Notable statistic: the Canes are the first team in 25 seasons to win 6 straight 1st-round playoff matchups. The last team to do so was the 1995-2000 Red Wings. Carolina, despite a lot of people's skepticism due to those two ECF sweeps, are generally a model for consistency in the postseason.

Islanders fan here. There's a good chunk of the fan base that would love to see this team/core blown up and start fresh, but this series proves to anyone who actually watched it that this team still has some fight left in it. the older vets and players (Martin, Clutterbuck, Bortuzzo) will be sent to pasture and cap space can be freed up by moving on from certain players who aren't developing. the prospect situation is obviously pretty poor, so they'll have to look to the trade or free agent market to fill the gaps. Would not be surprised if we chose to move on from other players whose deals are expiring next year like palmieri, but those calling for pageau or lee to be moved out are delusional. Lee had a shaky start to this season but he was our best player this series and the line with him, pageau and engvall kept us in this series. Mike Reilly should absolutely be brought back and can pair well with scott mayfield when he returns from injury next year and will fill out our defensive core rather well. and i'm sure Sorokin will return to form next year; Varlamov had a great end to the year but he took a team friendly deal to stay on long island and understands that his role is to backup/mentor Ilya. having Roy as a coach certainly doesnt hurt in that regard, and i do think he is the guy to carry us forward

I'm a Hurricanes fan, agree with you. Islanders need to keep their core but switch up a few pieces and they'll be great. They play a similar style to the Hurricanes, just not as well. They're where they need to be, they're making the playoffs, they need to assess what's missing and add it

I'd say the isles play a style of hockey that carolina is not so good against. Thay said, the scoring has been there at the moment and they still found rhe chances with a bunch of pressure. The rangers managed to keep the smallest of margins ahead of carolina in the regular season. I think people were slightly underrating the Islanders before this series. Yes they were OTL merchants during the regular season and had less wins than some teams that didn't make the playoffs, but they are a hard working team that gave some of the top teams in the league trouble over the course of the season. I disagree based on the stats. I think the Isles matchup horribly against the Canes. I created a logistic regression model that predicts series winners with 80% accuracy, and mine gave the Hurricanes a 96% chance to win this series. All 22 variables that I used in the model the Hurricanes had a better statistic. The Isles basically play a similar style to the Canes, but are worse in just about every way. Not an insult to the Isles, but rather a compliment to the Canes for how good of a team they are.
@Koolasso5 ай бұрын
@@poejavelski148 Personally I doubt that your model actually has 80% accuracy in predicting series wins. If you did you should be making billions winning every bet and predicting every bracket. What variables are you using in your subset selection? What data? Is it randomized? Does it follow a normal distribution? Is there an equal variance? What other assumptions can you make with your model? Logistic regression, so you’re using categorical variables to predict the outcomes of hockey series wins and they all have a high as fuck correlation coefficient? You’re talking to a data scientist bro. And as a data scientist I can deff say you cannot predict everything in sports. Every single game if you actually watched them were very close. They are not far away from beating them EDIT: Also, 22 variables sounds like overfitting. You need to do cross validation to make sure that isn’t the case, otherwise you’re getting misleading r-squared values, coefficients etc. which sounds like that’s the case.
@poejavelski1485 ай бұрын
@@Koolasso Brother, 80% is not good enough to be making billions 😂 I don’t think you understand how betting spreads work. Either way, my model was pretty damn accurate for this series.
