The more I watch Troughton, the more I realize just how awesome he was. Let's face it, he makes The Three Doctors. He steals every scene he's in, just proving how vital he was in the success of the show.

Troughton's Doctor appealed to me because, of all the Doctors, he is the most kind and avuncular. His gentle, child-like and approachable character was an anchor around which I felt safe watching the monsters. I think my family watched DW from the first episode, but my age means that my earliest memory of watching the show live is a Troughton story (The Invasion), before becoming a regular viewer starting with Pertwee in 1970. I then later returned to discover Troughton again as an adult, probably largely due to the showing of The Krotons as a repeat on TV, and the release of The Seeds of Death on edited VHS tape (the first DW story on home video, I think) which I thought was great. Even though a few of his stories were a little lacklustre, Troughton's performance was always spot on. That said, the vast majority of his stories are superb and very rewatchable. I also adored the 1960s Cybermen. To me they were far more scary than the Daleks. Although it must be said that the two Troughton Dalek stories are superb. David Whitaker really knew how to write the Daleks as devious, sinister creatures. :-)

My favourite little moment in Tomb is the villain and Jamie. "I spared his life!" "You mean you missed him."

A quick thing to mention about The Enemy of the World is that Troughton actually plays "three" characters, in effect: the Doctor, Salamander, and the Doctor pretending to be Salamander, the third of which took subtlety by Troughton to make it clear to the viewer exactly which he was, without making the other characters in the scene look foolish that they couldn't tell this wasn't Salamander. :-)

I love Patrick Troughton's Doctor and Jamie is easily my favorite classic companion. Its hard to imagine the 2nd Doctor without him. That's the main reason I wish I could see The Highlanders. And thanks to the animations, I have almost every 2nd Doctor story minus a few.

Patrick Troughton is one of my favourite Doctors and it’s tragic that so many episodes are missing. My favourite stories would be The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Faceless Ones, Evil of the Daleks, Invasion, The Web of Fear, The Abominable Snowmen, Seeds of Death and The War Games.

I absolutely love how hesitant you are to criticise an episode! I totally agree with your opinions actually. I feel like some who fans really dislike most episodes! There are some dull episodes of course, and a few bad ones and some wierd ideas that don't work, but surely the whole point of being a fan of something is that you mostly love it! Haha

So true. I swear some "fans" re-watch and obsess over the shows they love so much to the point where they develop this weird toxic relationship with the show. Gatekeeping it and hating the very thing they once "loved" ...

You're lucky, in the 80s (before VHS, DVD, streaming or recovery of lost episodes) the only way I could appreciate the Troughton era was through Target novelisations (when I could find them!). A lot of his character is lost when you don't see him on screen.

Despite my watching The Abominable Snowmen as telesnaps, it still stands out to me as such a distinct and brilliant serial. Sometimes I lose my attention when watching Classic Who(often due to pacing), but I was glued to the screen

I loved your review of the Troughton era. I'm going through my first watch through of Classic Who and I can't express how much I fell in love with the Second Doctor. He almost instantly became my favorite Doctor ever. When I started, I thought all of the recons would turn me off and make it harder to enjoy, but that wasn't the case at all. It does hurt my heart that so many of the serials are missing or incomplete from his run. I do hope that more turn up at some point. Thank you for the review and I can't wait to watch the rest as i go through my Who journey!

Troughton was the first Doctor i ever saw, back in the early 2000s before the revival. i found his(at the time) "complete" run on VHS alongside a few Hartnell tapes at a library sale. Asked my parents to buy them for me, and ended up watching Tomb Of The Cybermen first. i was a fan from then on, and while i greatly enjoyed Hartnell too, i watched those precious few Troughton tapes over and over after school. He was a childhood hero to me and defined my love of the show from then on. He will always be my favorite, MY Doctor and i will always pine for more of his episodes to come back. I agree with you on wanting to see the Highlanders return especially, i think its some of his finest work.
@ShamrockParticle Жыл бұрын
Truly impressive presentation, thank you! Season 4 is one of THE best. Experimental in many ways and often successful. Troughton's manic additions were more lively than his stoic later self. Even then, he never skips a beat. Moonbase looks great, but dialogue choices were as bad as cybermen using sand bags to wall up an atmospheric hole for the base. Faceless Ones is a hidden gem. Episodes 1 and 3 have a great feel. The animation does justice for the remaining parts. David Whitaker can't be beat for Dalek stories. He edited the script for the very first one and it shows.

