Mo demonstrates how she reinforces calm behavior in the dogs. We also discuss a few unwanted behaviors people mistakenly reinforce all the time. Enjoy!

Thank you for clarifying that an under exercised dog won't be calm! It frustrates me to no end to see people going like "yeah he's just crazy all the time how annoying 🙄" when it's literally just a dog bored out of its mind desperate for their basic needs to be met. Dogs are still dogs no matter how much you expect them to act like stuffed animals

Something else you should mention when it comes to dog training, is don't expect your puppy to get it right all the time every time and that most dogs are still in the puppy stage until they are 2 and large breeds can be 3 before they start to loose that crazy puppy energy.

I used to use the, “Well done, I can see 6 of you sitting up straight ready to begin..” which would be followed by a general pulling in of chairs and straight backs. Anticipatory praise and describe what you want of them. Make it easy for them to get it right. 😂

I just tried your technique when we got home from running errands. Duck (the dog) starts crying as soon as we get in house. I’d feel guilty and love her as she jumped out of her crate. Tried your suggestion and made her stay until she sat quietly. Only lasted 2 seconds but it’s a start. Funny thing is, she calmly walks to crate when we want her to. Stays quietly until we return. The goes crazy when we open the door. She’s been training me. I like it “What you pet is what you get”

Another dog trainer once told me that when she gets home, she completely ignores her dogs for the first few minutes so that coming home is not a big "event" for the dog. After a few times of this, once the dog realizes that nothing exciting happens when the human gets home, they no longer freak out about it.

So funny! My kids are in their 40’s now. Growing up on a farm, apparently, I trained my kids the way the animals were trained . I wasn’t aware of it until someone pointed it out. When my 4-year-old misbehaved, I’d snap my finger and he’d stop immediately and look at me. For my 2-year old, I’d clap a single time and he’d stop and look at me. I could let them play with neighbors and just a single whistle and they’d come home as soon as they heard me. Sometimes their fun was so noisy they’d need a repeat whistle. Almost always the whistle was for something tasty or fun, but sometimes a chore reminder. I was ALMOST always calm, but I was normal. Funniest thing was when a neighbor whistled for their own pet and all of the neighbor kids would run to my house for a treat.

I really like it when my dog jumps on me for cuddles. Really backfired tho when she's around the young, elderly, or that time I had surgery with stitches on my stomach. I couldn't see her for a week because my stitches needed time to set... which was the correct move bc the second I saw her she rammed into my side. Luckily I was cautious and waited to see her so no injury... but it really emphasized how the jumping is bad even if I love it.

We have a big dog (37kg rottweiler x belgian malinois mix) and when we rescued her she would jump all the time. I'm only 5'4 so when she jumps up, she's my height, but I'm like you - I love the cuddles! But it is dangerous! We therefore first trained her to stop jumping (ignored her when she was jumping, rewarded her when she sat nicely), and then trained her to jump up for cuddles on command - we use 'hi5' but it's really high 10. If we now put both palms up, she jumps up. Can still get cuddles, but only when it's appropriate - no accidental injuries or unwanted jumping :)

Perfect. I used to work in a boarding kennels, and I enforced the same rules. When I first started, I was blown away by the amount of dogs that just shoved their way through the doors, and it was so easy to get hurt from them doing this. On top of that, the owners of the kennels were elderly and it concerned me that they might need to evacuate the dogs in the night, for some emergency, and could get knocked down. So, I stopped letting the dogs out until I had them calm. If they tried to shove, I'd shut the door before they got through. I had so many owners come up to me and say how well behaved their dogs were after staying with us.

I'm not sure if you did already on here or TikTok, but can you make a video explaining the designated "model" members of the pack (like Jake and Amaru) and their role in it? Second question: Is Mina considered a model dog? I recall you stating on a TikTok comment reply that she is/was a professionally trained service animal, which explains her demeanor and how she seems to consistently looks to you for leadership. She also gives the vibe of mama dog whenever I watch her with the pack 😊

My dog is well trained (and I cut off jumping, now he is trying to lay as low as possible) but he has a buddy (lab and alabay mix) who is a very big boy (+/-30kg) who loves to jump on people when he is overwhelmed. I don’t mind jumping on me in the dog park (that’s why I have “dog clothes” in case I stain them badly with mud or something like that). But he is heavy and a little obese dog, sometimes I think he could pin me down. And my dog had a bff who is LOUD. He is so loud sometimes I had a headache after a 1-2h walk. He barks on everything. And his owner is fine, she said “oh he is mute at home so I allow him to bark here”. Okay but I was tired of getting pills after dog walks and I was glad my pup stopped playing with him because he grew up.

Situational…maybe the command has their name in it and your then going to correct the dog for ignoring the cue. But calling your dog to you and scolding is a big no no. Vocal fluctuation is really the key. Dogs know high pitch baby talk vs yelling at them.

