Batman Begins is the Batman film to finally get it right. An underrated entry of The Dark Knight Trilogy and a film that is strictly a Bruce Wayne/Batman film. This film really started something after the character was gone for many years on film. Even though a trilogy was not planned the Nolan films work so well together.

its my favourite one. and fav comic book movie, other than the animated The Dark Knight Return Deluxe Edition. when i first saw Batman Begins, i hated it because it not close to the comics at all with ra's training him and wanting to kill joe chill and all that, but all the liberties they take really work.

Batman Begins is underrated IMO. When I rewatch the Nolan movies one thing that strikes me is how little they have aged. This movie came out in 2005 and has barely aged a day.....

This is and will always be my favorite Batman movie of all time and Christian Bale will always be my favorite Batman of all time. My favorite scene in the movie is the chase scene through Gathom. I love how the Batmobile roars like a lion while driving, that scene is so epic! The movie always reminds me of the 2004 The Batman series.

This is the start of the greatest comicbook Trilogy. And despite it being a more grounded and realistic interpretation, I think it follows the comics. Throughout all three movies, Nolan clearly took inspiration and influence from various storylines like No Man's Land, Dark Victory, Knightfall, Long Halloween, etc. I also love Liam Neeson as Ra's Al Ghul and Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow.

So cool how the movie does a realistic version of The Lazarus Pit, with Ra's "death" and "resurrection" in the film! Then we get an actual, metaphorical, and realistic version in The Dark Knight Rises. The League of Shadows is also a far better name than The League of Assassins for any adaptation of the group, I'd say - A suitably subtle, elegant, and understatedly deadly name to encompass the conversely unsubtle name and power of, The League of Assassins.

I was working at a theater when this came out and I got to screen it a couple of days early. I remember liking it but kind of being on the fence. Saw it again a few days later and not only is it my favorite Batman movie by a long shot it’s in my top 3 all time.

Almost the same here. I remember I saw Begins not long after it came out and it was just... eh, didn't really care. Forgot about it for a while and then the hype for Dark Knight was so huge that I decided to go back and rewatch it, I was utterly engrossed, loved it. Definitely my No.1 Batman film.

It’s crazy how similar yet different this is from the later 2 sequels. It definitely has more levity than the other 2, it has more of a stylistic atmosphere, and Bale’s Batman voice is toned down

Anyone who says Bale isn’t a good Bruce Wayne/Batman doesn’t really know the character. He’s the goat and it isn’t even close. I remember when Bale was first cast, I didn’t know who he was. Then I watched Equilibrium and I saw it immediately. Even more than everyone who came before. This guy is Bruce Wayne. Heading into the summer of 2005 I was so excited. It was senior year of HS, College was around the corner but it was Batman I was most excited for. And boy did the movie not disappoint. It was the first great Batman movie. It captured him perfectly. The voice was straight out the comics. “A hoarse whisper.” Fox. Alfred. Rhas. Ducard. His family having ties to abolitionists. Low key taking control of his company. The play boy antics. It was all comics with some cinematic changes. And there’s Gordon. They finally did him right. Alfred was given so much more to do. The Batmobile. The chase scene is fantastic. Batman with the sonar and the bats, straight out of Frank Millers Batman Year One. It’s blasphemy how this movie has gotten overlooked. It changed everything for Batman cinematically and really ushered in the era of great comic book films. Before Cap and Mjolnir, there was conversation between Batman and Gordon and a calling card. “I never got the chance to thank you.” “And you’ll never have to.” Glides off rooftop. Title Card. Goddamn EPIC.

I always thought this movie was great but it took a little growing up to really appreciate it. Now I get emotional in certain parts where I didn't really before. It seriously gets better the more times you watch it. definitely my favorite comic book movie. I don't know what it is. Obviously the direction and all the other departments are great but I think it all comes down to Nolan's choice of how to tell the story, in his now typical non-linear narrative style. It allows the pace to be nonstop. The opening with the music just immediately sucks me in, no matter how many times I see the first few minutes.

