Great Tape deck! What is also interesting it the Maxell I have never seen (what I am asuming to be) a black Maxel XL-II (s?) cassette with this type of housing design. Wo kann ich ein paar kaufen?

Yes tapes made with Dolby and than played back with Dolby off sound brighter and to some ears it's sounds better. However, it's not necessarily a true representation of the original recording.
@olaniyi57012 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be a difference in the sound quality compared to the source when recording with Dolby C unless the deck is miss-calibrated or has some type of problem.

Nice deck,I never liked or used any Dolby..because of the less brighter sound..I think these decks are often used also in radiostations.. I have a sublime Nakamichi ZX-7 but want also a Revox B215.. ;)

STUDER tape decks were normally used in radio stations. Model STUDER A721. Look here: www.studerundrevox.de/studer/kassettenrecorder/studer-a721/

Amazing cassette deck, you're right. it's at the same level as the nakamichi high end players. Sadly i don't own one, but i sure hope i'll have the pleasure someday to get one.

Informative video. Nice tape deck. I am lusting for one of my own but they go for a minimum of 550 euros these days. Regarding your comment on dolby, Dolby encoded tapes played back without dolby sound overly biright, unlike the original. I prefer to record tapes that sound like the origial which the B215 and other high quality 3 head decks are capable of doing. if i want brighter sound , tone controls are available on some preamps or use an equalizer.

You did a good job on this video. I'm glad you didn't do it in Deutsch as I wouldn't have been able to understand more than a word or two of that, hehe.

ok, good point. but i also own some old nice DUAL decks. 818, 828, 822 ... and specially the 822 and for example 844 look very nice with VU metre needles, manual tape counter and cassette window illumination. my 828 is older that this one from 1985, but not that high and fat. it also has only 9 or 10 kg or, for example, the old, small and sweet grundig MCF thingys or an old yamaha k350, etc... there are loads of nice decks from same time, but more beauty (imho). but revox is better technique.

Yep this is not a XLIIs its a XLII in black. Unfortunately the U.S only got the butt ugly grey version.

My friend, that is a good machine. I only have to say that the DOLBY system only works on reproduction (PLAY) not in record mode, so there is NO DIFFERENCE on the recording if you record with dolby on or off. That button is only for PLAYBACK in EVERY deck or EVERY RECORDER in the world. The dolby system is always for playback.
@johanvanderpulst52506 жыл бұрын
Totally wrong. Check out Dolby noise reduction on Wikipedia.
@darinb.32733 жыл бұрын
CPU test Dolby noise reduction systems (no matter the flavor) actively encodes during recording and actively decodes during playback. "Dolby C is ONLY compatible with itself too" sounds horrible on machines that don't have it. Dolby and Dolby B are identical the reason for the distinction was because of Dolby C, at the decline of cassette Dolby S was introduced (too late) to complete with CD. Research it that I think you'll find it fascinating 😃👍.

I dont like Dolby either...and never use it...it dulls the sound too much for me...
@Badassvidsz5 жыл бұрын
It depends from the deck and it's dolby circuits for example i own a Technics rs-bx707 cassette deck which has 3 heads and nanual level and bias cal with also the two test calibrations tones 400Hz for level and 10KHz for bias cal and when i record with dolby C the sound of the cassette in comparison to source has slightly a little more trembles and by 2 db higher rec-level But when i record without dolby everything is intentical to the sound source So not in all decks dolbies dulls the copy .
@darinb.32733 жыл бұрын
Hello Kenny it sounds like you may have one or more issues: worn out heads, Dolby calibration issues or an azimuth alignment issue. Dolby will sound brighter because of how it works. If everything is as it should be you won't notice a difference between the source and the recording as far as treble levels. If you don't know how Dolby works, a quick search will explain what Dolby does during the recording and play back processes.

well, its fine technique, but ... if i`d own one of this revox, i`d only record on it and hide it after a door because of its uglyness. this grey brick looks like a professional studio tool for daily work, not like something i want to have in my living room. and i dont like that LCD displays... once its broken, its impossible to get parts i think. VU needle meters should be easier to handle...

Studer-ReVox tape decks are better then Nakamichi,i know,i'm a specialist for ReVox brand,i have about 40 ReVox's.
