Revolutionary War Shipwreck Phoel

On November 19, 2022 Captain Harry and the diving crew of the dive boat Constellation assisted Adjunct Professor of Marine Science Steve Nagiewicz in collecting additional information from the Revolutionary War-era shipwreck Phoel in the Mullica River that he has been documenting with his students from Stockton University. The goal for the divers was to locate and measure the ship's mast steps and take measurements of other significant identifiable parts of the vessel. Several artifacts were recovered, which are conserved and added to the Mullica River Revolutionary War display at the New Jersey Maritime Museum in Beach Haven, New Jersey.
The Phoel is named after Professor William Phoel, who first located the wreck many years ago. The true name of this unidentified shipwreck is still unknown. It was one of 10 ships sunk and burned by the British during the Battle of Chestnut Neck on October 6, 1778. Chestnut Neck was a settlement on the Little Egg Harbor/Mullica River near present-day Port Republic, New Jersey, which was used as a base by privateers during the American Revolution. The shipwreck is located in a Historic District under the management of the State of New Jersey.
