Exactly. While some movies are for kids- others are for adults. And that's the same for games. But if something makes you happy- why stop? There doesn't need to be an age stamp on everything. If you're 45, and male, and you enjoy playing sponge bob games- go for it.!

Gaming is my escape from the pain. HOWEVER! I started gaming in the mid 70s and have stayed with it as it evolved and I feel hip and relevant with not only the piss poor games, but the most amazing AAA titles. Would I still play if I didn't have health issues? HELL YEAH! Do I have the time to make most people jealous?HELL YEAH? Take it from someone like me. I couldn't give one single shit about what anyone thinks, or says. I love gaming, I grew up on it, I still do it, and I will continue to do it. I'm 28 right now, do I see at any point anywhere in the next 10, 20 or 30 years even that I'll stop? No. The day I quit gaming is the day my body gives up, due to a problem with my hands or I just flat out die. And you know what? I'm going to keep calling myself a gamer, because that's what I am. You can say what you want, but anyone who has that passion, that love for video games, is a gamer. Whether its casual, whether it's die-hard, we are what we are. I've said it once, I'll say it however many times I need to. You can leave a complaint in the complaint box, BUT I DON'T CHECK THAT SHIT.

Damn right ! IT'S ENTERTAINMENT, just because it might not be someone else's idea of entertainment (mostly because they are simply ignorant on the subject) it is just as legit as movies, sports, fucking stamp collecting, if you enjoy it and it is not hurting anyone else then FUCK what anyone else thinks, if they have a problem with that it is not your problem it's THEIRS ! If you give up something you enjoy to please someone else you WILL regret it and resent the person you gave it up for.

If you can't handle that i do this shit? you aren't my friend and this has been my rule all my life. I learned not to give a social fuck. And i have friends who don't game...we go play pool and talk about movies. I have friends who play games and we still go play pool and talk about games. Nothing wrong with games.
@styxwickorfrost8117 жыл бұрын
This is why I don't see anything wrong with gaming. If anything, it is a more interactive way to consume media. Not kidding when I say this, and it actually surprises me, but my friend's grandfather who's in his 80's is found of playing DotA2 and has been playing the Warcraft DotA mod since 5.84. Sure, he may have ended up being the most toxic old man I've met, but at best it's just insults he's spewing in reference to the game to other people, but other than that, there's nothing wrong. If anyone wants to bring up how gaming "influences" children, then they should keep in mind how much the TV shows have influenced them as well. Point is, like what you said, nothing wrong with games.

I'm only 16, but I've been gaming since the age of 4. I grew up with gaming and nothing, not even work will stop me in my spare time. Has it made me an anti-social shut-in? No. I'm with my girlfriend of a year and four months, got plenty of friends and we hang out all the time. Has it made me a loser? Fuck no! Would a loser study hard to get the best grades he can get? Would a loser have the ambition to pursue a career in science and be willing to follow every step needed to achieve his goals? If anything, some games even helped to spark my fascination with science. Sure I play games and sure I spend a lot of my spare time doing so, but maybe that's for the better, because there are definitely worse things to do.

Video games are MUCH better than just watching TV and movies... (I'm not saying its bad i watch some TV occasionally) because watching a movie or a TV show doesn't require you to think, and you sit there literally brain-dead staring at the screen. Well, with video games you actually think of things such as strategy. Also studies have shown that games like Cod and battlefield make your reflex reaction time better, and improves your hand-eye coordination.

I'm 31, my mom is 56, and we have been playing games since the late 80's. It was bonding activity when I was a kid, we both have always loved J-RPGs and Zelda games. We both still play, although I am more into the retro stuff. Neither of us fit that "fat virgin basement dweller" stereotype and I am proud to break it often. Growing up playing J-RPGs made me a better reader and expanded my vocabulary, not to mention my imagination. I will never stop playing games even if I can't find anything new that I like. As a new parents to our baby boy, my husband and I have been continuously told by others to drop gaming and focus on raising our kid. Obviously, both of our time spent on gaming has been cut down quite a bit these past few weeks, and I've accepted that things will never be the same (though having a son who I hope to be very proud of is very much worth the sacrifices). I do hope, however, that we can still keep games as much as we can in our lives. Games have been central to our development, and we have no intention to drop them. It's weird, though. Both of our parents are comfortable with our lifestyles (since they know we're responsible enough), it's the extended relatives who resort to subtle condescension in telling us to stop gaming. Guess they're projecting their problems with their own kids onto us. We're quite the successful young couple, I can see why we piss other people off.

