Revision ACL Surgery

Dr. Marx: As youth athletics continue to become more and more popular, with more kids participating and more kids participating year-round, we're seeing a lot more ACL tears. And, you know, we have good surgeries for that to get people back up and on the field back to their sports, most of them do very well. But what we're seeing more and more too is that 5-10 years down the line, some of those patients are starting to retear their old ACLs. And so then you're starting to talk about, we call it revision ACL surgery or redoing the first one, and there's a lot of things to consider with that. One is what graft are you going to use? Two is what's the bone quality like? Are the tunnels well-heeled; can you use the same ones? You have to make some different incisions; you have to take old hardware out. And one thing that fellowship training and sports medicine allows you the time to do is see a lot of those patients, do a lot of those surgeries. In the same way that folks who maybe didn't have a sports medicine fellowship training, they're not quite as familiar and so we have to pay attention to the details in those kinds of surgeries to make sure that the second time around we get it right so you're not looking at a third maybe a fourth surgery.
