the perfect thing about these podcasts is that I can turn the resolution down to 144P because your faces are still recognizable and the conversation is good. Here in South Africa no-one bought a 790S - only R's were the vehicle of choice. I always thought my Honda XR650L was premium - especially so since the Clarke tank is now turning orangee red with a bit of UV so reminds me to be ready to race. Love the big L for 3rd gear wheelies. CRF250L - well, it was pretty good for what it was at the time. Solid bike in a general sense and hopelessly undersprung on the rear end for no good reason. Went pretty good on the highway and I once saw 159 km/h on a steep downhill with plenty wind from behind. That's 99 mph for the imperial guys on here. Now I managed to take my 650L down to 150kg with a full tank and it feels pretty good as a large dirtbike. I need to give credit where credit is due - back in 1998 I bought a previously crashed BMW R80 monolever airhead in Cape Town and after a short and intense rebuild travelled 80K km of Africa's finest non roads over the next 10 years. Back to current 650L situation I need to rebore previous Wiseco supposed upgrade to another 1mm oversize. I hope this nugget turns out like Gold! I once fitted an ancient Metzeler rear tyre to my XL185S engined SL 125 and was amazed how the rear tyre tried to kill me approaching a Rondebosch roundabout at speed in Cape Town. Ancient 10 year old rubber is banned in my books. I did the Namibiaring for seven years on the R80, 2 x XR600R's, a F650GS Dakar and a LR Defender 90 TDi. Apart from the Landie the XR's were the best experience.

I've had hypothermia a few times while riding. One of the worst was a summer ride; it had been in the 80s and sunny when I set out, so I put on my mesh gear, and it was 65, raining, and night when I was heading back. It was about 90 minutes riding in the rain to get home, on interstates. By that time I was shivering uncontrollably, and it took 30-45 minutes to stop, and that was doing all the 'right' things to warm up. Winter riding I'm usually prepared for - waterproof/windproof gear, insulating layers, heated gear - but it's hard to remember just how cold you can get when wet, *even when* it's warm out.

WRT the Newfoundland Rail Trail, we tried a short section back in 2018 and found the conditions too rugged for my limited skillsets. We continued through Newfoundland, took the ferry into Labrador and rode the Labrador Highway north and west which was roughly 600 miles of long/wide/mostly straight tundra roads, half of which were gravel. Cool to be in the wilderness but not very exciting riding. We were very lucky that there was no rain during the gravel section of our ride. And you really needed the "bug-net hat" in Labrador. Even in late August and only 50 F, the deer-flies were overwhelming. At the western end of the highway in Labrador City, the road turned south through Quebec. This "highway" turned out to be one of the best roads I've ever ridden on. The first 250 miles was made up of continually twisting, hilly gravel on a road that exists primarily to service the mining and hydro electric industry in that region. We passed 5 hydro dams on the trip south. Quite the spectical. Beyond the final dam, the road turned into newly paved blacktop and the last 100 miles into Baie Comeau Quebec was heaven on earth. Imagine the Tail of the Dragon but with no other vehicles on the road. Pure bliss. I recommend the trip but advise you to book accomodations in advance because there aren't many available.

Great show. Ryan F9 has made me a smarter rider. I would really like to hear Highside/Lowside talk about the new lightweight ADV movement that seems to be picking up steam. Manufacturers have put out some pretty decent bikes like the BMW 310 GS, KTM 390 Adventure, Royal Enfield Himalayan, and Honda CRF 300L Rally that appeal to new ADV riders as well as more experienced riders who want a bike that is easier to handle and ride.

Love my 2018 V-Strom 1000 ABS! Got it brand new in the crate for $9999. CANADIAN!!!! With Suzuki's 5 year Manufacturers warranty. Great low end torque that gets me off the line fast and enough power and agility (even with a 19 inch front rim) to stay with my buddies riding Ducati's, Yamaha's, Kawasaki's, Honda's, etc. naked bikes on the road and twisties. And if I want, can do some light off roading with ease. The bike is incredibly comfortable and I can do long distance trips without getting tired or sore even when I'm 10 hours in the saddle. It can haul tons of luggage and a passenger AND finally, the outstanding reliability... these bikes are bulletproof! Can't be beat. Best bike I own and have ever owned.

I love....LOVE the 790/890, but the semi active suspension on the 1290 S is a game changer for me. I would buy the bike to commute to work, and the road conditions change quite a bit from twisty mountain roads to the tortured pavement of a city. A 890 with SAS that has the mannerisms of the WP suspension on the R models would be awesome. I'm a big guy too, 350 soaking wet and I don't think the 790 is underpowered but I fear I would look like Grape Ape on a smaller machine.

Being I own one, therefore biased... But!, have either/any of yall ever rode the SV1000, and why has Suzuki never revisited it being it was only made from 03-07? The 650 is/was successful, the TL was a legend, and the naked/semi-faired market is the best its ever been, which is exactly where a re-vamped Sv1000 would fit in, especially while now having great competitors via tuonos and super dukes. Suzuki has everything they need: a new updated frame in the 650, an updated engine from the Vstrom 1000, and a market for a torquey, powerful naked bikes soooo.... why no SV1000. I love love love my 06, but Id buy a new one in a heartbeat.

