I just bought a 2013 Prius 3 with almost 60,000 miles on it. I'm not entirely sure if the dealer had the oil and filter changed, so this video has been VERY HELPFUL! Thank you.
@RANDOMFIX5 жыл бұрын
Cedric M, Trust me the dealer didn't change the oil because even after 10k miles the oil looks clean on the Toyota Prius Hybrid, You did good by changing it and never go off the look of the look of the oil, alway 10k miles with full synthetic motor oil. _Randomfix

Thank you for all the detailed information that you provided for oil change. It helped me a lot in changing oil on my Prius. One thing I like to suggest is that a set of rubber floor mat would be a good idea when you use ramp which would keep ramps from sliding. I got a set from a local Walmart for $12.79 a piece and it definitely keeps my ramps from sliding. Thanks again for great information.

Great advice. I'm thinking of upgrading from a Gen2 to a Gen3 Prius, and though this looks like the oil change is a bit more complicated on the Gen3 than my 2005 Prius, your step by step instructions make it easy for me to understand.

Next oil change at the dealer, I'm taking a parts bucket. Last oil change a new cartridge was on the passenger seat. Service said they brought an extra out and assured me a new filter was installed. I don't burn or leak oil but I'm about half full. In the chopstick and I'm going to need a tool to unscrew the filter cap - is on super tight.

Rich, thank you so much for the great feedback. I find it easy to find trust worthy mechanics at smaller shops. Just go when you do have a problem and hang out with them and talk about life and most are cools guys. Here is a pro tip, if you see a shot install parts using power tools run, power tool are Greta for removal but when install parts it's easy to or torque everything. I always hand install.

I just got a 3rd gen Prius (my 2nd gen was totaled last month in a wreck). The plastic flap that you have to use to access the oil pan and filter.... is there someway of removing it and putting it back on correctly? Or did you just cut yours off? After I removed the pop screws that hold it in place with the rest of the aerodynamic shrouds mine only seemed to fold back, but was still a pain in the ass and totally in the way. I was using drive up on car stands like you are using and the flap was where I was constantly fighting with it. i'm going to try getting the filter wrench from Amazon that you suggested. For the FIRST TIME in my entire life (I'm 46) I didn't change the filter. The filter wrench that Autozone had that looked like the one in your video, wouldn't stay seated and break the seal (someone didn't lube the O ring most likely and it is seized to the block). I busted my knuckles several times even using a breaker bar and was unsuccessful in getting the filter loose.... I hate the new cartridge style filter, A bad move on Toyota's part IMO. Old fashioned oil filters were superior at ease of dealing with on my 2nd gen.

After resetting the engine oil change light, when does it come on again? by date or by miles? If by miles, is it 3000 miles or regular oil or 8000 miles for synthenic oil? thanks
@RANDOMFIX5 жыл бұрын
I normally drive more than average but I think it 5000 miles and I'm not sure about timing and I think it's a combination of both. So if only drive 1,000 miles a year it will turn after a year as well. Happy new year's _Randomfix

No mention of replacing the drain plug gasket. I have strip the drain plug thread on another car oil pan after multiple removal. I bought a good torque wrench and properly torque the drain plug to 29 ft-lb and the oil filter cover to 15-23 ft-lb especially with all cars now having aluminum oil pans. Living to hot Southern California I always use 10W40 oil and not the 0W20 recommended oil. When temperature exceed 100 degrees we want the higher viscosity oil and not the 20 weight. Never had engine problems in multiple cars over 35 years. Lose a little gas mileage but in the long run cheaper than excessive wear on our engines.

My oil pan is magnetic which means it is Not aluminum. I've never seen an aluminum drain pan on any car we've owned. Still if you over-torque a drain bolt you will eventually strip it out.
