I actually work at a 24/7 walmart so we are open all day, but the black Friday starts at 6 lol. The one thing Rich didn't argue about is that not everyone has family or doesn't care to celebrate holidays and would prefer to work holidays for more pay. I was a GameStop ASM in 2015 and SM in 2016. I thought it was awesome that J. Paul Raines allowed the whole company to take the day off on Thanksgiving, may he rest in peace. Under new leadership, GameStop is tanking... hard. They probably see it as a missed opportunity to gain that early Black Friday traffic if they remain closed on Thanksgiving, and in that way they're right. It's just a shame that this has become such a trend in American culture over the past 10 to 15 years. Honestly, I think it's only a limited time until companies are open on Christmas Day as well.

Oof, if you think Millenials are bad don't interact with Gen Z tbf most Millenials grew up with family values and had holidays off and in fact would like to keep it that way. After all Millenials are children of the 80's and 90's. The black friday thing sprung up more from Millenial's parents forcing places to stay open so they could get the latest electronic thing or toy for them, so you can't really truly blame Millenials for that, as this trend started IIRC mid or late 90's.

The real problem is not the stores, but US the people. Stores are only doing this because WE THE PEOPLE are buying stuff from them. I refuse to buy anything from places on Thanksgiving. However, people are still rushing to buy stuff - so its not the stores fault - WE ARE THE PROBLEM. You'd be surprised how many people want to work on their days off. I'm not one of them, but at my day job I'd say about half of the work force jumps at the chance to work on holidays to make the extra money. I personally have hobbies I do in my free time (like gaming) and make enough to support myself based on a 40 hour work week, but there are so many people whom that isn't the case for. It was either last year or 2 years ago when we were doing inventory over Thanksgiving and we needed managers to make sure people were actually doing inventory; the hourly "do the bean counting inventory" positions were in such high demand we hand to make decisions by seniority, it was the salary "make sure people are doing the counting" that were pulling teeth.

Meanwhile for me, I am a slant okay with it, for I work at a retirement home up in Oregon. I treat the elderly people the same way they would treat me, like family. So working a job like this, Thanksgiving (I'm a chef btw) doesnt feel too much different than with my real family because I still get to sit down with the residents and enjoy a meal with them while they boost my ego unintentionally (since I helped make the food lol). My time is 10AM-6PM with a lot of others, so it's manageable time still to have a late dinner at home. I consider something like this an okay to work holidays since I have a 2nd family with the residents here. Cheers and thanks for reading.

Until I read the comments on this video, I had never even heard of anyone getting paid extra for working nights or sundays. I had never dreamed that I could have ever gotten paid extra for working nights or sundays. Here, you have to get paid at least time and a half if you work over 40 hours in a week. If you have a good job, you will get certain holidays off and possibly get paid for them, too. If you have a job like GamesStop, then you just have to work holidays for no extra pay and deal with rude people.

I used to work in retail in Minnesota. My family lived in FL. Most of my friends traveled for Thanksgiving. I couldn't afford to. I spent most Thanksgivings whole I was up there alone. Sure, I got to play video games and other stuff, but I really didn't have anything going on. Then one year, Target, my employer said they were going to be open Thanksgiving evening. A certain number of people would be required to work to run the store, but they asked for people to sign up for those shifts, then only required people to work if not enough people signed up. They fed us. They said use double time and a half. I jumped at the opportunity. And every year after that that I was in that situation I asked to work. So it's not crazy to me that some GameStop employees might have requested to be able to work on Thanksgiving. And most GameStops don't require anymore than 2-3 people be there to run the store. Yes, some people have to work who don't want to and I think sucks and FOR THAT REASON I do think most places should stay closed. But, Rich, it's possible and even likely that GameStop really did get requests from employees to he able to work on Thanksgiving Day. I still agree that they shouldn't. But you're wrong if you think this isn't something that employees asked for.

You know to be honest there are some families that can use the extra money for the holidays. So time and a half ( which MOST big company chains give there employees on holidays) can mean if there child is getting that gift the have been waiting for or not. Now I agree no one should be FORCED to work if they really don't want to but unfortunately they aren't gonna schedule EVERYONE at once and if ur scheduled to work it's YOUR responsibility to find someone who can take ur shift. If not you can and will be held accountable for skipping out.. so I don't think it should be completely taken away. Just refined to suit more people's needs ( and thats an almost impossible feat to achieve).

