The Rexall near us had a great lunch counter; awesome fries and floats. I drove through the old neighborhood with a friend last year and the shape it's in now broke my heart. I thought about that old Rexall on the corner where a bunch of nothing sits now. Time marches on I guess. Like you though, I miss the old lunch counters. Had many a good meal that one and the one at the Woolworth's down the street from Rexall's.

The Rexall Drug Store near me just closed it's doors this past year. Very sad. It had a compounding drug store, a post office, and a wonderful 50's type diner in the back of the store with amazing food, and they were known for their 99 cent breakfast, which was served until the day they closed. I miss the place, it was one of those places you could take guests from out of town and they were amazed such a store still existed. Everyone ALWAYS wanted to have a meal in the diner.

My Dad was a pharmacist and owned a Rexall Pharmacy in Escondido, Ca. I grew up working there since when I was around 6 years old to when I went off to college. Big part of my life and it was always fun “working” there. From sweeping the sidewalk to stock boy to delivery boy, it was a blast. My Dad worked hard but ended up closing the store and ended his career at a big discount drug store. Healthwise, those times weren't better. There were no vaccines or cures for common diseases that could kill or maim people for life. There were no antibiotics either. And until the Elixir Sulfanilamide disaster of 1937, consumer protection laws were almost non-existent. The one good thing about living in such a dangerous world, was that people took epidemics seriously, because they knew diseases could kill you, and if the authorities told you to quarantine or wear a mask, you either did it, or you went to jail, or got quarantined at home with armed guards at the doors and windows to make sure you didn't sneak out and infect people.

In the 1940s, the NBC radio series "The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show" was sponsored by Rexall for several years. There was a Rexall fanfare, and commercials with Griff Barnett as "Your Friendly Rexall Druggist". The show itself was a wild, surreal, domestic sitcom that worked Rexall into the storylines. Many episodes are on KZbin, and are in such good quality sound, that you'd swear they were made in the past few years.

Even added for inflation, Rexall drug stores were much less expensive than today's modern corporation chains. Each store was owned and managed by a person you knew. It's like today's mom and pop stores if there's still any around unfortunately. There was a Rexall drug store in the town where I live , long closed and the owner of the store had a drawing for a brand new bicycle every year around Christmas and no purchase was necessary, just stop by the store and give your name and address.

One Rexall chain was bought out by Dollar General and the name was kept as a store brand for health products we still use.

So many of these places on this channel were gone by the time I was in jr high but I remember going in rexall as a teenager and it being much better than anything we have today. Sadly our rexall closed around 2001 and is now a restaurant. What happened to all these places and why does everything have to be a one stop shop these days? I miss going to the grocery store, hardware store, drug store and butcher shop now we all go to Wal Mart which is probably the most miserable place to have to go.

TheTWO things I remember and miss the most are the lunch counter, and the mix of odors you got as you entered the store. It was a kind of perfumed sweet or alcohol smell, and mixed with whatever was being cooked at the lunch counter. CVS and Woolworths had that also, but it’s Rexall that I miss, along with the 1-cent sales. Shall I also mention the Whitman Sampler end-cap readily in your view?

I remember when the 8th Wonder of the World opened up - the Roseland Plaza. The big draw was the Rexall Drug store which was loaded with all sorts of good things. The store featured a television tube tester which might halt a visit from the t.v. repair man who always had to take the picture tube into the shop anyway.

I went to the Rexall Drug Store in downtown San Diego with my Mom when I was very young. Ironically, that location was taken over by a Thrifty's Drug Store.

Funny that. I was waiting for this one. Born in '70 and remember my home town Rexall. Lost times... To end on a high note, there is an operating Rexall (original signage) in my current approximate neigborhood. God bless 'em.

Had one on main street in my small town as a kid! Use to love to get an ice cream cone or banna split if mom had extra money. Wasn't often, so it was a big treat to sit at that counter!! Mom loved to get a box of Russel Stovers chocalate too!

Thank you for this Rexal Video. We have a Store near Hernando Florida that still has a Rexal Drug store sign up . When you walk in the store, it does take you back in time, the way Rexal Drug stores looked like back in the 30's, 40's, 50's.

I bought my first lipstick with my babysitting money at Rexall Drugs, there was a kind cosmetician behind the counter, that helped me select my lipstick.💄 It had not been used or had been opened by anyone and I liked that❣ My mom would occasionally go to Thrifty Drug, but there, lipsticks had been opened and messed with because they did not have a specific sales lady for the cosmetic section. I would just buy a scoop of ice cream for 5 cents. Those were iconic days of being a child❣

There was a Liggett's near me back in the day, its been gone I'd say all of 35 to even 40 years now. Remember when you'd get a fountain Coke from the snack bar, it would come in one of those white paper cones that they would insert into some kind of metal cup, that era had to be in the mid 60's at the latest.

I remember we had a Liggett's here in the City that I live in and grew up in, here in Central Florida. It really still has much of a small town look and feel to it . As a child in the early seventies we would go to that store to shop and of course to hit the lunch counter also. It was really like a little diner . I don't remember a whole lot about it vividly, but I do remember I enjoyed it. I'm not sure, I'd have to ask my older siblings, but I believe it closed or changed to a different name sometime after that in the 70s.

When I see "A group of private investors purchased the company"....I know what's coming next. Why do seemingly successful companies (like Walgreens) sell to 'investors' when they get a song and dance? They should know whats going to happen. I've seen it time and time again, once they get their foot in the door, all hell breaks loose. The auto dealer I worked for (15 yrs.) got bought up by a huge chain, and then fired our owner and cleared out his office! In all, we lost 15 people, including me.
