I think people need to be warned that such bikes draw tonnes of attention. I ride Grom in a big city and regularly get people stop and ask me about it. Other motorcyclists know very well what it is but still chat me up and ask questions. Car drivers pull their windows down and talk to me about it. Pedestrians point fingers at me and smile. Whereas when I ride a 600cc bike nobody gives a damn.

It's strange hearing that as someone from the UK. 125s are so common here, nobody would ever stop to chat about it. The kind of things people are interested in because they're unusual/rare are things like Harleys, R18's and anything that looks vintage. Even custom Bonnevilles turn heads despite Bonnevilles being very common here.

I love that you’re speaking directly to new riders for this review. I was in the same place when KZbin was new, brings back great memories. Welcome all, dip a toe in! And little bikes aren’t just for newbies. After years of a number of baggers and one Bonnie, my current main ride is a 200cc Van Van. Little bikes are just a different kind of fun!

It would be nice if you could include a shot of you on the motorcycle in your reviews. People could then more easily assess whether the motorcycle would suit them in terms of dimensions or not. And it would mean a lot to me because we are practically the same height and build. Well, maybe in future videos you can include that little detail that would mean a lot to some people. Other than that, everything is great, you're doing a great job, not only in the daily rider but also in the podcast, and especially on adventures with Ari.

Just building off what someone else mentioned-@chaseontwowheels sprinkles in 3rd person shots like b-roll, but it never messes with the ‘one-on-one in the helmet’ connection. Feels like it adds depth without losing that raw, solo rider vibe. Might be worth a try!

@@batterybuilding Okay, I understand what you're saying, and I agree with you. I am aware of the style and dimensions of this motorcycle, as well as who it is intended for. It's just that it wasn't my thought directed specifically to this model. I thought the same thing a few times when I was looking at Zack's reviews, I just happened to leave a comment about it now. Because I'm basically too big for any motorcycle I like, because I mostly like and ride old classic bikes, or new ones that look like them. And every time a new model appears that I'm interested in, I look for a review so that I have an idea whether it would suit me or not. However, I always get a video from some guy who is obviously 160cm, but claims to be 185cm. And when I thought that bike would suit me, I go to the dealership only to realize that it is to small.And since Zack is more or less my build, I'd love that shot of him on the bike for some future reviews.

For anybody who has never spent any meaningful time riding one of Honda's semi-auto, I can promise you it doesn't detract from the experience at all. That is coming from someone who would consider myself a "purist" or "old-school". I grew up on Z50s and I promise these semi-auto Hondas have a personality and a way about them that is all there own, and it will win a spot in your heart.

Honda's models are truly unique and stand out as collectible pieces. What makes them special is that Honda, unlike many other brands, actually designs and releases these models purely for the joy and passion of it, not just for profit. This approach is increasingly rare in today’s market, where most companies are primarily driven by financial gains. We are incredibly fortunate to have access to these creations, especially in times like these. Honda’s commitment to innovation and fun deserves our recognition and gratitude. As enthusiasts, we should show our support by expressing appreciation and providing positive feedback to the brand. Letting Honda know how much their efforts are valued can go a long way in encouraging them to continue creating these exceptional and enjoyable products.

Honda can add more joy to the Ruckus by adding fuel injection after almost 3 decades. I’d own one if it weren’t for California gas gumming up carburetors. I get your point, but don’t think that Honda isn’t driven by profit, look at every bike that shares the 500cc and the 1100cc. It’s like they have a big red “P-twin” easy button on the R&D bosses desk. Just like any of the big four do. I guess that’s there bread and butter and yes Honda chooses to spoil us with these bikes, even though I think these are there money makers.

@ You're making a great point. But let me tell you that I had a Honda Monkey from 2023 and in comparison to most other 125cc bikes in the market, the Honda Monkey 125 truly stands out, especially with its top-notch construction and attention to detail. The quality of its chrome parts, the overall build, and the premium finish put it in a league of its own. For example, bikes like the **Honda PCX 125** are certainly more affordable-around €1,200 less-but they're built with a lot of plastic components, which don't have the same durability or classic aesthetic appeal as the Monkey. The Monkey's retro-inspired design combined with high-quality materials and craftsmanship makes it a head-turner and an excellent long-term investment, especially for riders who value style and substance. If we consider other 125cc bikes, they often sacrifice some of the finer details to keep costs down. For instance: - The **Kawasaki Z125** or **Yamaha MT-125** focus on performance but lack the vintage charm or chrome detailing. - The **Keeway or Lexmoto models** are more budget-friendly but often lack durability and premium finishes. With 25,000 km in just 8 months on my Monkey, I’ve clearly tested its reliability. No issues whatsever. That kind of mileage in such a short time speaks volumes about the bike’s endurance and quality. Few 125cc bikes can handle that kind of usage while still looking and performing as well as the Monkey does!