I loved that statement! Jack Gleeson could've been treated as this hidden figure that looks nothing like Joffrey, and it's a somewhat mind-blowing revelation that it's him, even if this take is just to spare Winston's feelings - but Coy just laid down the really, obvious truth. He clearly has the face of a child version of Joffrey. Obviously, he's a lot nicer, of course. If Batman knew the truth, things would've gone a lot differently in the third act.

I grew up watching the Adam West series, TAS, and i probably watched Batman '89 more than 50 times (i would say i watched Returns that much, but let's be honest, i was only watching Michelle Pfeiffer) but Batman Begins blew my mindhole and i still like it right up there with The Dark Knight. There are nitpicks here and there, many of which carry through the sequels, like the absolutely awful dialogue of the maintenance people at the end (we GET it! The pipes bursting are bad, thanks for stating the obvious five times), the action choreography, and i never got on board with the tankmobile or Bale's bat voice. However, i do love his delivery of the "SWEAR TO ME!" line. Bale is just so naturally gifted as an actor and this cast is top notch in general. I have to say, i prefer Holmes to Gyllenhall but not by much. I don't really dig Rachel as a character. Agree with Kristian, this is definitely Neeson in top form. The real standout here though is Cillian Murphy. I genuinely think his performance as Scarecrow was as pitch perfect as Ledger's and Hopkins as Lector. It's always good to see Tom Wilkinson as well, as i am a sucker for Eternal Sunshine and Shakespeare in Love. I could fawn over this movie all day. This was peak Nolan. He made so many great films between Memento and The Dark Knight, i can still say he is one of the all time great directors, even if everything after TDK was meh (mostly because the man needs to stay away from the sound editing, yeesh). Bring on TDK in review! Thanks again for this great team. I could watch the three of y'all chat about nerd stuff for days

I just love this movie. It's kinda become underrated, due to the massive success of "The Dark Knight".... but "Batman Begins" is a solid Batman movie in its own right, finally putting more focus on Bruce Wayne's psyche and how he approaches being Batman. While he might not be the "best" Batman, or one fans think of as comic-accurate, I do appreciate Bale's version in that of all the different live-action Batmen we've gotten, he feels like a fully rounded, fleshed-out character. And no, his raspy voice never really bothered me. Odd choice, sure... but honestly, I'd probably be more scared of a Batman who screams with a raspy voice, than a guy talking with a sexy whisper lol. Even though this movie has this very sobering, grounded approach, to me it oddly feels like the most "comic book-y" of Nolan's Trilogy, which isn't a bad thing at all. I appreciate Nolan treating each entry in the trilogy as almost different genres, with "Begins" being this character study, "Dark Knight" being a crime drama, and "Rises" being a disaster movie. Wicked start to a great trilogy, IMO. While "The Dark Knight" is easily still my favorite Batman movie, expanding and elevating everything we think we know about the character and his fight for Gotham, "Begins" really lays the groundwork perfectly; so from this point on, we know what's at stake, and why Bruce is so committed to affecting change in Gotham. Looking forward to y'all rewatching this era.

Wow the bias against the Raimi movies are strong lol. Regardless of how you guys feel about Spiderman 2, it was also highly regarded by fans and critics. It has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Batman Begins was revolutionary for sure, but y'all are acting like Begins was the first critically acclaimed comic book movie to exist. Marvel movies started to drown with X-Men Last Stand, but at the point that Begins came out, there was an undeniable high coming off of Spiderman 2 the previous summer. All other analysis is spot on from this video. Just really bothers me when you guys disregard the critical impact of Spiderman 2. Y'all can not like the movie but if you're gonna bring up Rotten Tomato scores and talk about critics finally taking comic book movies seriously, you can't ignore the first 2 Spiderman movies (and in that regard, Spiderman 1 is also no slouch with a 90% rating).

I think many people definitely loved the realism without camp, and the strong character focus on Bruce Wayne, which is a first for these films. The Burton ones focused more on the villains, and the Schumacher ones were fast-paced cartoons, going from scene to scene too quickly to provide any strong, weighty character focus. Previously, Roger Ebert thought Superman, Superman II, and Spider-Man 2 and The Incredibles were the only great superhero films. This was then added to the prestigious collection.

