This is exactly the problem though. Anyone that continuously asks you for help without trying to fix it for themselves just becomes a nuisance. IT professionals, for example, constantly get asked by friends/family to help them with their computer problems. Sure, we can help, but we don't want to be the guy that just helps friends/family with computers for free - we want to actually socialize with our friends/family instead.

I can certainly help my acquaintances with a lot of thing, even in some fields that I have no prior experience in, but I make it clear that it's not going to be free. Drilling a hole in a wall may seem trivial, but it can get ugly really fast if you don't know what you're doing. A friend of mine lost most of his tableware, including his gf's dowry, and a valuable Japanese tea set, because his father in law used screws that were too small, and also didn't drill a pilot hole in the cheap cabinet. It was made of particle board. Luckily no one was wounded this day, but it could have been much worse.

Mathias: I have compared the shaft available power of a few motors I have at hand that can use both voltages, all between one half and two horsepower, and the average power loss when operating at 120V instead of 220V is 82%... FWIW.

It's always better to go with 240v and wiring your house or shop to have an outlet is a better choice. I'm here to do this in reverse.

I have a 110 swamp cooler pump that I've repaired several times. I have a new one someone gave me that says it's 230 volts. As far as I can tell they both appear to be wired sequentially, as in one leg connects to one end of one coil the other end of the coil connects to the other coil and the other leg connects to the other end of the second coil. The only difference I'm seeing is that the 110 has a thermal fuse where the coil connects to the leg and the 230 volt pump has the thermal fuse in between the two coils. If I move one leg to where the coils connect on one side and connect the other end of the coil that was connected to that leg up to the other leg that should put it in parallel correct? I'm guessing the biggest difference is the size of the coil / winding seems to be larger on the 230 volt unit. It is a little giant cp1-230, and it runs very weak off of 110 volts as wired. Also just to mention one of the problems I keep having with the old motor is that it seems to lock up, with no power it spins freely, but as soon as you put power to it it acts like an electric break rather than a motor that attempting to stop the motor from turning. Let me know if you have any insight into why it does this. My thought was that it could be crusty debris from the swamp cooler getting sucked into the pump motor and grounding the stator to the outer casing?

I'm wondering how I can wire a voltage switch, so I could have a panel with 2 plugs, utilizing the available voltage (in the event I borrow out the tool, in this case an air compressor) i just acquired a big quincy compressor pump with a 3hp baldor. I can wire it 3 ways, 110, 208, or 230. I would like to have the option to flip a switch and use either 110 or 220, depending what is available on site.

Old motor wired for 240v, no wiring diagrams for converting it to 120, nothing about it online. No. Even if you could rewire it to 220 volts, going from 60 to 50 hz with motors and transformers is a nono.

I'm no electricity expert, but it's like that in the US as well. We have 240v circuits for big appliances and 120v for typical household outlets.

Most household appliances run on 120V. You can run two 120V circuits in opposite phase together to make 240V. That's what usually done for items that use alot of power, like a saw, since 240V is lower current making it more efficient.

When I rewired my old unisaw to 120v the overload protection in the magnetic switch will always kick in after running the saw for a few minutes. I think there's a bi-metal heater element in the switch that needs to be replaced for different operating currents.

Well, in the other scene -- where you go from 120V to 240V -- what if you had just done it the _really_ easy way by merely replacing the 120V plug (in 120V wiring mode) with a 240V plug (or plugging the regular plug into a 240V source that's shaped the same way; whatever), skipping all this complication (assuming that the capacitor can handle 240V)?

Hi Mathias, im trying to build a football thrower so i will be able to get two, 240v Air conditon condensor fan motors. I've been trying to research how to wire both motors to be used at wall voltage of 120V in a parallel circuit but can't seem to figure it out because the motors have 3 wires, one for L1, L2, and one to the capacitor. Would this method be applicable to the motors? Would you have any advice?

Ah... rewiring induction motors for different voltages. Sometimes a pain in the ass. Sometimes is a cinch. I hate it when it's the motors with just a bunch of loose wires that you have to splice together. It becomes a crow's nest in there.

It looks like he's operating it with the standard household wiring in Canada. Canada and the US only use 240V in specialty high current applications: water heaters, clothes dryers, stoves, etc. You can wire 240V anywhere, but it is a higher cost, and you'd need to plan it out.

America has lots of voltages -- 120, 240, 208, 277, 480....Mexico City has 127 and 220, and some places in Canada have 347 and 600 volts!

Mellow US power is 240v for almost all residential customers. Large loads like stoves or electric clothes driers use it. Note, power is supplied with a center tap (split phase) Standard wall outlets for normal loads use this neutral (center tap) and one of the 2 hot legs depending on which side or breaker panel it's run to. So 120 volts. Larger buildings typically use 3 phase 480 volts. In at least parts of Canada that's 600 volts. The pole mount transformer outside the house typically gets fed with one of 3 phases at 7200 volts.

Is there any advantage in having a reversible table saw motor like there is for a reversible drill press motor? Maybe turn it into a left-handed table saw instead of right-handed. Actually that's a very good idea! Lots of us lefties are tired of being forced to do things right handed! If they think it's no big deal they should try using left-handed things. I'm glad they finally make left-handed circular saws as well as right-handed. Companies that only make right-handed products should be sued for discrimination!!!

Every one of these videos assumes the audience knows something about electricity. Example here is, right off the bat Matthias starts using electrical terminology and diagrams that does not mean a thing to a novice. I'm lost before 40 seconds goes by. Lines on paper only confuse. Put the pen and paper away and go straight to the motor and forget the theory talk.