Just a fun video, Zak. Thanks fo0r riding this Dax exactly as it was designed to be ridden. My CT70 memories are very good ones. For someone who was just starting out, the low power, low center of gravity, great manners of this platform were just what I needed to learn good general motorcycle skills. This motorcycle and yes, it is a motorcycle, is made for getting there with a smile. It is a short haul, city, rural road motorcycle. It can kill itself getting to 55 on the interstate but why. The big seat and large sidewall, soft tires are made to give a great, relatively low speed ride. It gets awesome gas mileage. Like many of Honda's other small displacement motorcycles, this is a bike the deserves to be made because it is such a great ambassador to motorcycling; to beginners and those who just need a great way to get there cheaply and dependably. Maintain it, ride it ,enjoy it for a very long time.

One quibble, it isn't a true "slushbox". It is a "Semi-automatic" (iirc the term in the manual for the 71 CT70 I used to ride) and has two clutches (dual clutch before it was cool!) with a regular plate clutch and a centrifugal one for the lack of a lever, But there is a lever built into the shifter. Pushing or Pulling the lever opens the plates like a lever and one of the old launch tricks of the CTs and the ATC/FourTrax was to pull it into Gear but not let up, rev the motor and slide (or sidestep depending on traction) the lever back into the rest position, launching down the track/trail/road.
@mattw6585

Exactly! You can pop (bump) start it that way too. Hold the shift lever up,get it rolling on a hill then let off the shift lever.

@@mattw6585 Yes, I moved the motor of mine to a new frame (I t-boned a car and bent the T-bone frame!) and it was messed with by someone and didn't want to start. I lived up on a bluff, and when part way up the road on the hill, I put it in 2nd and rolled back down the hill, this moved enough air to clear the paper towel stuffed in the exhaust pipe, and fired up the bike. We also got an ATC 110 to fire after flooding them that way, when the hydrolock caused the pull rope to break. Pull plug, tow to clear, put plug back and tow until it fired. The 110 would float well, but roll it sideways too far and they'd suck a bit of H2O.

Hi Zack. I enjoy all of your reviews. I am a 75 year old who started riding last Spring when i passed my MSF course. I wanted a Kawasaki Ninja 400 but by the time I ordered it they had moved to the 500. I enjoyed it so much that I purchase, after watching your review, a Kawasaki Z650rs to go with the Ninja. Then at Christmas i began thinking back 61 years ago to my first and only other motorcycle experience. My friend in high school had a Honda 50 Cub. I road it around the block one time without my parents ever knowing about it. I wanted one so bad. So as a gift to myself i did it. I bought a Honda 125 Supercub. All are in storage for the winter at the dealership and will be delivered to me at the end of April. The two bigger bikes will go back in storage in October but the Supercub will stay with me all year. I missed out on about a month of fun this past fall. Probably could use it in April until the Ninja and Z come home. I wished i had started my riding adventure 60 years ago. But Love it now. PS. I live close to where you and Ari grew up. Rode a Honda CB125R for a couple of years (a 2022 model). It got 121MPG over that two year period. Felt quite like a 'big bike' too as size wise it's identical to the 300cc version. Quite a wide front end so has a bit of presence on the road. Never skiiped a beat despite not being that well looked after. Hondas are fantastic. Even the 'beginner' models.

Just for anyone watching the part about being smooth, you can slowly release the shift lever and it will act just like a manual clutch. In fact you can clutch dump it by clicking into first and slowly release the lever as you accelerate. If you think about it this concept could be used for those used to foot actuated auto clutches. Don't care if it's old tech, it's really simple, it works and really if you think about it Honda was ahead of their time when this was invented and it's really timeless if it's still functional all these years later. Edit: Posted before he showed how to do it LOL.

I have a soft spot for these little Honda's. My first motorbike of any type was a Honda Metropolitan scooter. I had a ton of fun on that little thing scooting around Houston. This Dax looks like a lot of fun too.

Honda semi autos are essentially the same gearbox as the manual version. The clutch plates on the manual version are opened slightly with the clutch lever to allow for gear changes. The clutch plates on the semi auto are opened slightly when you move the shift lever up or down, allowing for gear changes. I forget if they have a flyweight or one way bearing that allows for idle in gear.

Back in high school 30 years ago i was riding my dad's '77 Honda CB550-4 in a twisty road area when i spotted a Rottweiler ahead up on a big hill at a fancy house. I didn't think too much of it despite knowing locals train their dogs to be very aggressive. As i got 2 houses away he came charging down the large hill so i kicked down a gear, gunned it, and...sputtered, misfiring like crazy. Kicked down to first, wound it out and barely got past him with my left leg lifted as high as possible. I took over maintaining the bike after that.

These small bikes are the bomb for short trips around town compared to a car or rolling out the big bike. I put a wire basket on the rack of my Super Cub for carrying groceries, and there's always somewhere to park it.

