Oh yes! The Wizard of Oz is on the Schedule for this month :) and I am not sure which month to put sci-if month in! I have all of the month for this year filled, so I may either wait for next year, or I may do half horror have sci-fi for the month of October (like on Wednesday we watch a horror film and on Saturday we watch a sci-fi) I don’t know, what do you think?
@GrouchyMarx
@GrouchyMarx 3 жыл бұрын
@@MoviesWithMia Do both. Have this October split half and half like you said, and dedicate a whole month next year for Sci-Fi alone, because that would fill a month too. Plenty of material to work with on both! Have you seen the old Wizard of Oz or know anything at all about it, like seen clips or still shots from it? Oh and for October consider putting the sci-fi's in the first half, and the horror more scary Halloween types in the last weeks leading up to the 31st. But it's your call as you know what you've got to deal with doing it all. However you do it I'll be ready to watch them!

From what I’ve read, Mary Martin, who played Maria on Broadway, had commissioned the show to be written by Lindsey & Crouse. It was originally envisioned as a play with traditional folk songs that the Trapp family had actually sung. Mary Martin approached Rodgers & Hammerstein to contribute one original song. R & H offered to write a complete score.

Such a great film. Great production values, cast, songs, and cinematography. The first time I saw this film was in a re-release in the mid-1970's. My family was living in the Midwest at the time, and it was the month of May. We were nearing the end of the film, when they meet Rolfe in the graveyard. We heard air-raid sirens and thought it was an alarm being sounded in the village for the escaped Von Trapp family. They were very loud. "What convincing sound effects!" I remember thinking to myself. Suddenly, the theatre lights came on, and the manager ran down the aisle next to us announcing in a shaky but calm voice that there was a tornado on the ground less than a mile away, and we all had to get out of the theatre and seek shelter, now! So we fled like the Von Trapp family and finally got safely home, even though the power to the city shut off when we were halfway to our house (and basement). For extra fun, we had to negotiate through intersections with no power to the streetlights or stoplights, and people passing us going 75mph on a 2 lane road in a residential neighborhood Kind of more drama than we had planned for, but in retrospect it really a memorable night out! It was like Mother Nature showed up to present her accompanying performance art piece. Since there were no VCR's yet, I had to wait several years to see the actual ending of the film.

You are simply a wonderful commentator. Enhanced some things you brought to my attention..eg. a long delay of why Maria gazing at the nuns and her Reverend Mother with gratitude as they are looking through the wrought iron gate [ hey come to think about it she fastened a gaze through the Von Trapp Estate's wrought iron gate pondering what life of hers will take place there]. Yes, before she walked down the aisle she is aware happily of a different new life ,.new chapter, to be fulfilled to be a natural mom, to marry her love and be accepted by his seven children.

In actuality the Von Trapp singers were a famous singing troop long before Maria came into their lives, and the original mother was a member of the group. Also Maria was not a governess. Even though she had entered the Abby to become a nun, she also had a teaching degree. She was brought in to teach one of the daughters who had become ill, and had to be home schooled. BTW, most of my information is from googling about them one afternoon when I was bored. So I am not 100% sure how accurate it is. 🤗

Eventually they did fall in love in real life. But in reality they got married because of her love of the children, and he thought she would make a good mother. Also, there wasn’t any great escape, they had permission to leave to travel to the US to go on tour. They just never came back to Salzburg. Although they did hate the Nazis, and that is the reason they left. I think most of the night shots were Day to night shots.

When you talk about the music being reused it made me notice how "the hills are alive" is being used when Maria and Georg are confessing and how it sort of suggests how the captain loves her for her true self. It's not the Waltz, its Maria being herself.

also also!! whenever “the sound of music” motif is used, it almost feels indicative of home or homecoming. maria sings it on the untersberg, where she grew up and what she considers “her” mountain, and the children sing it when their father finally comes back to them. so in a way, it’s both of them finding their home in each other 🥹

Both the play and film of "The Sound of Music" were inspired by the German movie "The Trapp Family" from 1956. It's a fine film, full of romance and humor, in color and laced with lots of folk songs and religious music, for which that musical family was famous. It's also slightly more realistic that TSoM. Funny that nobody appears to have seen it.