Great show- and having Ryan was the best! One thing you guys who scoff at the big adv bikes, keep forgetting is the smaller capable machines like the Verysys 300x, CRF300 Rally, KTM 390 adventure- those are the new lightweight adventure bikes that experienced riders are gravitating towards. I dont think reviewers give enough credit to these small advs but there has been a shift in the market and we should acknowledge how important these smaller machines are- and they can only get better maybe with the blessings of the the oracles here ;)

On the subject of small bore turbo motorcycle, I ride a WR250R and I see 5 excellents reasons for it to be turbocharged from the factory: -Emission. Dual sport are having a hard time staying alive because of this so if turbo help to keep this segment alive, I’m in. -License. There is a lot of place in the world where you have different license with limited engine displacement. That would allow people to get more punch with the same license. Taxes, registration and insurance. All of these expenses tend to increase with engine displacement. -Low end torque. If you look at dynochart of turbo engine, you see a flat line of torque that start very early in the rev range. If I could get 20ft lbs lbs of torque from 3000 rpm, it would already be a major improvement in performance since my bike hit like 17 ft lbs at 8000 rpm. Yes it might add a little bit of turbo lag but I don’t want them to put the biggest spinny boy they could find. They could just put a tinny one that might be slightly inefficient for high hp but has a great response and it would pack more easily. Also, having a softer hit compared to bike with modern injection could be enjoyable for some and for those which like a more aggressive engine, they could easily install a few engine mode like we see on some fancier bike so that everyone is happy. -Making cool noise.

Last year’s MotoGP season was amazing, and it was so good because Mark Marquez was absent. I don’t dislike the guy, and I really don’t want anyone to be injured, BUT removing the ultimate outlier really made for a much more interesting and surprising season. Last year there were NINE different race winners instead of Marquez and the two people that won the races that he crashed out of. With whiney prima donna Jorge Lorenzo retired there’s nobody in the paddock that I’d cheer against winning. I’m cheering for Fabio Quartararo because he’s fun to watch and because the Yamahas have a top speed disadvantage. That means that when a Yamaha beats a Ducati, it’s due to the riding instead of the ability to open the throttle all the way on a straightaway.

Aprilia owner here. Had 2 so far, one was a little 125 when I was starting off years ago and now on my Tuono 660 which is my daily. I'd agree on Aprilia not having as much as that air of speciality among the Italian bikes. I'd say something like an RSV4 is desinged by the engineers to go fast rather than to follow some kind of styling philosophy or heritage. Have a look at the old 2 strokes (Suzuki RGV engines), and the old V twins (Rotax engines). Solid (to an extent) bikes that do their job with a just a bit of specialness that makes them Italian.

I missed questions about dct gearboxes. All cars are moving to automatic gearboxes and many bikes are doing quick shifters but I think dct is the next logical step

A fellow Canadian. The kind of guy that would be a blast to go riding with. Doesnt need a litre bike to boost his ego. I am in a position to buy whatever bike I wanted but ride a KLR at the moment because it makes me smile. A T7 is most definitely my next when I can buy one after it depreciates and comes pre scratched. Love the fact that he answered the door, not above taking off the headphones and saying thanks to the delivery guy (now thats Canadian)

First of all, huge fan of all you, but not going to lie I have been following Ryan for a long time. Bucket list, sitting down with you all and chatting about bikes. While you guys were talking I was pretending I was the one being asked the question and dang it man you in some way we had the same thoughts collectively. What an awesome chemistry. Love the love/hate relationship of Zack and Spurg.

Hope to get you guys back soon! This show is my favorite thing to listen to while I ride to work. One critique, I usually listen on Spotify, through my SENA's helmet speakers, and I find myself adjusting the volume a lot because once person's voice will come in painfully loud while another's is barely audible over the road/ exhaust noise. And it's not the same for each episode. Sometimes I never have to touch it, sometimes it have to adjust it for each person. Otherwise, best podcast!

Hello! This is Joe... turbo Bruce’s son. I had the Aprilia RSV4, I recently switched over to a 2020 S 1000rr w/ M package, full titanium exhaust with Brent tuning stage two. Crazy bike! My dad has the KTM 390 duke and our specific question was wouldn’t it be nice if we had a small displacement bike with a turbo, that way when we hit the throttle we still have strong acceleration, but then when we are off boost we have fuel economy. The average car With a 2 L turbo (off boost) will flow a certain cubic feet per minute adequate for a normally aspirated 2 L. That same engine when on boost Will flow roughly 1/3 more cubic feet per minute more air to be mixed with fuel to obtain stoichiometric ratio which is 14.7 but they usually run a little richer, more like 12.8. I own a turbo charged 2 L Car and I like the benefits of the range, fuel economy with performance. So our initial question was just wanting good performance while having good range. We live in the south west and there are many great roads but sometimes gas stations can be quite far apart. I’d like to have a smaller engine bike with good range but I do love my performance. If you just increase the size of the bike engine, yes you obviously get more performance but we were the range of the smaller bike and the performance of the bigger bike as we sometimes compare and contrast our motorcycles. Turbo chargers can allow you to have your cake and eat it too. The turbo leg that you were talking about has been negated with electronic and dual solenoid wastegate, also retarding the timing when the turbo kicks in many things can be done in the algorithms of the ECU to smooth the turbo lag. You talked about the VTEC motor cycles of the early 2000s but forgot to mention my bike which is the same technology… To cams for the price of one. I can tell you that Bmw does it very smoothly and I don’t mind it kicking in at 9000 RPMs and a deep lean angle. This was a very good episode I’m a big fan Revzilla and Ryan. Thanks for the Great pod. -“stingy stoichiometric” Joe

Maybe a topic to dig into deeper is why the ADV is replacing the Tourer (look at how few Touring models there actually are now) as the bike of choice on which to tour.