I disagree with Coy about Katie and Maggie. The love interest angle is way more important than the DA work. I see the Rachel character as the love interest. Katie works better as the love interest. Begins has her doing a ton of DA work which plays a part in the plot. Maggie works better as the Assistant DA but the Dark Knight focus more on the love angle, so Katie not being there was jarring.

This movie is #2 on my list of batman movies even tho I'm a huge marvel fan. This movie is the one that made superhero/comic book movies seriously good and without this movie we wouldn't have the MCU, WB realized that they needed to give batman a new start after that garbage batman and robin shit they pulled out of their asses. The way Nolan directed this movie was amazing he brought the darker side of batman which fans wanted from the comics and it delivered very well. They not only gave batman redemption they gave him a respectful trilogy and just a great movie. This is when WB, and DC made the character dark and not goofy they made batman very serious. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the scarecrow they wasted that character in my opinion, Christain Bale was the great casting for batman, and Michael Cane as Alfred was also great casting the chemistry those two bring in this movie was fantastic. I really think they just threw in Morgan Freeman just to be in there because he's just a great actor Kaite Holmes was ok in this movie it didn't add much neither did Liam Neeson. The score is absolutely stunning it felt like being in different crime scenes and made the movie a suspense spy movie with lots of action. The way they did this movie felt like the true dark batman from the comics that fans have been asking for and they made batman a spy in the shadows. I have to say being a true marvel fan I really liked this movie I haven't watched this movie since I was a freshman in high school. I can't wait to hear what you guys think about this movie, hope you all have a great weekend🦇🦇✅✅ I wish I knew why it took WB & DC so long to make a good batman movie?

The theatrical trailer for Batman Begins was so freaking bad. It kind of illustrates just how fantastically well done the pacing is in the movie, that you lose everything by using some generic trailer music and chopping scenes up in a really haphazard way. The fact it made 48 million opening weekend is a minor miracle. Also: thanks youtube for popping this in my feed.

Hey Kristian, have you noticed what Christian Bale does not just with the Batman voice but Bruce Wayne's voice in Batman Begins. I think in his performance, he made Bruce sound a little gruff and aggressive at times, as if he has yet to seperate his aggressive/animalistic Batman side from his playboy/carefree public Bruce Wayne side. And when you get to rewatching The Dark Knight and Rises, Bale makes Bruce's voice sound softer, to perhaps illustrate that he has now separated his two personas. I dont think many people of have picked up on the subtle changes that Bale brought to Bruce's voice, I think it shows how great and thoughtful that Bale is as an actor.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are the pinnacle of Batman to me, such a stellar cast and great writing throughout. Something I noticed watching it this time around, young Bruce gets traumatised by bats attacking him so his dad goes "let's take him to an opera with men in scary bat costumes". Like of course he's gonna get scared, that's on you Thomas. Also the action in this film isn't the greatest, lots of close-up, quick cuts that make the fights hard to follow.

The performances from the actors and the writing is very good and heath gives a true chilling performance. Bale is underrated as Batman especially on the second one. I just find Begins is more of a rewatch movie than Dark Night.

When That guy at party says to Bruce, the Apple has fallen very far from the tree....you could see how hard that hit Bruce... Bruce is starting to understand, its his families legacy, and he is just shittng all over it.. Yes, you can be Batman, but you have to start taking Bruce Wayne more seriously...

I recently watched Batman begins as well, that shit still fuckin slaps real hard. It’s so damn good, and I’ve already seen it four times. It’s just such a serious, earnest take on the Batman origin. Serious Batman year one vibes.

The voice gets me everytime and ruins what could be a great trilogy for me. The Cowl isn't my favorite either but all that aside I recall Begins being my fave of the trilogy. I'm due for a rewatch. As a kid born in '88 I base everything off the animated series, to an extent the 66 series played a part in my Batman understanding as well as Returns lol but the animated series set my baseline in stone. Everything is held to that standard for me

You're not far off on Katie Holmes not being in the sequel because of Tom Cruise. I think this came out after "Thank You for Smoking" and if that is the case it is sad that "Batman Begins" was the last good movie Katie Holmes before Cruise ruined her career.