Loved the review! I saw this as a child and I remember how the beginning was joyful and funny, then it descended to fear and anxiety. I was so scared when they hid behind the tombs and Rolf betrays them. Now when I think about it, if the nuns had actually messed with the engines of their cars, they would have lined them up and shot them. ☹️ That’s how ruthless they were. I noticed that your nails matched the color of Maria’s dress when she came back to the family, joining the children in song! 😁

@@MoviesWithMia his acting improved with age. Not to say the acting in Sound of Music was bad, but it was clear they did several takes, everyone was tired, and needed to get the shoot finished. But that was 60's Hollywood. Nowadays, you can take as much time as you need, and Plummer as an old man, with less worries and more money makes him more relaxed, more natural. His character was coincidentally also a wealthy man with little worries and enjoyed a life of leisure. So when he interacted with De Amas their scenes were so fluid, I could totally believe they were good friends and he cared about her more than his own family.

Another great re-reaction, Mia! I must confess, this is a film that I developed a deeper appreciation for over time. Back in the day, this was a family favorite that my sister and cousins huddled around the tv every year to watch. But as a rusty butt boy, I was more into kung fu movies and horror flicks so musicals like these were not yet my cup of tea. But as I grew older and had a chance to catch up with classic musicals, I fell in love with films like West Side Story, Top Hat, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, etc. (Cabaret is another hall-of-famer, probably my all-time favorite, another film set against the backdrop of the growing occupation of Nazi Germany). The Sound of Music is indeed breathtaking to look at, shot in the prestige format of 70mm. I’m glad you made mention of the visual splendor of it all. When this was eventually released on Blu-ray, I was gobsmacked by every element of the beautiful cinematography (lighting, framing, color, etc.). The scenery is to die for, the score by Rodgers and Hammerstein is iconic, and the cast is scrumptious (the chemistry between Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer is, well, one of my favorite things - sorry. 🙃 Btw, love the shout out to George Michael, lol). On a different note, I noticed some comments offering suggestions for classic horror films for the fall (shout out to @Grouchy Marx). All excellent suggestions. My humble two cents would be to perhaps start out by focusing on older b&w titles from the 30’s and 40’s to give you a flavor of what made audiences pulses quicken at the same time that Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant were causing them to swoon. Which is why I have to concentrate on championing just one film. Everyone else can have their pick of the litter but for me, this is the one. It was utterly groundbreaking at the time. It is iconic. Its title is practically synonymous with the horror genre itself. It is Frankenstein (1931). What Singin’ in the Rain (1952) is to musicals, what Bringing Up Baby (1938) is to screwball comedies, and (fast-forward) what Saving Private Ryan (1998) is to war films, Frankenstein is to classic horror. Never mind the fact that it is one of my most cherished films and as an 8 year old, I did a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Jimmy Stewart-like filibuster to explain to my parents why I should be allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch it. And never mind that it is richly atmospheric, and still haunting to this day (though on a more subtle level to modern audiences). It’s a more sophisticated take on the themes of life and death that most other horror films don’t even aspire to. And while often imitated and parodied since, at the time of it’s original release it was utterly fresh and original and no one had ever witnessed anything like it before. It was a groundbreaker on so many levels - production, set design, cinematography, make-up effects - influencing everything that came afterwards. And Boris Karloff’s take as the creature is iconic as well and still tugs at the heartstrings; it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as other performances by other greats, including Brando and De Niro. But never mind all of that: the main reason I’m recommending it - and also it’s sequel Bride of Frankenstein (1935), which is even better if you can believe it - is because I think you, in particular, would love it and it would make for a fantastic reaction for your channel. The film is absorbing, philosophical, only mildly shocking by today’s standards but still extremely dramatic, heartbreaking, and just a great ol’ time at the movies period. Love the channel as always. Keep up the great work and keep on keepin’ on. 😊

