Rewiring an Oddball Motor and Light from a Singer 66

This is a follow up to the recent video "66 a la Mouse" ( • 66 a la Mouse? ). If you recall, the wires from that motor and light were a crumbling mess. I wanted to see if that motor was going to work and if the light could be salvaged. Here's how that all went...

Thanks so much for your videos!! Learning so much!! Well done!! This one really helped me with the same little light fixture. Mine was is good shape, but needed a polishing, which is beautiful now!! Also have that same odd motor, but mine is in good shape with good wiring and runs great. Machine is a 1938 crinkle 66.

That motor looks oddly similar to a crinkle/Godzilla Singer 221, Bob.

Hey Bob great video! I’ve got the same motor and light assembly on a 66 I picked up and fixed up for my wife’s mom. I didn’t rewire it though. But watching this made me want to try myself! Thanks for info. So that lamp wire is safe to use on both the light and motor correct? Can you let me know where you got as well? Lowe’s like the connection plugs? I appreciate the info

Hey Frank, thanks for watching! I buy 250 foot spools of 18 gauge lamp cord. 18 gauge is perfect for wiring domestic sewing machines. I buy mine at Lowes. I buy my plugs there as well. They do have shorter rolls, so you don't need to buy 250 feet!

I have a couple of motors that run as nicely as this one off the machine, but once they're on and under load they make a horrible racket.

Most likely the shaft bushings are shot, not uncommon at all, unfortunately. These motors live long, but hard, lives. The geared drive systems on machines such as the 201-2 and 15-91 put less stress on the motors than belt driven - much less side loads. I usually don't even bother trying to rebuild the "can" style motors anymore. One the bushings start to go, it's a lost cause.
