One good thing to add with this bucket is a water filter set that you can operate with a hand pump... that way you can have clean water to actually cook the food with, since some people may not have space to actually store water long term. So, being able to filter water from most sources would be convenient. Other things, which are a bit more obvious is keeping a portable propane stove, and several cans of propane around.

You can make it for a week with no electricity, especially if when they started giving the hurricane watches, you popped a some seeds in the sprouter and some in a microgreen planter for some freshness. Cilantro, basil and parsley microgreens have the flavor but you can have sprouts in 3 - 4 days, microgreens in 10ish. These are all freeze dried. The little packets are most likely silica which can absorb some moisture if it gets into the packages. Water will greatly diminish the shelf life of dried products so the packet is there to prevent that. One thing to remember is you'll need some drinkable water to make all these dishes and a heat source. So plan accordingly. These go great to compliment canned goods which do not necessarily need to be cooked as they're heat treated in the canning process.

There's always at least a week's worth of good food in our basement, maybe 2 with just the stuff we buy in bulk to save on cost (not for survivalist reasons). For protein we keep Spam for things like Spam Musubi, but it of course is a survivalist food. Our freezer is stocked as well, and I guess in a snowstorm even if we lost power it wouldn't be that hard to keep frozen food frozen. Funnily enough during our last big storm that made headlines, the corner grocer on my block stayed open since the family who runs it live upstairs, so we only ever ran out of fresh produce (they obviously couldn't get any deliveries in).

Over time you want a minimum or 2000-2500 kcal/day, so that's 10-12 daily servings, equating to 12-15 person-days of food in one of these boxes. Far from feeding a family of 4 for a week.

This bucket is (was?) on sale at Costco for $65 and it’s a great value. However, it’s important to recognize these buckets are not fully self contained. There is no meat products and very little other protein in these meals. A better option, though a little more expensive, is the Mountain House kits on Amazon. Either one is better than not having any emergency food storage, but the Ready Wise kits from Costco are minimally sufficient. By the way, the powdered milk really isn’t intended to be consumed from a glass, unless that’s your thing. It’s a way of adding protein to other dishes and adding a creamy texture….or cereal. Edited for a typo.

@@laurieg2436 Emergencies can feel like the end of the world. It was just an expression. Because if it was the end of the world we wouldn’t need to eat now would we, LOL 😂🤣😜

Make powdered milk with boiled water. Mixes better and will taste better.

I believe in preparedness. Walmart stocked this brand of emergency food supplies for a while. They had 72 hour food supply boxes for, I think, almost $40 a piece. They only stocked the boxes for a few months. I guess they didn't sell well because put them on clearance. For $9 each. I bought...a few.

$40 for 72 hours of food sounds terrible, I spend like $20 on 3-5 days of food. (But I'm talking about for me vs for a family so maybe it is better)

I love your recipes and ideas. I just recently made the Crumbl cookies on my channel. Thanks for the idea Nicole. ❤❤❤

I just got one a few days ago for $63.99 (Southwest MO). (The day before the election, lol.) I'm glad it's all at least relatively tasty, if not delicious. Loved the 2nd opinion!

Thanks for reviewing Costco emergency bucket .

Living in Houston where we could have outages for weeks at a time (after hurricanes) I would buy it for sure

They also sell Mountain House at times! You should unbox that big Costco collection.

Can someone do a 1 year emergency food bucket challenge where they only eat this for a year? That would actually save a massive amount of money on food.
@supernova743Ай бұрын
That woudlnt' be a good idea. As you saw in the video there was no meat and almost no fruit or vegetables. This is good for a week or two to help you get through an emergency, not as meal replacement. There are a lot of malnutrition related diseases that can manifest in a few months. Go look up what happens to vegans that don't consume enough proteins, they basically become nonfunctional in as little as 6 months.

So many! I think it's practical. Plus easy to keep track since everything is probably dated the same.

Nicole, this is the first of your videos that I've seen, but if we ever meet, don't be surprised if I propose!! LOL ~Frank PS...I'm ordering some of this food just because of your video. I think we probably have similar tastes.

I used to buy 4 buckets everytime I went to Costco and I haven’t seen them there in awhile and I look every time I’m there

I like that you did that. And you figure most of them were winners so that's pretty good.

So then here's a good one, do a ten favorite meals and freeze dry everything, then wait 6 months and then try two helpings a day and then give us a view on your own cooking freeze dried food. I hear scrambled eggs taste the same too.

Considering how many hurricanes/rainstorms and forest fires happen in the USA every year - this is actually a very smart thing to have at home.