Serendipity is a wonderful thing. As you pointed out, the necessity of killing the bright lights for the 'Something Good' sequence actually made it better. It's like the clocks in 'High Noon'. It's been a long time since I saw this, and i noticed a music cue that I don't think I have before. When the Nazis pull up outside the convent, we hear 'So Long, Farewell' in a minor key, which really heightens the tension that has already been raised by the constrained feel of the songs performed at the Festival. Thank you for including one of my favorite bits, that of the nuns stealing the magneto and other bits from the Nazis' cars.

Another excellent video reaction.. Yours are always right on the mark. I would like to recommend a new movie for you. and see your reaction to it. It's Judy Garland's " A Star Is Born". One of the most talked about movies of all time. The only movie ever to have it's premier on live tv. It opened with excellent reviews and crowds. Warner Brothers was making money hand over fist, but they thought if they shortened it, they could make more. They cut 3o min. and got a extra show per day. The movie then didn't make sense. The movie died. Judy was nominated for a Oscar, but lost to Grace Kelly. This loss is still debated today. In the 1980's , they found the cut footage and restored it and it had premier's all over the world to sell out audiences. NY Times said that Judy's performance was the greatest one woman show of all time.There has been so many books written about this movie and after watching your reaction, would love to have your take on it.

You remember in the opening titles the screen that says, "With partial use of ideas by Georg Hurdalek"? Well, Georg Hurdalek was the producer of a little-known film about the Von Trapp family. It was that movie that prompted Mary Martin to make a play with music for her to star in. So, Lindsey and Crouse LEAGALLY based their play on the early movie, not Maria Von Trapp's memoirs. Another fan has noted that Rodgers and Hammerstein were originally asked only to provide a couple of sings and it grew into the stage musical that this film is based on. Consequently, for al the millions of dollars this movie made, the Von Trapps actually received almost nothing. On another subject: the SOUND! It was glorious! There was the feeling that there was a full orchestra just behind the screen, with every instrument being fully present (including the double-pianos during the "My Favorite Things" montage leading up to the "Do-Re-Mi" sequence.) I don't know if the DVD can do justice to that wonderful SOUND of music!

I think one of the reasons this movie never landed with me before is how unsympathetic the father's character was (to be fair, I haven't watched it since I was a child growing up with an extremely authoritarian father myself, so that would be what stuck with me). But now after seeing your review, I can appreciate the other aspects of it, as well as the father's transformation (character transformation always makes for good drama), and will probably watch the whole thing again. That's the third time you've made me reconsider films that I was always kind of "meh" about (the others were Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and West Side Story). @@MoviesWithMia Actually, the family was upset with the portrayal of the father. In real life he was the nice guy and Maria was the hardass. Maria was a little eccentric and hard driving and was difficult when dealing with the kid's adult relationships. She wanted to keep the family (and group) together and marriages would detract from that. IIRC one daughter didn't marry and regretted it for much of her life. Fact check me on that last sentence I'm going from memory there.

Don't be too hard on the Baroness. With multiple viewings it becomes obvious that she has been in love with the Captain, for a while, with him not reciprocating. For a much worst film, may I suggest "A Change Of Habit". It stars Mary Tyler Moore and Elvis Presley. Moore plays a nun who helps Presley, a doctor who has a practice in the ghetto (this is the first time Presley sang the song "In The Ghetto", the only good thing to come from this train wreck). The ending is ambiguous but it looks like Moore is leaning towards breaking her vows and going with the man from Memphis.

A slight exaggeration about Austria's reaction to the unification with Germany. Austria and Germany were wanting to unite since the end of the first World War, 20 years previously. Hardly anyone in Austria objected to the Anschluss. "The Sound of Music" was banned for many years in Austria, because of the historical inaccuracies.

