cant thank you enough, I bought a bike that needs custom cables, and after watching this video over and over and over again I ordered a venhill kit and got some solder and some flux and confidently soldered a new barrel on to the end and now have a perfecty functioning throttle.

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! I got the kit from you guys and figured it out on my own but just doing the quick and dirty way with the bolt/screw cable end. Now you've given me the knowledge I need to do it the right way for when the bike actually hits the road and leaves test and tune!

I can see that cable end with the flathead screw being very handy for test fitting to make sure your inner cable is cut to the proper length for your throttle travel. I'm heavily considering picking this kit up as well as a stainless brake line kit in future for my Virago 750 bobber project... maybe once riding season is over. I have exhaust and frame mods to do at the moment.

Do you have to use the bird cage? Or is there another option such as just flaring the end? Also do you crimp the fittings? ie the 90 and carb adjuster
@RevivalCycles5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to use the birdcaging tool. You can use a fine pair of needle nose pliers and create a similar shape by hand. Depending on the fittings we may crimp them or we may use an epoxy adhesive to old them in place.

How did you secure the ferrule ends to the conduit?
@sarcvicious Жыл бұрын
Also, where are the neoprene boots supposed to attach?
@RevivalCycles Жыл бұрын
To secure the ferrule ends onto the cable housing we use a ferrule crimping tool.

Where would a decompression cable fit on the spectrum of throttle, clutch and brake cables?
@RevivalCycles6 жыл бұрын
That is a good question, and I would think a throttle cable would do the job just fine. Most of the decomp cables I've seen are fairly light weight and often have routing with sharp bends and the decomp doesn't take as much force as a clutch or brake and gets used far less frequently. Based on all that I would go with throttle size housing and wire unless there has been a pattern of cable failures.

I used lead instead of solder but it stuck to the end like a SOB and now I have a glob on the end. Should I just Dremel it down clean or clip and start over? Afraid to heat up again and make cable brittle.

If you decide to try and clean it up be sure to take precautions. A mask and gloves in the very least, use a file or sandpaper not a power tool, try to contain and clean up the dust.

@@RevivalCycles will do. Decided to snip it and order some solder and a pot to attempt again. Think the flux got all over the copper while I was fumbling with cable. My cable assembly is a bit awkward due to the extra bits on there. Thanks for video and tips.

Would rosin flux paste work or would it need to be liquid?
@RevivalCycles3 жыл бұрын
It's worth a shot if that's what you have but you might find that it's difficult to get flux paste in all the nooks and crannies without also getting it up the cable where you don't want it.

Outer housing, How do I know what end is which?
@RevivalCycles4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I'm not sure I follow. The outer housing is the same on either end until you install the housing ferrules that match the throttle and carb, at which point you'll know which end is which. Hoep that helps,

We supply the materials for you tp manufacture your own cables. The kits that we offer are suitable for low to mid rise bikes. Ape Hangars will need more length. Shoot us an email if that's the case and we can take care of you.

Do I need the bird cage tool?
@RevivalCycles5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. When building a cable it's important is that you spread the wire threads in a fashion that will keep them from pulling out of the cable end. This can be accomplished with a hammer and a punch just not as effectively. The "Bird Cage" shape allows solder to fill the void making it impossible for the cable to pull out.
@soupermario225 жыл бұрын

I think it would have been much easier and healthy for the cable to cut it using a Dremmel with a cutting weel instead of side cutters
@RevivalCycles5 жыл бұрын
Since this video was produced we've found a source for the perfect tool for this task (Link below). But a good set of side cutters, emphasize the word good, will do the job just fine without unraveling or causing damage to the cable. A rotary tool would work just fine so long as you taped the area you intend to cut or else it's going to be harder than you might think. shop.revivalcycles.com/park-tool-professional-cable-and-housing-cutter/

Disappointed to find that more than half the fittings in the kit don't fit the cable you supply with it. While I have been very pleased with most everything I've gotten from Revival this kit falls a little short of my expectations.
@RevivalCycles6 жыл бұрын
Sorry you were disappointed with the kit Rick. You can pack it back up and send it back in whatever state it's in and we'll refund your money. There is only one variety of cable fitting that doesn't fit the diameter of the cable provided and there two included in the kit. Our thought is that if you have the capacity to solder your own cable end then you surely have the capacity to drill a brass fitting to the cable diameter first. If you find that more than those two will not fit the cable then it may be that the dab of solder at the cables end to keep it from fraying needs to be cleaned up. -Berry

Thank you. Only in America is solder pronounced with a silent L. Strange place. The word comes from the Latin solidare, meaning "to make solid". en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solder
@RevivalCycles5 жыл бұрын
Between the Latin meaning and present spellings/pronunciations are the Old French soudure and Middle English soudur. According to many sources, arguably I'm sure, the American Accent/Pronunciation of many words is older than British Pronuntiations which evolved to more closely match the accents royalty had begun to adopt. Strange as that might be. Riding Nerdy

That is the wrong way to solder. You never force dry the solder and do not touch, move or disturb the joint whilst it is setting. You are creating a big weaknesses for the sake a 2-3 minutes waiting for it to cool.
