I adore this deck! The "blur" you are referring to is actually intentional by the artists who created these paintings, in art history, we call it sfumato. Sfumato is a painting technique for softening the transition between colours, mimicking an area beyond what the human eye is focusing on, or the out-of-focus plane. Some of it could be varnishes too, depending on the age, state of restoration, and condition of the painting. Good ol' Leonardo is famous for this technique, and it was very popular in the revival period as they were reviving the renaissance and neoclassical arts. A renaissance of renaissance per say. I actually think I prefer the 2nd edition to the 1st. Review forthcoming (I need to clone myself.) I have no issues with reading the guidebook with a loupe (and my eyes are AWFUL, my glasses are as thick as a glass bottle!) I do, however, wish they were more detailed about the paintings and artists on each of the cards, that would have been really nice to know!

PS - Fun Fact: sfumato means 'smokiness' or 'nuanced' in Italian - which I simply adore because it does reflect that misty smokey blurry effect. Its one of my absolute favorite old master techniques!!!

8 of swords is about famous legend about princess Tarakanova, who was imprisoned in castle in Sankt-Peterburg and died during the great flood. And you could see in the picture how the water is growing in her cell.

Great deck presentation and walk through. Love your comments. I hate it when the deck maker doe not reference the art and artist. C'mon, that's what is so special about these art decks. Kat Black does a good job on here decks and Hinkel is great with her Majestic deck. You were right about that guidebook,...yikes! otherwise a beautiful deck that I hope I don't have to have. LOL

They changed that with the 2nd Edition. Better guide book, bigger text font, with info about the name of the paintings and their authors.

Super late comment on this video. I'm at the point where you're showing the Queen of Cups and you mentioned you don't see a lot of difference between the Queens. The painting of the Queen of Cups is of Empress Sisi of the Austro-Hungarian empire. She was driven by emotion a lot of the times. I haven't seen the other Queens besides the Pentacle but there was something in that painting that reminded me of someone. So I'd recommend seeing if all the Queens were real women and if the symbolize that suit. Also I adore Sisi's portraits so I was so happy to see her in this deck.

The original name for the painting on 8Sw is Princess Tarakanova. She is depicted in her prison cell which was flooded. You can see that rats are escaping the deep raising water. The rest of the story is quite interesting too. 😉 I also heard that all artwork was taken from original paintings and that is the reason why you see those crackled patina- same as you might see it in museums.

Is is soft? I know it’s an odd question. The star child Tarot by Danielle Noel has the super soft/buttery finish. I am addicted to that deck and am on the look out for other decks with similar feel.

No, not quite that soft although it does have a nice velvety finish.

Hi! Have you heard anything about Tarot being a closed Romani practice? I’m hearing this but am unsure cause there seems to be a lot of disagreement about it. Thanks!

The creators of this deck did a good job selecting Renaissance, religious and Neoclassic art.....however I can't add this deck to my collection for one reason. The Chariot card is a glaring departure from the cohesiveness of the rest of the deck for me. Even though many of the cards are 19th century paintings, the image used for the Chariot feels more modern even though it's a 19th century image as well. It just doesn't feel like it belongs in the deck. I can't quite describe why it seems to stick out so much, but for me it disturbs the flow of the deck. Just my opinion, of course. Thanks for the nice review!

I just saw it and I get what youean, it's like it comes from a different region than the other cards. For me I would have used the 6 of pentacles for the 10 because looking at the 10 of pentacles I wouldn't guess right away what it's about. However, I'd be willing to get the deck I think. Very beautiful deck! Thank you for the video!
