My 900ss Ducati had the oil filter recessed into the engine case and a torque spec of like 20 ft lb for some reason . Needless to say KN pot metal hex was rarely up to being removed making the psycho method of just stabbing it pretty much the standard procedure .

There is no worse feeling than changing your oil and not spilling a drop. Then accidentally knocking over the container you used for your used motor oil just before you were about to cap it.

as per my manual, i only change my filter every 3rd oil change... I've never used the same amount of oil on a change, so premeasuring like above I would never do...I use my eye to know its at the right level Put some oil in the filter, put some oil on the gasket on the filter as well, that will help it come off easier next time... I've only ever used my hands for filters in 35 years... As long as you do it in the proper intervals and lube the gasket, it wont need a wrench.

I knew the screwdriver trick when my original filter wouldn't budge with the filter wrench with a paper towel between. I chopped most of the filter in half in one good heave. I've now learned of flathead screwdriver at an angle to softly slow "tap" the filter loose. And when I say softly I mean I was too gentle and it took 5 minutes of love tapping and promising the bike things to let go of the filter.

Please *do not* drive a screwdriver through your oil filter. I've been there, almost damaged my bike driving the screwdriver too far. It also almost didn't work. The screwdriver was just ripping through the filter instead of turning it, and it made a huge mess. The gasket on the filter wasn't lubed from the factory. Those other filter wrenches are also basically useless when that happens, but theres a kind you can buy that goes on a ratchet and has "fingers" that clamp down on the outside of the filter and create indentations as you're trying to loosen it. This gives it amazing grip as it squishes down into the filter. It's a bit tricky to get started, but works way better than a screwdriver and it's cheap. Get one of these, you can find them at Wal-Mart.

Curious what bike because most are relatively simple with some exceptions for poorly designed full fairing bikes (those suck). For me it is actually a time thing because on two my three bikes it takes 15 minutes for the change but about 5 minutes set up and 10 minutes clean up after. The shop the one time I did it was 90 minutes AFTER the 20 minute wait to check in. Oh, an no lift here...two tools, a drain pan and a funnel for one bike...one tool for the other...we won't mention the third bike.

A proper size filter wrench is a must. Avoid straps, most won't let you torque new filters to spec with them and alot of strap wrenches won't give you enough of a throw to turn the filter in the first place because exhaust headers or frame or something will be in the way. I was working on a security company Honda ST1300 that had a stuck filter. It was a round filter so no socket attachment would work and it was so seized on the engine that when I punched a screw driver through and tried to turn it, it just ended up tearing the top half of the filter off. So use a filter that accepts a aocket attachment and torque the filter to manufacturer spec (usually 11-14Nm on most manufacturers I've seen but check your manual), not hulk tight

The first filter I took off my NC700X was so tight that I resorted to the screwdriver through the filter trick, only to tear off the top of the filter. So if that happens, there's one more trick. Get a cold chisel, and tap it into the base of the filter, till it gets a good notch going. Then you can use a big hammer and a large flat head screwdriver to hammer that filter around. Be careful not to gouge the block.

For anyone with a hard to reach oil filter I STRONGLY RECOMMEND the K&N Oil filters because they have a bolt on the end making getting them off sooo easy. My 1999 BMW 1100r oil filter slips up into a hole so a strap wrench doesn't fit and seems to be a weird size so the normal oil filter socket tool doesn't grab enough. First time I had to stab it with a screwdriver to remove it because it was your basic oil filter.

Generally I think K&N makes garbage products so I wouldn't trust them anyway, but I've heard of a few cases where that "bolt" on the end of their filters just breaks off.

One hint for anyone with some bare tools that happen to cross stuck oil filter. Get a decent length bolt that you have socket or box end wrench that fits. Then cut the thread end with angle grinder or hacksaw. Now get piece of strap that goes around the filter and put its ends through that slit just made. Open filter. There can be cases where some idiot has put filter way too tight into something you can't fit any tool. In worst case if you hammer screw driver through filter you can make it just torn apart in place. I've encountered this couple of times and since moved into this bolt and strap strategy and it hasn't ever failed.

Oh man, overfilling... While on vacation, traded houses with a couple in Barcelona for a couple of weeks, nice appartment with a parking place in the basement in a shared sub-terrain garage. So I noticed the oil level of my bike had gotten a bit low, bought some oil, went to fill it. Darn! Too much... Since I didn't have all the equipment I have at home, I decided to drain a bit from the drain plug. Loosened it a bit, very small drip. Loosen some more, lost hold of the plug... Exxon. Valdez. In a half-panic I decided to throw my long sleeve shirt on the (by then) pretty substantial oil stain. Later with a lot of paper towels the parking spot got pretty clean again, since the floor was very dusty to begin with it may actually have been cleaner after my unintended oil bath. But man, that sure ruined the shirt! Oh, only now got to 3:59

I used to use the screw driver method all the time on my car lol. I didn't have any other tools to get it off. Brutal but effective

Re: stabbing the filter with a screw driver. I've done it, it worked. But it was shitty and messy. I recommend getting a filter with a nut on the end, like K&N or something like that. Works like a charm.

