Got me confused, when my first assignment was on a DE in the Great Lakes, my berth was across from magazine for 5” gun mount, noisy for sleeping from night shift on the bridge when they had live ammunition and shoot drills, I think, cut me slack, forward most mount, but I don’t remember where, only that I could move from my rack to the bridge without going outside, forgive my memory I was a SA boats then learning the ropes and one of the few that wasn’t seasick so I stood watch on the bridge, quite the view I remember 🦑

Thanks for sharing your memories. Out of the many DE classes I believe there were only two or three classes that had 5" guns...so, that narrows it down a little bit. Most had 3" mounts. I think the Knox, Brooke, Garcia definitely had 5" guns, but I can't remember off the top about the other nine classes of DE's if they were 3" or 5". One better be immune to seasickness on a ship of that size...a lot of movement no doubt!

Interesting that they removed and plated over the hoist holes, but left the spent shell hatches?

I did find that interesting too...but, the guns were still active so the powder canisters (like I show in the video) had to go somewhere...the actual brass casing went onto the main deck, while the canisters came down below. Thanks for watching!