It's easier to know who is the bad guy when you have the hindsight. Almost no one at the time predicted Hitler would have been a problem, but now anything involving Nazis in modern media is shown that people hated him from the start, which makes no sense. He had followers, not all were evil. But in movies, it's portrayed as if everyone was a fortune teller and knew exactly what would happen. We have the privilege of being able to look back.

Not only were the first names of the children not used, but the elder child was actually a male. The part of the film that the actual Von Trapp children didn’t like was how the father was portrayed as being cold towards the children after his wife’s death. They claim that he was always a loving father, and that the mother’s death didn’t effect his attitude towards them.

I have a couple of old film suggestions if you don’t mind, I know I’m seriously late to the party and I apologize but I’m thinking either freaks from 1932 or the miracle worker from 1962 which honestly you might wanna go with the mirror, coworker over freaks, mainly because freaks is hard to find. I should know I have looked And the miracle worker is really well acted. It’s Scott and Bancroft is and Sullivan and Patty Duke as Helen Keller, and was really interesting about that is when Sullivan excuse me good grief sorry when Ann Bancroft was brought onto the movie version of the miracle worker she had just finished doing the play of the miracle worker where she had played and Sullivan and Patty Duke had played Helen Keller and she told him she said look I won’t reprise my role as Anne Sullivan, unless You let Patty reprise her role as Helen, which was very interesting because I think Patty was about 13 or 14 at the time and she would’ve been playing a seven or eight year-old Helen, but they both ended up winning actress Oscars for it so I just thought that would be something if you would be interested in looking at it.

Mansplaining? In what way?
@altaclipper
@altaclipper 2 жыл бұрын
@@MoviesWithMia Sometimes you’re giving information that should be self-evident, at least to anyone actually watching a reaction of this particular movie. I mean, I don’t think this crowd needs to hear about the symbolism of the nuns behind the gate at the wedding when in fact, being nuns in an abbey, they would probably not have participated in a wedding regardless. And one thing that bothers me in every reaction on KZbin, not just you, is to bring a narrow, parochial judgement to things that are perfectly normal in the context of the times being portrayed. When the subject of boarding school came up, you wondered that the baroness just didn’t seem interested in raising and bonding with the children when, throughout a lot of history, parents of a certain class were expected to not raise their own children. It doesn’t seem so long ago when Princess Diana made headlines and attracted a huge amount of hate for being a hands-on parent to her children and breaking with hundreds of years of tradition. Times change. The only thing we can say for sure is that in a hundred years, people will think we were backward and misguided in the way we do things. I’m not criticizing you and I love a lot of the films that you love, but modern observations of historical actions have to be understood in their own context, not ours. I’ll just add that Norma Desmond is my favourite character in film, and I love that you loved “Sunset Boulevard”.
@MoviesWithMia
@MoviesWithMia 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your observation 😁 I don’t mean to come off as mansplaining. Those moments of explanation are not meant for viewers who understand the context of a film, rather the viewers who aren’t quite familiar with the customs of the past. I also have the perspective of a young person looking at a society that has long since changed, so, as much as I try to view these films with a unbiased perspective, slivers of my generational biases may show up occasionally 😅 that is why I rely on seasoned viewers who have context of the world as it was to guide me through what the mindset or customs may have been. I truly thank you for addressing this because I want to make sure that I am not doing a disservice to these classics by judging them with my 2022 perspective. And thank you so much for watching!! P.S. I think Norma Desmond is one of the most fascinating character studies in film! She would be a fun character to dissect in a film studies class!!
@altaclipper

@@MoviesWithMia I grew up watching Carol Burnett and she played a character based on Norma Desmond, so I was familiar with a parody version of her as a child. The first time I saw the movie, Gloria Swanson’s performance changed my life. But if we’re approaching historical stories, we need to apply historical context, otherwise, you might have a real problem with stories about Henry VIII or Richard III or Julius Caesar or any number of historical figures whose morality was less Christian-based than ours. Respectfully, et cetera.
