This video was just an excuse to play a bunch of Spectacular Spider-Man clips, wasn't it? I highly approve. Also, good demonstration of practical villainy telling people to watch Spectacular Spider-Man. You're definitely going to break some hearts when they reach the point where the show got unceremoniously canceled.
@alexanderharvey64072 ай бұрын
This may be a terribly outdated opinion but if you want to inflict some slow burn villainy and get some body horror, gore, and terrorism I think along the way...convince someone to watch the original Full Metal Alchemist. From the early 2000's. I think it's about episode 23 that your friend may call you in tears.

Flee Mortals is indeed a great book. The combo of it and The Monster Overhaul by Skerples is really great for discovering how you as a GM can use classic fantasy monsters (and some weird, atypical ones) in cool and unique ways at the table! And this video was a blast, I DID appreciate the clips! Love Spiderman's rogue gallery, and the Sinister Six (+) are also great villain team inspiration.

something I plan on doing if I ever wind up running dnd is set up the Black Iron Pact or Amethyst Knife and implement the campaign structure of City of Mist. Figure out three veins that the villains manipulate the city from, give each vein three layers, and allow the party to figure out just how deep it all goes.

These sound super cool and fun. That is the one downside of playing a non-standard game; I can't steal these mechanics one-to-one and coming up with mechanics is the part that I struggle with eth most. Like you said, I recognize cool mechanics when I see them but I'm not as confident about sitting down and making them happen. Also, you may have just taught me a veil I have I didn't know I had; because the idea of the masked one being a close friend who was actually a bigot the entire time filled me will so much dread and not in a fun way. Mostly because I don't know how you would even get catharsis out of that one; you beat them all up for being big bigots but I would still walk away more sad than satisfied. I think I could handle an acquaintance I thought I liked but if its an actual friend I don't think I could enjoy it.

Its funny how this video comes out 1 day before I run my Rime of the Frostmaiden session where the players will finally face the Stygian Enmity in Yhtryn, my homebrew villain party that seeks the ancient magic of that lost city in order to release Levistus from his prison. As always, another great video Mike!

One of my favorite things to do with villains (singular or in groups) is to have them work at cross purposes. And I don't just mean the stand sudden yet inevitable betrayal. I mean like introducing the human supremacist group, then introducing the eco-terrorist group, and having them run afoul of each other near the PCs. Since the goals of the villain groups are not compatible, they would naturally hate each other (maybe more than they hate the PCs). It can add a lot of depth to villains as far as your players are concerned.

I don't usually comment, though I do enjoy your content! However, I'm not sure I like this kind of video. Just explaining what is already written in someone else's product feels a little off. I guess it is cool to spotlight the villains in Flee, Mortals!, and judging from the comments it seems to be the first exposure some people had to Flee, Mortals!, but don't think this video really added much to what is already written. If you plan to do more of these kinds of spotlights, I think I would prefer deeper dives on narrower sections, with more tips or thoughts on how to integrate it into your own game (or, if the intent is more of a review, how easy it would be to run it "out of the box") Hopefully this does not come off as too antagonistic, I like your content and obviously you are creating a particularly intense amount of it right now, but I felt the need to mention this.

One thing that kind of bothers me about villain teamups sometimes, especially if they're cartoonishly evil, is that I don't understand *why* they're teamed up. It often feels really handwavy and that can be valid too of course but I'm curious how it's handled with these villain parties.
@Cassapphic2 ай бұрын
I've only thoroughly read through the grave order as I'm using tbem currently, but fkr the grave order, halorin was lestheris' bodyguard in life before he died helping her escape after her thirst for knowledge got her in trouble and she revived him as an undead. The horror is somethinf they made themselves so of course it's loyal, and the other two were not strkng enough alone, almost being executed by their hometown and saved by the grave order who saw their abilities would help them, lestheris is always eager fkr new allies, wether they are alive or undead is a matter of compliance.
@JoULove2 ай бұрын
@Cassapphic that does sound good! Thanks for sharing

All the parties have very clear, common goals. I think the spider man clips may actually give the wrong impression: These are not rogues gallery team ups, but the most capable people in a larger organization enacting that group's broader goals. The two exceptions: The Abominations are really just a strange, evil family that stay together because of a mix of fondness and Ceemal & Klar handling strategy and tactics, and the Soulbinders work together because they are allies going back generations and are the only people like themselves, so are in a "scratch your back, you scratch mine" arrangement. After all, having an immortal insurance policy to make sure your own immortality failsafe kicks in is useful! The rest all lead cults, armies, or enterprises.
