rewildyoursoul...
Hello my Friends!
In this whole new handpan realm, we have hundreds of options to choose from.Even 5 years ago, the selection was far smaller and relegated to the large, well known makers, and a few smaller ones.
Today, many people have taken up the hammer and started crafting quality instruments.With this shift in availability, I think it is important for people to make an informed choice.
There are many many parameters to consider when purchasing your first instrument, so knowing some of the traits to look for, will allow you to chose an instrument/sound sculpture that suits your style and musical desires.
These are MY opinions and experience owning and playing for many makers over the years, so you may have different beliefs.We are thankfully in a time where some"smaller" and larger ones makers are creating high quality instruments, at reasonable prices.
This video is not an advertisement for any maker in particular, and is not intended to influence in that direction. The handpans used are ones I own or have access to , and illustrate some or all of the traits i enjoy in an instrument.
Armed with the tools given here, you can begin to search for an instrument with a bit more clarity.
Not addressed in this video are scales. A topic for future discussion! ;)
These traits are NOT all necessary for you to be satisfied and to find a quality instrument, however, a combination of them, will help lead you towards a quality instrument.
Add your own tips below! :)
Hope you find this helpful and remember,

Hi this may seem like a silly question but the first two pans being in a custom scale , may I please ask the note line up for both? I am incredibly interested in both of these tunings , after seeing this video it is going to make it very hard to settle for anything less. Undoubtedly that’s not how it works as a creative being. Each instrument, no matter how similar they are, just like a guitar there are many many different models... it’s the instrument that tells you what will be played by the energy you receive as soon as you place it next to your body. Besides, would have been boring to hear the same song for almost the entire length of the video. Great hat by the way brother 🙏🏼💜🇨🇦

I'm currently thinking about the Sela harmony d kurd stainless steel handpan. I'm looking for an emotional, somewhat melancholic, deep, rich, long lasting tones. (Maybe Asian influenced sound). Am I on the right track with the D Kurd? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I want to pick the right one to share with my dad who has alzeimers before he forgets too much. He's still an amazing drummer and we both really love the resonating sounds of handpans. 🩶

Do you have any suggestions for a budget of $100, I've seen how diverse the market can get with prices going from $75 all the way to $10,000, are the super cheap ones most likely scams or just bad quality? And do you think that they would be good for someone who wants to get into handpans for the first time?

Most of the time, tongue drums in that range could be a great place to start, but will not be performance quality. Amazing tongue drums are beautiful in their own way, but designed more for personal use. You will love whichever you get!

Hey there! The makers are pinned in the top comment for all of these instruments. All the makers can be found on Instagram or Facebook as well. Stores/ resellers typically cost more and are inferior quality instruments, so I can advise against thonan, etc for ordering. In the EU, Godan handpan, shellopan, Sonido de Mano, are all great makers. There are quite a few! Also the swap and sale page for handpan on Facebook is a good place to look! Let me know if I change help at all 🎶🔑

@ReWildYourSoul

Hey! I have tried quite a few. They are rebranded a StarHandpans from China, can be a bit inconsistent. Fir the price, you could find much better/ and or consistent quality in the makers I showed here or in the Facebook swap and sale handpan page. There are some great Sela handpans, but it just the consistency of quality that is the issue. They are quite similar to the nova pan showed in this video. If you do go the Sela route, definitely do not buy a floor model from guitar center, as these are often completely knocked out of tune by people trying to play it there. I have seen many a sad handpan on the sales floor there. Feel free to send me an email if you have and other questions or are looking for more quality makers! Rewildyoursoulmusic @ gmail . Com

440 hz is my Preference. 432 is means not being able to play with others in 440, sounding out of tune to those with perfect pitch, and really not contributing much to the experience of the user. That said, if you like the sound of 432, go for it! 🙏🎶

Hey! Blooms are common on stainless, but not quite as audible on most nitrided. There are quite a few stainless instrument that lack the brightness of the handpan, but maintain that bloom. I have a few D Kurds currently for sale, but they are stainless. Aura, Isthmus are two of the makers in the US still using nitriding, but most makers hav me converted to stainless! @ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I find the opposite, Raw steel has a warmer less metallic tone in studio setting, and stainless is the one, for me, that needs the erratic frequencies tamed. Nitrided, in general, has too much finger noise for my taste, but this F pygmy Ravpan is perfect. This is recorded and mixed with equipment I trust, but feel free to check out my studio albums as well for a more precise representation of the sound! rewildyoursoul.hearnow.com/lunaria

@ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 2 жыл бұрын
Surprised you know those then! SPB are held in high esteem by most, I personally love them, but can be difficult to acquire. They are warm, stable and well tuned. Still being made by Victor Levinson. Sun pan, are Very unique, one of the earliest explorers of stainless steel. They come up for resale occasionally and are still made by Marty, per request. In fact, I have one on order currently. Unlike most handpans, they are much more flat in shape and are tuned with fundamental and octave, so have a different sound than most. If you are lucky enough to have access to either one, both great choices, depending on what you like. Though if you are asking about those, I feel you may already know that 😉🔑