Video games are the ultimate escape from the illusion we call reality. I find it really angering that people like me get criticized for playing games.. When we have adult men and even men in their 50s obsessing over some men in tights tackling each other. See the hypocrisy here? I'm 21 and am getting a pay raise soon at an already substantial job. I don't feel it's right to say what I make. But I will say it's not minimum wage slavery and it's not a louzy $11/hr. "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." -George Bernard Shaw At 26 years old I have had people tell me to grow up or ask when I was going to grow out of gaming. But quite honestly? Games have become as much an intrinsic part of our culture as television. It seems ironic too that these game machines that are hooked up to the TV are not thought of as entertainment devices like the TV is. Reading that article it was interesting to read how he responded to people questioning his hobby. How is wasting/spending time playing a video game any different from watching TV for 3-5 hours after work? Games are not unlike TV, movies, and books. They can take us to different worlds, tell us stories, and yes they can even teach us. They can even provide an outlet for people. Watching a documentary called the Smash Bros. A professional Smash player called Mango said if he hadn't gotten into playing Smash; he could have ended up very different. They also can provide a social outlet for people. In the Looking for Group WoW documentary; a player revealed that her mother couldn't go outside due to medical issues and that the game allowed her to talk to people and a way to 'go outside' when she was phsyically unable to do so. And I think Brian Altano of IGN made a good point on the NVC podcast. "Playing the worst game ever is more mature than making fun of or bashing someone for their hobbies." On the bright side; I wear a Legend of Zelda ballcap sometimes and have had both men and women compliment me on the hat. I also have the Mario overworld theme as a ring tone and people at work recognize the tune. I think that is one of the coolest things about gaming. You can have a simple 8 bit chip tune or wear some form of video game iconography and it resonates with someone. I won't stop gaming...not until they pry the controller from my cold dead hands.

Well im 24 but i completely understand where yoyr coming from. I feel that gaming as a whole has evolved " matured" with our generation over the years. Its a serious hobby of mine. My wife thinks that its childish but i just tell her that this is a serious hobby of mine. Ive been playing games since atari so i feel ive been in the " click" since the beginning. Just because everyone frowns upon us for our hobby hasnt and wont make me stop. With a full time job, wife, and two kids i still manage once they go to sleep at night to play my games because it is my "cool-down time". So long story short, i dont plan on quiting just because everyone else thinks its imature. Games have grown with me and it being my #1 hobby i have decided that i will stop when the time is right but by then ill prob be 70+ years old... hahaha so i got a long way to go

I find some adults to be rather hypocritical. They tell us "aren't you too old for this", and yet they play what, Diamond Digger or Candy Crush Saga? I don't understand that. I not only see people play console and PC games, but I also see people play social games too. I've seen people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s playing the games I mentioned. But I'm not calling anyone out here though, I'm just saying that you shouldn't be ashamed of it. In fact, I find that some people have improved their relationship by playing video games. And for that, I believe it's okay because it's also bringing us together.

This is what scares me about Anime and Manga (Japanese Comics, and Comic adaptations) I am 16 but fear that when I am an adult I will be shunned by others. Dude, there is a huge following of Anime and Manga. I'm in a anime club at my college, we are also hosting a small one day con there. I would say go to a con, you'll see their are many people that still love anime above the age of a teenager. Although the high school based anime will start to feel a bit weird as you get older. I actually think Anime does a lot of thing better then western tv and movies.
@linkno19 жыл бұрын
I still watch anime as an adult. If anybody questions you about it, just ask them what exactly they watch. 9/10 it's something simple and stupid designed to keep idiots engaged for 30-60 minutes, like X-factor or some shit. Hell, even sports are pretty lame. Watching people do the exact same thing every week? You're essentially watching reruns.

