Today we’re trying to find out if the Origin Effects Revival Drive Compact can act as your amp substitute while recording direct at home or going direct to front of house (FOH).
A disclaimer up front: i am not a recording artist and i do not play arenas (maybe one or two house parties a year, where i borrow an amp). I mainly play at home along with songs, backing tracks or record the occasional idea or demo track. I love gear, but I am not on the hunt for the perfect tone. All I need is ‘good enough’.
This is not a Revival Drive demo about all the things the pedal can do, the settings you see on screen right now, is pretty much a set and forget thing for me. This gets me everything I need 90% of the time. Switching pickups and riding the volume pot of my guitar will do the rest.
With that in mind, let’s find out if the Revival Drive and some IRs can get us in the vicinity of a ‘good enough’ guitar tone.
My impulse loader of choice is the Get Good Drums STUDIO CABS: ZILLA EDITION. This is a pretty new plugin and I like it, because it comes with a decent number of cabs, mics and presets but does not overwhelm you with options. I am not a tweaker and I do not have the patience to scroll through hundreds of IRs. That's why i like this plugin … pretty much the second preset i have tried, is the one you are hearing in this demo. The only thing I had to adjust was the output volume.
I will be playing a 2020 Epiphone SG Standard 61 with Probucker 2 and 3. I will indicate on screen, when i switch pickups, roll down the volume or solo different cabs.
