Revithoussa is the only infrastructure in Greece today for receiving and storing LNG, liquefied natural gas, which is transported from anywhere in the world and is thus the main alternative to Russian gas.
It is no exaggeration that throughout the last months of the energy crisis, and much more of the geopolitical explosion after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the country's... energy "heart" beats on a small and uninhabited island in the Saronic Gulf a few years ago.
Soviet natural gas in Greece.
During the government of Andreas Papandreou, the project of importing natural gas was first raised. The first interstate agreement with the Soviet Union was signed in 1987 and the contract with Algeria followed in 1988.
Despite significant pressure from the USA, the Greek parliament voted in favor of the agreement with the Soviet Union, while work began at the same time to create the necessary facilities. Thus, the islet of Revithoussa was chosen, at a key point next to Piraeus and Megara. The work was completed in 2000, while many upgrading works have been carried out. Today Revithoussa is one of the most important national infrastructures of the country, as it provides security of energy supply, operational flexibility in the National Natural Gas Transmission System and increased capacity to meet extraordinary market demands.
