Once upon a time, there was a little princess and she was very sad for her mother and father had died. Before the princess was a handsome Prince, traveling on a white horse. He had a regal bearing and a kind smile. The Prince wraped the princess in a rose sented embrace and gently wipped the tears from her eyes. "Little one" he said "who bears up alone in such deep sorrow, never loose that strength or your nobility even when you are a young lady. I give this ring to remember me by. We will meet again one day." Perhaps the ring the Prince gave her was an engagement ring. This was all well and good, but so impressed was she by him that the princess vowed to become a Prince herself. Over time, the Prince traveled the globe and offered hope to other sorrowful hearts. In those years the girl prince be friended others who shared in her loneliness; a princess from a far off kingdom, a lady Knight who's love wouldn't be returned, a young and brilliant Prince who loves music, and finally a mysterious rose red girl. The girl Prince soon learned that her Prince was only a phantom now. So she decided to be her own Prince and inspired others to do the same. The rose princes soon joined the girl Prince and together the revolutionized what it means to be a Prince.

I just watched revolutionary girl utena for the first time last month because I heard it was good wlw content and the whole thing was on youtube for free. I expected it to be pretty good, like a lot of anime from its time, and what I got was something so much more mature and multi-layered than I ever would've guessed. I may not have fully understood the story, especially at the end, but this show has become one of my favorites ever in a relatively short time.

the singer is pretty good, but the choice in lyrics is pretty off, i feel the change of "i swear to you, i'll change the world" is a really pivotal point in the opening as it both works thematically and in the context of the show.
