Reviewing The Flower Kings Discography

Once again you knocked them down Scot!! Seriously!!! I agree with you the best album is "The Sum of no Evil" although I don't quite know all the discography, perhaps about half only. There so many good bands, I was so grabbed and hooked (I still am) to seventies and sixties rock (prog, hard, blues, folk, mainstream) that I didn't know many modern bands except the obvious (for me) Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Mostly Autumn, The Mars Volta, Spock's Beard, and some other stuff like Blackberry Smoke, Rival Sons, Drive-By Truckers, Greta Van Fleet, Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) and Muse , Tool or Artic Monkeys. Man what you made me know with bands like: Wobbler, Big Big Train, Agusa, Rio Okumoto, Kaipa, Pattern-Seeking Animals, and I have to say to you I'm so grateful to you to make me see the light of good modern music!!! Thank you very much!! See you Scot!!

Great video! Not as familiar with The Flower Kings as I would like to be, but this gives me a nice idea of where to start on their catalog. Oh, and I went and subscribed to Niamh the Prog Nerd as a bit of support. Seems like a cool channel.

Saw them in Uppsala a couple of weeks ago doing release shows for the new one, just attended the first. Was great!! They finished with the grand Stardust We Are and the evening was just perfect. Got a red vinyl version of that album. PS. Really like Niamh's videos and was glad to find a young female being into prog.

Hey Scot there's 4 or 5 of their albums I haven't heard including your top ranking Sum of no evil. Need to address that pronto 🙏 I have a special love of Paradox Hotel , Stardust we are is a modern-ish classic , and DESOLATION ROSE..... just EPIC man !! Cheers Scot , what a great discography this band has , and it has to be said their album artwork is up there with some of best artists in the prog genre. 😍

They have some awesome artwork (and a couple duds - Stardust We Are is pretty terrible!!!) But their last ten or so have been great. Roger Dean. Ed Unitsky. Silas Toball. Kevin Sloan. High quality!!!!

Ok, big fan of TFK, even from old Kaipa days I already knew Roine's playing and boy has he released a lot of great work over the years. I kind of felt a punch to the gut when Tomas Bodin left the band but I was able to recover. The real uppercut though came from Jonas Reingold's departure, one of my favorite bass players of all time, the man is an absolute beast! After his departure it just was not the same for me anymore, as I would miss his incredible bass lines; btw his band Karmakanic is very good. On a more serious note, Im voicing my support to The Prog Nerd, what is wrong with people? Sadly, social media and anonymity bring out the worst in people. Scot, thank you for this TFK video, we are very much in agreement in most of your rankings. Best wishes, peace in the Middle East and youtube as well.

Yo brother I know this is off-topic but I saw yes Wednesday night in Clearwater Florida October 11, 2023. Obviously a great show. They put together a 20 minute medley of topographic oceans. That was really interesting . They also played a bunch of songs. I’ve never heard them play live before. I’m seeing Yes in different formats at least a dozen times … greatest band on the planet my brother. if you get an opportunity to see Yes, on this tour I highly recommend it … as if I even need to tell you. I agree on most of your ratings. In the seventies, when I started buying records around -73, prog was actually very popular by the critics, and I listened to Yes and ELP and Genesis and Jethro Tull. It was a great time starting to explore music. But the bands in Sweden were not that great. But there were two bands that I thought could compete, and that was Trettioåriga Kriget (Thirty years war) and Kaipa. Kaipa had a talented young guitar player in Roine Stolt. I saw both bands live and they were great. Roine left Kaipa 1978 and made a solo album that I admire more then I like, and then he disappeared. It was much later I found out that he had formed a band called the Flower Kings, around 2001. That was a good day in my life. There are many great bands from Sweden that are totally unknown in Sweden, but touring around the world, TFK, Therion, Opeth, Moon Safari and others. It’s a shame.

Just got Retropolis yesterday. I think it's very strong. I guess I don’t mind the references to classic prog. Love how they revisited the ping pong sound from the beginning 10 years later with Paradox Hotel.

Mostly on board with your ratings. I now a lot of folks aren't super keen on Paradox Hotel but I love it, and Sum is my fav TFK album too. Have a soft spot for Retropolis as it was my intro to the band. Here here to your comment re Naimh as well. I was at the Flower Kings show in Montreal last year ( Canada) Amazing . The previous night I seen Pineapple Thief in Ottawa. It was fine but they had no Amps or monitors on stage. The Flower Kings came out with full Amps and sound. 100% better show. That goes to show that even the great Gavin Harrison can not save small a weak stage sound. Stop computer generated concerts.

It's funny how fans of the same band can have such different opinions of the band. Space Revolver was the last disc I really love by TFK. You said Unfold the Future took a jazzy/fusion turn, and that put me off. I don't even have their last 4 discs. I listened to By Royal Decree, and I really liked the music, but I could do without the female vocals. I listened to Waiting For Miracles, Islands, and Look At You Now, but they just didn't do anything for me. I hate it because I really love earlier Flower King's. The Sum of No Evil is your only "10", that is interesting! For me Space Revolver is a "10" ranked masterpiece. I also give Flower Power and Stardust We Are 10's. Back in the World of Adventures and Retropolis I would give 8's, and then there is the rest. Sorry I'm such a disappointment on this one, but I have been disappointed with The Flower King's for some time. Maybe I should give their disc's that I don't really care for another listen. You know how a lot of prog is, you have to grind it into your brain with many listens, and sometimes it just clicks.