The relationship between Bruce and Rachael is what brings this entire series down. It does not fit the character of Batman at all. The fact that by the second movie they have Batman wanting to quit being Batman is so out of character. I really wish they had used some other element to add drama.

Super happy that Winston immediately pointed out that the entire movie is based on a "theme" / that it's dealing with one big topic: Fear. This gives a lot of context for the following movies as they are based around themes as well (chaos / anarchy). (This at least hints at the idea that there might be *some* connecting tissue in Dark Knight Rises :P ) Loved the episode as always. I totally agree that it was important they turned the city of Gotham into a character. I agree with all your assessments about the various actors and what they brought to their roles. So excellent breakdown and enjoyed the conversation a lot.

Ok after Batman and Robin I was kinda done with Batman, Keaton was my guy or at least the guy I grew up with and Forever and Batman and Robin did`nt land with me. I remember back in the day Aint it cool news was the place where I`d go for my movie news and I remember the casting announcement for Batman and everyone wanting Guy Pierce due to his work on Memento with Nolan but when Bails named dropped I was like "YES!" I had seen him in American Psycho and it was an intent yes as I could see what he`d bring to the role. (And Boy did he deliver) Outside of that I say the set pics and was put of as that said Ken Watanabe was Ras Al Gul and tbf I was familiar with the character from The Animated series and just could not see it Liam Neeson As Ducard I was like who? (Thinking to myself He`d make a MUCH better Ras! Personally back then I wanted Connery) Then there was Michael Cain as Alfred and I was like FUCK NO! and I totally hated on the Batmobile when the first pictures hit the web (Burtonvese and The Animated Series was my go to ones) I was working Projection at Vue Cinemas in Harrow my hometown at the time and I had the day off the day the print arrived. My Friend Ken who was manager at the time (He Does the Creative Control Podcast with me check us out) He`s a huge Batman fan, The moment that print came in he made sure it was ready to view for the managers that night. Next day I go in and Ken says there will be a staff show for Batman Begins (This is 3 days before UK release) I`m disintrested but Curious about Bale as the Caped Crusader. I Ask How was Bale Ken Replys The Best Since Keaton I said Hows the movie he say it`s the Best batman film ever made. I`m like get the fuck outta here. That Night I sit down and watch god dam was I blown away, Falling in love with Micheal Cains Alfred, Falling in love with the Tumbler and Liam Nesson Being Ras Blew me away! But the Line "I Won`t Kill you I just Don`t have to save you" WHAT A FUCKING LINE! I cheered fuck my screen cheered, we are brits that dosent happen often. It is an understatement to say that this film blew my mind I hold it as the best Batman film ever made (I Love the Dark Knight but I see that as one of the best Crime Thrillers ever made as it`s basically up there with Heat) I`ve seen this film over 30 time it`s hand down The GOAT!

Did any of you guys read or watch Batman Year One? Many of the beats of this movie are taken from that graphic novel. Batman and Gordon's relationship minus Gordon being there after Waynes are killed, Batman using bats to get away from the cops, Gordon going against corruption, Gordon's partner Flass and the ending with the hint at the Joker except that Batman hadn't showed up yet. He was ABOUT to show up. There's no Raj Al Ghul or love interest. Actually Harvey Dent is already D.A. in the comic.

The Dark Knight ultimately won the summer of 2008 due to the hype over Ledger's performance and it coming out right in the peak of summer, but Iron Man generated a lot of buzz in its own right. I remember seeing Iron Man and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on the same day, and thinking that a major changing of the guard was occurring in the movie industry. Indy 4 felt tired and outdated, while Iron Man was bristling with modern energy.

I still disagree with Nolan not including Heath's Joker at all in TDKR. Heath's performance was so iconic, I think the most honorable thing to do is not to ignore him, but to make his presence felt in the final film...I think he should have been overtly mentioned by Gordon and also seen. Surely there was outtake footage that could have been used. Show Bruce early in TDKR sitting alone broken down at his kitchen table, then he looks up and across the table is Joker laughing at him, it's a different angle on their interrogation scene in TDK. And then have Batman have to take out a gang of Joker acolytes all dressed like clowns and inspired by him in the chaotic street fight ending in TDKR.