I was listening to your opinions on the some of the issues with Tomb and just wanted to offer my two cents. I think fiction is at it's best when it's not compared to real life. Whenever I watch Doctor Who and certainly classic episodes I try to forget about our world and it's issues and treat certain topics as a completely separate realm. Toberman wasn't treat differently because of his skin colour he was treated the way he was because he was unlike anyone else in the story. I'm glad now we live in an age where racism and sexism can be addressed and there's diversity in casting but it's important to remember times have changed and Today may as well be another world compared to the 1960s and in that time they probably thought the same about the pre war eras of the world. It took great tragedies for people to start treating people better. That's truth about the world we'll always remember. For example the wild west was only a hundred years ago. It's difficult to grasp but people will always react negatively to things we don't understand. Not everyone but some and that's the great learning curve of life. So when I watch old Who and you meet these horrible beings like Daleks or Cybermen or the state of society in the vengeance of varros and all the horrid characters we meet in between. I just think it's a universal issue that happens everywhere and it's not a reflection of our real world issues just a similar kind of stryfe. The doctor brings positive changes wherever he goes and I know from talking to many other fans he's influenced many of us to be kind and diverse and care and help other living creatures in our real lives as well as the people he met in the show. I'm sorry if none of that made sense. It's a tough subject really but I guess my point is that there's good and bad everywhere and it's up to you which you want to put out into the world. I've known pain and trauma in my life and I'm glad I had good role models like The Doctor to help me cope with that because it's made me the good man I am today. If you can help or be a force good for our world you have the moral obligation to do so. You'll find if you put good out it will always come back. The same works for the opposite side of the coin

I just watched the Underwater Menace, I was sad because I loved Hartnell but with this story I am starting to love Troughton too. I am lucky because I started to watch the Classics after they did an animation of this story (only 4 months ago) so I didn't need to watch reconstructions. It instantly became one of my favorite classic story, after The Dalek Invasion Of Earth and The Rescue. The only flaw which is the only reason it's not first : Polly is useless. But except that I love everything in this story. Edit : Now I watched seasons 4 and 5. Evil of the Daleks is second, and Web Of Fear is third (the fight scene between the soldiers and the yeti on the streets is PERFECT), Invasion Of Earth is still the best, the rescue is fourth and Underwater Menace is fifth.

Part of the reason so many villains are shown as incompetent, such as the Dominators, is due to more analysis of the Second World War. The years of amping up the Nazis to make victory seem more hard fought, was replaced with the realization that they were actually very incompetent. Many of their leaders were egocentric perverts and madmen, and the rest were just thugs. Some of this retrospection was brought on by a lot of pro-communist thinking among academics and the educated in the UK. The Soviets were seen as being somewhat intellectual, while the Americans were seeming more and more like the Nazis (this was the civil rights era). This attitude bled through into a lot of tv programming, to counter the macho shoot-first attitude of US tv. It was also somewhat down to declining British power, since if you can’t be one of the big boys then maybe the big boys seem somewhat ridiculous and misguided. In short, trying to “Dominate” rather than aim for peace and equality is something only very stupid and corrupt people could want.
@turbodolf Жыл бұрын
Barely comprehensible babbling. If the "Nazis" were incompetent, they wouldn't have been able to take on the entire world for 6 years, as well as bring France to its knees, with the British army making a hasty escape at the Battle of Dunkirk.
