Thank you, sir, for reviewing my poem first. I am the writer of Regrets, my love. And by "it," I meant forgiveness, I feared the forgiveness may never come. And thank you for your honest feedback. I am a new writer, please do forgive my mistakes. I will improve, thanks to your advice.

It was a beautiful piece Agnal. If you're unfamiliar with him, I think you might perhaps enjoy the works of Joseph Brodsky.

This was super useful - seeing an expert analyze poetry by non-expert poets (at least for the most part) is new and particularly useful in ways to your (at least for the most part) non-expert poet audience. Additionally, the chance these writers get to receive that expert advice may be the only time they ever receive such an expert analysis of and commentary on their work. I love this series already.

This is AMAZING! Thank you so much for such objective and respectful reviews and to all those who sent in their work! Hats off to you for giving suggestions to make already good poems even better! For someone who’s not an English major or quite far from the humanities, these are such valuable (and inspirational) suggestions to look into, even for those not feeling brave enough to send in (hmm… wonder who 😅). Your editing is superb, without losing most of the sentiments or imagery conveyed (writers may have a hard time filtering with the urge to hold on to or showcase all aspects to the minute detail at times). These are talented poets and you’ve curated to highlight specific aspects in each and I could see some poems already doing what you’d mentioned in the previous! The last one was so heavy with such palpable tension and your suggestion made it even tighter and polished! I think these are more valuable than going over already published poems from famous poets-that would’ve undergone many such revisions already-to show what they did right! Btw, I have a question on capitalization… what is the general “rule” on that? I’ve seen some that capitalize only at the beginning of a sentence, as in after a period (even outside of these) and some that don’t. 🎉❤
@WritingwithAndrew5 ай бұрын
Thanks--these were great poems that gave me good stuff to talk about. I'm glad it was helpful to you! As for capitalization, the historical convention was to capitalize the first word of each line, but the contemporary standard is generally only to capitalize where words would be capitalized normally (or, of course, not at all for some poets)

Excellent breakdown! I appreciate this format on your channel, it's refreshing to see someone who understands language. On another note, I am I the only person who is not a big fan of poetry that doesn't rhyme? It seems like rhyming is nearly gone from contemporary poetry, not sure why. I enjoy non-rhyming poetry of course, but it feels more like reading personal thoughts jotted down. Anyway, I hope to see more of these review videos in the future!

I like the work of Kay Ryan--she has expressed distaste for rhyme at the ends of lines, but it doesn't stop her work from being dense with rhyming in other places. It may be worth checking out if your ear is craving some rhyme 🙂

Thanks so much for this video. The feedback given on these poems helps with my own. Two of my biggest takeaways: write using language that people actually use, and don’t get too caught up with the ‘rules’ if they hold back the poem’s quality. Some very good advice here.

Another incredible video as usual, Andrew! Thanks for giving us some real examples of poetry revision. I find these videos with explanations AND examples super helpful! I posted a poem in your discord that I was contemplating submitting to your website. Only, I thought I might submit all my drafts (I only had 3) to specifically get feedback on my revision process rather than feedback on the poem itself, although thats never unwanted. 😆 I'm not sure if that would be of interest to you or not though. I could also do it with a new poem rather than one I already posted on discord. I'll go through my writing journal and see what I might have to work with.
@WritingwithAndrew5 ай бұрын
Thanks! That could be interesting--if you do, just submit them all in one document so it's easier to know what order they should be in 😅
@AsuraSantosha5 ай бұрын
@WritingwithAndrew Yeah, that was the plan. I'm glad you think it could be interesting, though it might not be as helpful or usable if my submission is the only example you have. But I'll send something in anyway, and if you can use it, great, and if you don't have a use for it, that's OK too.

Good deal--and if you want to coerce others on Discord to do the same in the name of increasing the sample size, why not? 😜

the moth one hits good, i hope this doesn’t count as ridicule but a lot of contemporary poems i have a hard time enjoying because of how pedestrian they sound. i don’t mind antiquated diction if the subject reaches for something higher
@WritingwithAndrew5 ай бұрын
Not ridicule at all (to talk about modern poetry in general). I don't know where the bottleneck is, but I think most people just aren't aware of what good contemporary poetry looks like. We see a lot of old stuff in school and a lot of modern social media poetry (for lack of a better term), but we don't get as much exposure to the good stuff that's been written in the last fifty or so years 🤷♂️