My favorite oil-change hack is the one where you only ride 2-strokes. In street bikes which pretty much all had automatic injection, this just means topping up the oil tank every once in a while. Then change the transmission oil like once a year or something; clutch and gear debris is kept out of the engine so you can let it go longer. And no oil filters, ever. My SECOND favorite hack is the Aquafina trick. Bikes will vary, but at least on all the vintage Yamahas and Kawasakis I've had, the dipstick/filler threads are the same as an Aquafina water bottle. So cut the top off to make a funnel, then you can thread AND TORQUE your new funnel in place. It flows faster than a "real" funnel, is sealed from spills, and can't get knocked out of place or bottom-out on your clutch or whatever is down there. This was very valuable during that dark time when I owned my 4-stroke Yamaha and thus had to dick around with oil constantly.

2:41 when i was a kid and used to do oil changes on my parents and relatives cars a couple times i used a screwdriver and stabbed the spin on oil filter straight through and used the screwdriver to turn it if it was way tight. It was on an early 90s VW and very little room to reach it. Anyways i comment as i watch most videos :)

Don't use rubbing alcohol as a solvent for cleaning oils. It is only 70% alcohol, the other 30% is water. Go to a home improvement store and purchase pure IPA (isopropyl alcohol). Note: Not all home improvement chains stock solvents (other than paint thinner). I can purchase IPA at my local Home Depot but not at Lowe's.

If you don’t have a strap wrench, you can use a belt or nylon ratchet strap with vise-grip pliers. Works great in small places.

I actually had to use one of those hose clamps that has a screw to get a grip on my oil filter. Didn't have tools and it was a tight spot!

What works way better then laying cardboard down is puppy training pads. Even though it’s pricey you can reuse the pad until it’s filled with oil. Since the puppy pads are like diapers it just absorbs the oil up. Plus you don’t need to worry about kitty litter either cuz if you have an oil spill flip the pad over and bam soaks it up.

At 4:39 when you're talking about obvious ways to avoid spills (the "use a funnel" segment) - it also helps if you pour the oil correctly, with the opening at the top, so that air can get in, and it pours smoothly. Don't feel bad, every single KZbin oil change "expert" holds the bottle upside down when they pour oil as well.

I tried the screwdriver method once. The filter was on so tight from the dealer the screwdriver shredded halfway through the filter. I eventually coaxed it off with channel locks and I keep a pair in my garage to this day to coax stubborn filters off!

Sawdust is another great spill absorbant, in case you're changing oil near or in a wood shop there is likely plenty around.

Over filled at least to top of slight glass is absolutely fine. When the engine is running. Oil isn’t even visible due to pump sucking it up. Now if when on there’s still oil above site glass. Then yes that’s too much oil and will froth from crank. I always fill to top line but oil in filter and head always raise it to top of site glass. Which is fine as once one oil is pumped by more than half by oil pump.

I've found that if the oil filter is secured using a bolt (ninja 250 comes to mind here), a breaker bar is your best friend. Stick your head under the bike, remind yourself which way to loosen it, put it up on the centerstand (And have an assistant hold the bike still if needed), and apply constant pressure until it gives. Do the first turn or two with the breaker bar, and then it'll be loose enough to just spin off by hand. Let any remaining oil drain, pull the old filter and seals off, clean, dry, and reinstall. Most tedious part is waiting for the water to fully dry off. The hardest part for me was actually tracking down the requisite 17mm socket head and 1/2" to 1/4" socket adapter at my local hardware store

For my Sportster have to get a soft drinks bottle and cut a section out of it so it fits under the oil filter to catch the oil released when I unscrew it to avoid oil getting in places difficult to clean.

My first ever oil change it was on so tight, I stabbed the oil filter, and when turning it just kept sheering the metal casing enlarging the hole without unscrewing, it was frustrating. From then on, I only ever trust myself with my vehicles.

Very important tip if you need a good size of cardboard for an area, just buy a 55" TV since those boxes are big enough for one side to fit under the bike, and the rest can be used to make custom sizes for anything you need to work on

My dealer slightly overfilled the oil at the complementary service when I bought the bike, I didn't notice right away as it was half way between the max level and the top of the sight glass, but I did notice on the first couple of rides my cam chain tensioner was playing up at aroun 4krpm. I meant to take it back to get checked at it had a 90 day warranty, but the dealer was far and then I noticed the oil was high. I tried chaning the oil and filter and boom, no more cam chain issues!
