hot water and never run the water in the barrels where they attach to wood (not saying you did this, you may have received a bad batch). Running super hot water can loosen the glue and cause the barrel and brush to detach in any brush.

Are you leaving the brushes sitting in water? Even good brushes will have their glue eventually come off and cause that disconnecting of the bristles and ferrule from the barrel of the brush thing if you do. (8th grade me had some brushes and didn't do the best brush care and ruined an expensive brush that way). Now I use both good and cheaper brushes and as long as I take care of them they're not that different from each other.

So, if you want a wash of color, you might want to try wet on wet watercolor. But... This paper MIGHT not hold up. Also, backgrounds usually should be done first. So, outline your drawing and do the wash first, then do the main painting. I can see your painting much in the style of acrylic, water color takes practice! I'd recommend getting a non water pen watercolor brush. Perhaps a #6.

Yeah, I definitely think it's the paper. I don't think it's absorbent enough for watercolor. I came across this problem in my 1st couple of sketchbooks. I've heard from every established watercolor artist that paper is absolutely the most important place to spend your money if you're on a budget. My $80 CoR watercolors look rather dull on my budget paper. I prefer sketchbooks & haven't had the opportunity to get a better quality sketchbook for them. I only purchase art supplies on sale, so I'm waiting until I can afford some cotton watercolor paper to see their full potential.

Hey! Your wizard shroom is super cute!! The purple turned pink because of something called granulation: your purple is most likely made from a combination of a pink and blue pigment... this blue pigment certainly being ultramarine blue, which to put it simply is a very heavy pigment that tends to settle at the bottom of the paper while the pink sits on top, creating this separation :) it's a very cool effect that is sought after by many artists, so it's actually a sign of quality with your paints!!

It’s great to hear these are all good. I’ve admired the brushes and sketchbook, but the shipping costs ended up too much. Royal and Langnickel is a really cheap brand tbh. I’ve got some really cheap brushes by Daler Rowney, a set of ten synthetics, that have lasted well for a decade, though another set were awful, it was strange. I love your characters and the pastel acrylic. I love when watercolours separate like that, though not if you did want an even colour. Purples I mix with granulating blues often do that for me.

Even hobbyists could benefit (esp watercolor) from saving up the few extra dollars to get a good six primary color set like , for example the daniel smith 6 primary beginner set. You get excellent performance, good practice with optimum materials, and very good lightfastness. Watercolor tubes can last a long time and you can pour your own half pans. For those who don’t know why you need 6 primaries, your palette benefits from having a warm and cool of each of the primaries to get optimal secondaries and the widest mixing range.

Some watercolors granulate/separate and that's the characteristic of the pigment. If they were 50 dollars that could be the case (you sometimes get that in higher end paints, in fact some super expensive paints are purposely MARKETED as granulating/separating. If you'd like to know which ones do that do a swatch sheet of the whole set. Some might be more opaque naturally (cobalt, cadmiums etc are like that...same with ochres), some might be granulating (ultramarine etc).