Young people may not understand the niche market this is aimed at, but as a rider who missed the ct70s and z50s back in day, I'm soo thankful my chance to finally experience ownership of such an iconic, and characterful bike, has come back around, the 4x minis are perfect and perfectly timed, my Monkey is as easily much fun as the zx9r I gave up to downsize, I was lucky enough to ride a Dax for 2hours when my monkey was getting its 4 thou mile warranty service, I loved the gears, the style and the ability to carry two, amazing bikes, We love mini Honda's even though build quality has lost it's magic formula now..💁‍♂️🙌

Another thing about these engines, They are an iron barrel with rings that do need a few hundred miles to break-in, so the top end performance of the engine with less than 100 miles will be a little slower than when it's had it's first oil change and tune-up at the dealer at 300 miles. The old Honda OHV C-100 ( 50 cc ) from the early 60's needed a break-in just to manage over 35 mph. There is a definite improvement overall in the engine power as the break in completes. Usually you keep the full throttle runs short and let it cool down occasionally.

If you hold the shifter up or down it's like holding the clutch and you can easily blip the throttle before down shifting to rev much. Here in Greece this type of transmission as well as this type of engine is probably more than half of two wheeled vehicles driving around

I'm an expat out in the Philippines and ride a CB650R soon to be ZX10R. 125cc reign supreme here but they are considerably more comfortable and affordable than this. I see 125cc all day long from anywhere between $1.5-2k. Nice seats with a second for a passenger, suspension for the unpredictable road conditions and just all round better commuters. Raider, NMAX, VMAX are a few I'm somewhat familiar with.

I love how they kept this thing pretty much the same other than modernizing it from the original CT70. If I had 4 1000 laying around I would 100% pick up either this or the monkey to throw in the back of my truck for when I go camping. Lots of dirt roads and slow speed secondary Rose around me so one of these things would be an absolute blast

Back in 2015 I bought one, albeit it was the Chinese version, Skyteam, also 125cc, (4 speed, with manual clutch) I still have it, and in town it's a charm, weaving in and out of traffic, can park in just about anywhere, and I believe I'm about the one and only here in The Hague, Holland. Back in the late 70ties, I saw more of them, especially in the South of France. In the early 80ties I owned one too for 2 years, that was a genuine Honda (4 speed, no manual clutch). In 2016 we owned a camper and the Skyteam went with us, made a nice 65m trip around the Gorge of the Ardeche in France, riding with a pillion was possible -just-. I did take a good look at this new Dax, certainly, but this Skyteam has 2 advantages, compared with this new Dax, it has a larger fuel tank, 5.5l, compared with 3.8l of the new Dax, AND it weighs in with some 30kg's LESS than the new Dax, 106kg's versus 75kg's, and for a small bike with not really much hp, that counts! I did change the front brake caliper, like the one on the new Dax.

I was doing the one hand ting the other day, it meant a minimum speed of 10km/h but it never stopped me from going right through the gearbox in both directions, it just meant that if I actually had to stop, I was hurting a broken finger. (nope, it's not bad, I'm not even going to worry about splinting it, it only hurts if I put pressure on it... right now I'm typing with it) Be honest, footless stops isn't about bettering yourself; it's a mini challenge... a GAME! just like creeping at 3km/h in traffic without putting feet down. or seeing if you can get sparks coming off the footpegs.

Every motorbike unthusiast should have a 125 in his garage. I enjoy my 1986 XLR to commute to work, especially in winter with traffic and poor road conditions, so easy. Not as fuel efficient as the modern ones but stills very cheap to use and service. This Dax seems cool, but I should prefer a Groom I think.

Old Honda CT70 owner here. I love the style of this new model, but wish it had the higher chrome front fender of yore. My main problem is the price. $4200 plus dealer fees, even if reasonable, is just too much for me. I feel my Honda Trail is a much more capable and versatile bike, for a couple hundred dollars less. The fit and finish of these little Hondas is usually top notch, so if this is the style you want, go for it. Honda reliability is legendary, and this little bike will give you many years of service with minimal maintenance.

Q: Who's it for? A: Europeans with an A1 licence (provisional) Honda are pretty smart to dominate that market as every motorcyclist in Europe has to ride a 125 at some point.
@VarvasNukka
@VarvasNukka 10 күн бұрын
Not necessarily. You can go straight to the full unrestricted A license so long as you're old enough (24). Going through the A1 and A2 classes just allows you to get it younger.

@@VarvasNukka Fine as long as you don't mind coming into biking 7 years later than you could with a provo and a 125. Most who are keen to get onto two wheels don't want to wait, hence Honda puts such a variety of 125's out in Europe.

@@docthebiker Sure, mainly made that post to clear it up for the people coming in later or thinking about it so they don't think they HAVE to start out with a 125cc. Me personally I only got interested in bikes at 24 specifically so I jumped straight into a v-strom 650.

@@VarvasNukka When I started out you would put your L plates and did your test on a 250. Wish I'd done that at the time, but I did enjoy chucking my DT125 about. It's Sooo bloody complicated now. 21 yo I could ride anything after my test. Now it's all ageXpower to weight you need to work out before even looking for a bike. Can you still ride peds and L plated 125's with a full car licence, or do you need a Master's in advanced calculus?

You can get a dual seat for the super cub. Also, if you want to do a wheelie on the dax, pull it into 1st gear but keep the pressure on the gear lever. Rev it up a bit and let the pressure off the lever and a wheelie will ensue. Be careful though, it flips very easily.
