My grandmother died 2days back. My whole family gathered at my place for her funeral. I thought this would bring us all together for good. But i was so wrong. i have 2 interpretations of this song. 1: the feeling of having to let go of someone because they are losing their love for you and all you can do is support them and their journey. 2: your lover has given up on themself and it’s a mental spiral, saying you will always be there for them however they need it. I like to interpret this as a story of Alex and his journey of falling out of love with a family friend. The story may be of them finally breaking up but meeting up again suddenly during a family gathering. All the aunties and uncles, cousins and family friends. Alex knew she was coming to the event, expecting nothing but disappointment in himself, all the things he could’ve prevented or could’ve changed about them for it to not lead to this point. Seeing her again, not only gave him a hill of emotions but still he thought of only his love for her. She was a very personal person, had the people she needed beside her all the time. She was always trying to be independent but she didn’t need to, she had all the help she needed. Even when Alex came by, he was still a asset that came to her rescue. Only know as “the boy you loved”, Even though he was so much more than that. Maybe he did make horrible mistakes, that explains why he didn’t mind if she hated him. He never said he hated loving her, it was an amazing experience. BUT what makes this song so amazing is how he questions every single thing he has done, till this point was there ever a choice he made by himself? Or was it already written in his life for it to be like this from the start. He feels like it’s unfair, how the relationship turnt out, how he had all these mistakes and horrible qualities about himself. All he wants is just some peace by himself or just some love, he wished someone could be that person that came by, how he was to his Ex-Girlfriend. Maybe he was just in the waiting room.