Does the price of a pan make a difference in sound quality? I've been looking on Amazon recently to see what they have and I've found a couple that are in the price range of $500 to $600, and they look really nice, I'm just afraid that I'd buy one and end up being disappointed.. I guess what I'm asking is, do I have to spend $1000 or more to get a quality sounding pan like the ones you have featured in this video?
@ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! It does sometimes make a difference. Some of the cheaper instruments are not even in tune, so would certainly not work for music or sound healing. I think for that price range, I would go with a Rav Vast. Handpans are amazing, Ravs are also beautiful in their own way. Aura handpan in NJ is also selling instruments for a great price only slightly above what you mentioned. Hope that helped!

absolutely! :) Though, to be fair, handpans/ Rav are not really suited for covers, in general. They are notes taken from Major, Minor or Modal scales. That said, happy to take a look! Ricky

Ok, good to know! I really love the celtic sound of some of them. So that's what made me think it could be used to sort of recreate this song. It's one of my favorites from a really good book/show series, and I'd love to be able to play something like it once I can afford my first pan! But I guess it could be also used to make my own songs as well!

Hey my friend! You would pick it up pretty fast, if you have a melody/ chordal background like me! There are a few makers, Aura Handpans and Iskra Handpans, that are making instruments under 1k right now. BOth high quality. Rav vasts are a great alternative as well, ranging from 650 used to around 7-800. Durable and professional as well. Good luck on the journey my friend, and Hope you have one in your lap soon! Ricky

@ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Not really. At that price point, they are going to be out f tune and unstable. The cheapest is likely the Aura handpan around the 850 range. Also Novapan has some cheaper instruments as well. At that price e, I would go for a Rav Vast. Different than a handpan, but similar in tonal quality, plus professional quality. 🎶🙏

Thanks Ricky! I've read that handpans require quite a bit more care in handling than, let's say, a RAV Vast, and it's possible for the instrument to go out of tune if played too hard or handled improperly. While we know that the different materials affect the timbre of the sound, how do the different materials affect the overall tuning stability of the instrument? Is one more likely to remain in tune over another given the same care and playing style? A handpan is likely my next hand percussion instrument, and I want to make sure I get it right the first time. It takes too long to save for something like this to screw it up ;) Thanks for the post, take care my friend! Stay safe, healthy and happy!
@ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 4 жыл бұрын
Handpans definitely require a different care ritual than a Rav or other Tongue drums! For me, I have really never had issues with tuning. For example, RavPan from 2018 is still perfectly in tune. It all really depends on how you strike and treat the instrument. I am going to be starting a podcast soon and interviewing some makers, so that may be useful in hearing more about he process directly from them! For me, stainless is one of my favorite materials, but I am a sucker for sustain, 🤷‍♂️. I also love the sound of raw steel as we’ll so it’s a hard choice! If you find one you like and want a second opinion, be in touch 🙏

@@ReWildYourSoul Thanks Ricky, great info, I love sustain as well. Given this will be my first handpan, I think I may look for something more in the middle of the road, something that will lend itself to both slow and faster pieces. That new podcast sounds like it will be great, can't wait. I'll definitely be in touch prior to making my final decision. Thanks!

Hi Ricky, excellent video! Can you please tell me what is the allowable error in setting the note? I bought myself a RavPan D Celtic, and on the tuner I found that two notes go to + 12/15 cents (while the sound is clear, even), the rest are in order + 2/3. They have a 30 day return policy, should I return it and exchange it for another one? Thanks in advance for your reply!

The low end of the market seems to have come down to the USD $450 range. I’m expecting an Amazon delivery this afternoon. I expect it to be good enough to learn on and to satisfy my instrument collecting urge. Since I am not a performer, I don’t expect to need a high end instrument, Although I am already slightly envious of the greater range I’m seeing in some KZbin videos. The one I picked is 9 notes in a D minor Kurd tuning, not that I have any clue about the difference in Kurd vs Celtic vs whatever else is available tuning.
@ReWildYourSoul
@ReWildYourSoul 3 жыл бұрын
Hey brother! Yes the ones on amazon are sometimes tuned, but it’s really a longevity thing. Makers who are familiar with the building process can assure they stay in tune and hold their sharp well. Some of that market is ok, some meh. That said, I have tried instruments from many makers and even the “low end” ones can be nice! Regardless, you will love it! If you are in the market for lessons when it arrives, be in touch! 🙏

Hey there! The issue with masss market instruments is they are inconsistent in quality. I guess it depends on whether you want to play as a performer, or hobbyist. Some Chinese handpans I have played or been sent, are good, but not perfect. Consistency of quality is usually the issue. If you do keep it, Amazon has a return policy, feel free to send me a video through my website email and I can take a listen. Best of luck and have fun!