Might just be the way I see it but I think GameStop is pulling moves like this because they might fear they will soon be in the same boat as Blockbuster was a few years ago and having great deals or opening early is a way to attract the crazy/early shoppers who either stay home on thanksgiving or aren’t celebrating or doing anything on that day itself. Due to all the flack they get for their poor business practices and trade in policies etc. as well as less people purchasing physical copies of games, I think this is one of their desperate moves to stay as relevant as possible for as long as possible.

Some examples are hotels, the military, diplomatic services, intelligence services, police departments, fire departments, EMTs, power plants, electrical distribution stations, high voltage lineman, television broadcasting, hospitals and emergency rooms. Basically if you work retail that holidays are ruined somewhere somehow. Even if you get Thanksgiving or Christmas off still need to get up stupid early to work the next day like Black Friday or Canada has Boxing Day the day after Christmas. Overhyped sales that aren't any better than during a mediocre time of year. It's only a deal if it's something you need and want and many "deals" don't fall in that people need and want category. Also add in exhaustion from working before the holidays. Been there when I used to work retail or even security in a retail environment before or after the holidays. Get Christmas off but the weight of working the next day and getting up stupid early for it ruins it. My rant and plan to do a personal vlog on December exhaustion on my channel.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate here, and I know I’ll be getting a lot of flak for this, but I’ll throw it out anyway. There are actually store associates out there who want more hours and specifically do ask to work on Thanksgiving. Some people don’t have families to spend the day with and wouldn’t really be doing anything anyway otherwise. Also, Thanksgiving won’t typically be a busy day in-store, so it’s a pretty easy way to earn some extra cash if you want to do it. Is this GameStop’s situation? I have no idea, but it’s not impossible.

There are people out there that would rather work, yes. But let's not exclude the family-oriented people who would rather sit down to a nice meal. Having the whip cracked down on you and told you're coming in whether you like it or not is the problem.

Hey man, when I like any of your vids, I get the notification that it's been added to my liked vids, but the blue thumbs up goes back to grey as soon as I scroll down even a little. After this happens, I click the grey like thumb again, and again, it goes blue, and gives me another alert saying the same thing, and yet again, when I scroll down, the like is undone every time, and is even removed from my liked videos folder. Just thought I would let you know that I tried to like all 25 or so of your vids that I watched today, but because of this weird issue, none of them were actually recorded. Even if I don't scroll down, once I leave your channel menu to check if it's been added to my liked videos, it goes back to grey again, and once again, it isn't added to my liked folder. I just want to 'like' your videos mate! Should I contact KZbin? Or would it be better coming from you. I hope you actually get to my message! I know how busy you are mate. Kind regards, N.K McConchie

I can tell you for sure when the memo came out in 2017 when I was working there, we were all pissed. We received the same memo that was released that you read. No one wanted to work that day. I did go in and work on Thanksgiving because my kids were going on elsewhere and I wanted to be helpful to the others that wanted to spend time with their families. It was my manager, myself and one other employee. We stayed until after midnight setting up Black Friday sales for Friday. My manager lived an hour away. She went home, slept 2 hours and got up and came back. I opened with her that day too since my kids weren't home and I was trying to be nice to the people I worked with. So I got there at 8:00 am. It was a miserable day. I did bring lunch for my manager and myself from Thanksgiving because she didn't have time to have a Thanksgiving meal. So there was that. But it was unending both days with customers.

Some of the people I know in the Gamestops I go to actually want to go work on holidays. Holiday pay and that they would have been at home doing nothing is one reason. Some other friends don't want to work that day granted, but well that's why you get someone to cover for you. Regarding retail, of course retail stores don't care about their employees since you are easily replaced and from personal experience working at the Target I was at, on the days I didn't get someone to sign up for a red card I am told "if you don't get a red card we might have to terminate you". For those that don't know a red card is a debit or credit card for Target.

WOW this isn't nearly as big a deal as he's making it out to be. Thumbs down. My family could almost never get together on a holiday because of conflicting work schedules so you know what we did? We didn't celebrate on the day. I can't even remember the last time we celebrated Christmas on Christmas morning...it was typically the evening before or upwards to a week before depending on work schedules. If you can't arrange a time for all of the family then you simply arrange things on multiple days. Maybe your 'Christmas' is instead a trip in January or February to see the family you couldn't visit in December. You make these things work because family is important and its not about the day or the religious importance as it is about spending time with your family. I don't blame Gamestop or similar companies for doing what they can to stay afloat. If this time with family is important enough to you both parties can make arrangements to figure something out. That's how I grew up and it never felt like some major loss.