I have mostly had cats. Most of my family had dogs. I have cohabited with dogs in the past, and they were lovely. “ people “ to be around .Today 100% of my friends who have dogs will never follow these instructions. In fact, I felt as if I have a better handle on dog behavior, and how to train and raise nice calm, friendly, lovable dogs, than 100% of my dog owning friends. It’s truly frustrating because if I want to go visit those friends, I have to accept that I’m going to be barked at jumped and climbed all over from the moment I come in the door. If I go on a hike with a friend who has a dog or two we can expect my friend to get all tense is soon as other dogs everyone on leash mind you come from the other direction because there a dog can’t handle seeing other dogs walk by. And the excuses start all my dog has a thing about big dogs oh my dog hasn’t been socialized because she had Pavo when she was a baby and then I got overprotected and blah blah blah. Oh my dog is doing her job. She’s protecting my house well when I try to say your dog is not doing their job, because it’s never been taught its job. It’s job is to know the difference between what is it is not a threat. Your dogs job is not to jump all over your friends when they come to visit. It’s not cute. I’ve been told I’m “just not a dog person.“ well, here, I see a video of a woman who is clearly a dog person, and understands what it is that I try to gently get across to my dog owning friends. But I give up. I can share this with them, and you know what they would just be irritated and annoyed by me if I did. 🤷‍♀️
@MoMountainMutts
@MoMountainMutts Жыл бұрын
you can absolutely claim your space and not allow them to jump and climb on you, barking you cant help tho ...the dog should get over it after you come in. I would ask to give treats...wait for calm behavior. If they are fear barking treats can help warm them up. If the dog is over excited just ignore it, be boring. Over time, if you visit this friend often, the dog will get used you and the pattern. sounds like the dog could be reactive, let me tell you it is NOT easy to live with or train a reactive dog day in and day out. you might think its simple from the outside but reactivity can be very complicated. Lack of socializing really does a number on a puppy can it can take YEARS to rehab a dog like that. I am glad your friend is at least getting the dog out. Many owners with dogs like that stop taking them out and it gets worse. If your so confident why not take one of the two dogs and work it on the trail with your friend? having a reactive dog can be embarrassing and over whelming for people and they can get VERY defensive about it. I find that once the owner believes and sees that the dog is capable they can move forward. I Lets say you meet up once or twice a week and go for a walk together, you bond w the reactive dog and start to work it, let the friend see their dogs potential. Or like you said, give it up, its not your monkey... your not a dog trainer im assuming. Sometimes though, you can help your friends IF they want the help. Depends in the friend, some may see that as crossing their boundaries.

I have an issue with my dog. I have been able to teach him to be calm when I'm about to let him run outside, but he just goes away and ignores to come back when he sees something interesting. He then doesn't come back even if he isn't far away because he seems to think if you don't see him he doesn't have to come. I have to go looking for him and when he sees I found him he does come back but keeps his distance so I cannot tie him again. I then get a hold of him and I do leave him tied for a long time, but I have done it so many times already and he still doesn't seem to get that if he runs away he doesn't get to run at all...He has this same issue with potty training. He never keeps in if he wants to go and sees no one is watching him. Im quite frustrated because I have an old dog who never caused this many issues and even with his medical problems he is able to keep in before going outside and has an outstanding recall. He also has some agressive issues with high value foods, and I have not been able to get that out of him either. I'm really surprised because my senior dog never had even growled at me, or bitten me. Yet this other one has already bitten several people because of over excitement.

I think thats fine as long as the person is asking for it, dogs just shoulder smashing/nut shots/bulldozing/being a fur missal not on cue is not cool. Grandma doesnt want a broken hip, baby doesnt want to be trampled. Spatial awareness is key. Ekko hugs me all the time, all three of mine jump, I also enjoy it.

1:05 When Leica is ignoring you as you command "up up up," it's time to step back and give her the "Look!" command. That's how we learned it in traning. Until you have them looking at you, they're not in the mode of even registering the command. So the sequence would be, "[Name] ... Look!" ** give reward **. "[Name] Up!" ** give reward.

she isnt trained with that. all the dogs have different skills. she absolutely knows to get in her seat, i dont personally use the look command for this

My gf asked me to take her dog and train her. I said I can only train your dog to behave well around me.

It can work if you both are consistent with the cues and how you follow through. i train dogs for people and as long as they use the same training it works

@@matthewbrightman3398 well i trained all three of our dogs and if Lee uses the cues they listen to him, when he doesn't then they take the opportunity when its available. Board and trains work really well for some dogs and not others, depends if the owner can follow through and use the training the dog has learned from a handler.

@@MoMountainMutts that’s awesome! It is really nice to create that bond with a dog that comes with training.

Had you let him out excited Mina and the pack would've straightened him out in a paternal doggy manner of course.
