His record in college, after the ACL was 32-5. After the ACL at Clemson he had 11,000 passing yards, 90 touchdowns. And a National championship. You see that often in drafts in many sports. People draft on potential over production. Decision makers and scouts assume that people who haven't played as much but show "flashes of brilliance" will continue to improve. They also assume a lot that some people are closer to a ceiling and may not transfer well to the next level of competition. Sometimes you look like a genius, and sometimes an idiot. We all know which way this one is leaning so far :/

Also the pedigree of having a professional baseball player for a father, so he grew up around athletes and knew how to work and prepare himself. Ive looked at scouting reports from 2017, and the majority had the order of QB’s at: 1. Trubisky 2. Watson 3. Mahomes Nobody expected Mahomes to turn into what he is today. Who he actually was compared to a lot in these reports was jay cutler, a gunslinger who made too many mistakes but when he was hot he was HOT. Bears weren’t gonna take that risk. Watson going number one at QB was an argument many people did make, and was compelling. However, majority said trubisky was better and had a higher floor than Watson.

I remember this draft, the Jets were the likely landing spot for Watson if Browns/Bears didnt take him. Browns leaking Trubisky was a ploy for someone to take him and then Jets get Watson so they could get Mahomes. They didn't expect someone to trade up for Mahomes. I'm sure they tried to trade up and get him but how the board fell nobody really moved out of their slots. Had the Jets taken Watson over Adams a safety (lol) we might be having an entire different conversation. KC didnt even give up much to the Bills (who also needed a qb at the time, with Watson on the Board too) Some of the GMs are just really really bad. Example, Lions in a complete rebuild tear down had pick 3 and their choice of Tua or Herbert with an aging Stafford and said lets get the corner and see if that helps. If you dont have a qb, you'll never contend in the NFL.

In the 1983 draft KC passed on Jim Kelly and Dan Marino and pick Todd Blackledge, QB from Penn State, with the 7th overall pick. Patrick Mahomes is the first QB they've drafted in the first round since then.

Yeah I'm skeptical on "most teams" had it ranked with Trubisky as the #1 QB. We keep hearing this. Again none of us are denying some teams (obviously including the Bears) had it ranked this way. But did Schefter talk to 32 teams? 20? 15? What is most teams?

It is Trubisky's fault that he was drafted before Mahomes and Watson. The whole pre-draft process is about pumping up your draft stock and Team Trubisky was successful in making the Bears (and other teams) fall in love with him. And I'm sure that he loved getting paid like the No. 2 pick in the draft.

Watson was GREAT with CLEMSON, against BAMA, I did not even know of Mitch Trubisky until channels like YOURSELVES started shoving him down my throat. I don't mind people who had Mayfield over Jackson because Mayfield was a stud for 3 years with the Sooners but Mitch over DW4 was and still is a head scratcher.

It doesn't matter that the Bears missed out on Mahomes or Watson because you need good talent in other positions such as receivers and an offensive line. One player alone cannot win games consistently. If either QB was at the helm in Chicago in 2020 I doubt that their record would be much better than it currently stands. That is not even taking into account coaching and play calling which has not been on par with most of the offensive units. I mean look at the Steelers for example, I would argue that Big Ben is a mediocre QB at this point in his career, and they're currently undefeated. So there you go.

Absolutely. The Bears are going to regret not getting Cam Newton this offseason. As a Panthers fan, I'm happy, I want Cam to stay in Carolina. But this time next year, the Bears fans who for some dumb reason don't want Cam, will be the same ones regretting the fact they don't have him and blaming Pace for not going to get him.