Y'know, I've considered quitting gaming before not because of peer pressure (though one could argue that this is part of it), but because of the people that try to turn gaming into this huge competition to show off how their preferred company, platform, etc. is the "master race". Y'know, the people that are like "PC Master Race" or "Nintendo sucks ass, Sony is best company". These people just make me scratch my head and wonder why we can't all just shut the hell up and let us all enjoy gaming how we wish. But then I realized that petulant fanboys shouldn't stop me from enjoying gaming how I want. This is really your best video in a long time Rich as it showed me that we shouldn't let what naysayers stop us from doing what we love. So thank you.

I have a job, have bills, responsibilities. How I live my life is for a scenario that may never happen which is, if my adult self met my child self and my child self asked me “I always dreamed to be an adult to do what I wanted, yes be responsible and in the end of the day play games I love. Do you still do that?!” I’ll proudly say “Yes, I do what I want and be responsible and in the end of the day play games I love”.

I'm 46 and I have gamed since I first laid my hands on an electromechanical arcade game (Sega Missile) back around 1972. I find myself fairly sickened by the business models and practices being employed by manufacturers/publishers these days, which mean you don't really own or control the games you pay for these days. So I may not continue to buy the main systems if they continue down this path... but I will still game. I own many of the systems that have been released, from as far back as home Pong consoles and the Commodore PET, through to the PS3 (around 130 systems)... and I use them, and will continue to use them for as long as they work. I continue to buy (or if I'm lucky... be given) new systems, if they aren't crippled by restrictions... like Android gaming portables, as they offer a relatively open gaming experience, like that provided by the Amiga, back in the day. You know what? It's still fun. It was fun back when it was a new thing, and it is fun now. Why on earth would I stop? When there are so many bad things that a person could do with their time, and that it appears on the news that many actually *do* do with their time, often for want of something better to do.... the idea of criticising people for gaming seems rather stupid to me.
@LateGameReviewer019 жыл бұрын
so true on so many levels. I really don't get the idea of gamers being 2nd hand thing like where inferior. I despise it and I personally know people who judges me because of that. Like Rich said about people who come from home: they go back to their home from work and watch TV for 3-4 hours. I personally asked that person who judged me and confronted him and told him what did he do when he's not working. After 1-2 minutes, he was stuttering when he spoke at some point. Avoiding eye contact and all, he was pathetic. He could judge me because I was a gamer but if you go home watch TV for 3-4 hours, dont you dare judge that lol

Really great video Rich. Reminds me of a quote from CS Lewis, *"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."* Being 21 and in college, this quote has really hit home with me. For a while in my teen years, I stopped playing things like Pokemon and Trading Card Games. I stopped watching cartoons, heck i didn't even get into anime until my junior year of high school. I figured that I had grown out of them and saw myself as too mature to enjoy them. Now, as a 21 year-old college student, I play Magic and Pokemon and I love to watch anime. Do I care what people think, no not really. A part of me has some fear of it, but part that's of growing up. That need to grown up only shows the insecurity of a child. The loss of that insecurity is the sign that you have officially "grown up".

A hobby is something to pass your time and clean up your mind at tough times or after long days so yeah... its not really wasting time. Playing a story driven game is like watching a film or series but you control the way things are done. Sure, there is a story that you follow but the battles and the way you get to places is your way. A hobby is not a waste of time because you do it for relaxing, cleaning up your mind and just having fun after a long or frustrating day

shit ima be 50 and still gaming like a mf, there ain't no damn age limit for gaming, why do you think they make games that are intended for adults. Anyone that says adults can't be gamers, needs to get a life and quit hating on people because they actually have a way to have fun.

It's funny how people sometimes say everyone who plays video games are losers. I am a High School student with a 4.0 GPA and I am enrolled in multiple sports and still play video games with my friends. Go ahead, call me a loser.

