You probably haven't heard of underground S. But it is a major project that will revolutionise transport not only in Prague. That's why we decided to focus on it in more detail in this episode of the Live Prague series.
The biggest difference from the classic underground is that the S underground will consist of suburban trains. As the letter in the name suggests, it will actually be a Central Bohemian underground. Thanks to the ambitious 53 billion project, a dense network of tunnels and five new stops will be built in the centre of Prague, connecting to existing underground lines.
What makes the S underground project so important? 230,000 Central Bohemians commute to Prague every day (and counting), but 80% of them drive. This, of course, has a negative impact on the traffic situation in Prague and the environment. And so the train offers a logical solution. But the current suburban routes are overloaded and cannot carry as many passengers as needed. The solution is therefore to build new tracks, and only for suburban trains. They would run every 7 minutes on the main lines, and the interval between new stops would even be the same as for the conventional underground. This is already the case in Munich and Stockholm, for example.
Which way will the S underground go in Prague? The first tunnel will run from Smíchov station to Florenc, the second from Vršovice to Florenc. Both will pass through the station under Wenceslas Square, where there will also be a transfer to the underground. There will also be other new stops - Charles' square, Florenc, Bratří Synků square and Karlín. According to estimates, construction should start in 2035, and a feasibility study is currently being prepared and should be ready this summer.
And what do you think about the Metro S project? Do you think it makes sense? Let us know in the comments!
By the way, trains already have an important role in Prague's transport, although many people probably don't know it. They can even get you around the capital faster than the underground somewhere. Don't believe it? Watch our video: • Jak cestovat po Praze ...