I think I'm the only teenager who has the dad who tells me to stop playing games and wasting my time.. When he sits there and watch heat games 24/7 and still watches tv when there isn't And I'm just trying to chill and play some dragon age inquisition after I'm done with my homework. I'm 17. Even on the weekends, this guy does this. Everytime I turn that bloody ps4 on, he's ready to get holy water and splash me praying for me not to be a "nerd" Lol. Because I play games when I have nothing to do, and not watch tv or be dumb asf like other teenagers who go out and do dumb shit.

I turned 26 literally 2 hours ago (happy birthday to me! :D) and I don't see myself giving up playing games any time soon. Sure I have less time to play nowadays due to other obligations, but I think it will be a lifelong hobby. I graduated university 4 years ago with a degree in games development, after all. I'm still yet to find work in the industry, but it's still the job I'm working towards. I don't think there is an age where it becomes unacceptable to play games. My girlfriend and I, both 26, play games together all the time, well, when we can find the time. We initially met over the shared hobby and bond a ton while playing together. I think if you enjoy games, don't be ashamed of it, and don't ever let anyone tell you you should be ashamed of it. You enjoy what you enjoy. And hell, I enjoy it right along with you, me and the whole gaming community, of all ages :)

As I get older I simply just change my taste in games and become more picky, but by doing so I weed out the ones that dont offer much enjoyment so its a plus for me.

I admit in school video games were something that only boys played and even then, I was considered more nerdy because I loved games for story, deph and making me feel for the characters where as more other kids were more interested in running around in GTA and blowing everything up! I believe, like movies and comics, Gaming has become more advanced and the message has become stronger. Years ago, movies were seen as nothing but escapism and now some can be art, same with comics. when I mean School I mean Secondary school, which is basically high School in the UK.

I didn't say that they DIDN'T have story. What I meant was the kids focus was that you could run around and blow shit up and they cared nothing for the story.

I just discovered this video, and I must say, Well said Rich. Up until a couple months ago, a guy from work used to bug me about gaming all the time... Not that I cared much; but after a while it got annoying (I'm 39, and he's 10 years my senior). He is a huge football fan, like team flags fluttering from both back windows on his car, full on man cave complete with framed jerseys, flags, posters, team beer fridge, etc. Not to mention season pass tickets, and yes he's one of those dudes who goes to games shirtless, and painted. I decided to tell him that he was an even bigger nerd than me, because at least my hobby stays at home, I don't chase it all over the country painted and shirtless. Since then he's never bugged me again about playing games in my spare time. We are all nerds for something, be it gaming, sports, books, vinyl records, even hunters live and breathe their hobby. We should all just learn to mind our business, and keep our judgements to ourselves. There's enough real bullshit, and issues out there that we should really work on fixing.

I may decide to write a blog entry about this on my new blog, because a flaw in people's logic I find with this is that, television can often be a completely mindless pastime. There are plenty of films and tv shows that DO mentally stimulate you, especially if they are highly dramatic, like "Breaking Bad." And you just can't stop watching, you have to see what happens next. But other shows and films, especially comedic ones, you can often just put on in the background while you're doing other things, and you get the gist of the show and what's going on. It doesn't require as much mental attention as other things do. People often make the excuse that if you find a movie completely stupid, but a lot of people don't, you just have to "shut your brain off" and it will suddenly become awesome. But when you play video games, it's totally different. Because you are actively engaging yourself in your entertainment. Your brain is switched into its on position, and you are actually doing something with your hands to reach a particular goal and to explore another universe with it's own characters, locations, and rules. And often this all requires quick thinking and strategic planning in order to accomplish each goal within the game. So it makes no sense why the stigma would still be here, if it should be painfully obvious that playing games does more for you than sitting on your ass in a completely motionless state for hours on end. Yes, both things can seemingly "waste your time" as much as each other. But I ask you, though, which would you rather be doing?

The problem is that gaming isolates you from other people in your home. So in most cases this is a problem for adults as they have families around them that require their affection and attention. Gaming can be very consuming, leading people to choose gaming over relationships. In this way it can be as bad as other addictions.
