You can find plenty of former SF and military in general on youtube making guides for literally all of this stuff + doctrine manuals etc. Lots of them run real-world training classes as well and while I don't personally have an issue with tactics in the show let's not pretend like SF tactics are some highly secretive thing when you can find combat footage, veteran made guides and so on easily online if you take more than 5 minutes to look. Although i'd love to know more specifics on what your real-life cqb experience is.

Not necessarily. While 9mm isn’t the biggest or deadliest round available, by far, it still causes a ton of damage to the muscles & organs it rips through on its way through the body. And when it comes to engaging enemy with decent body armour, smaller rounds can actually be more effective. I do agree with you in the context of this episode/operation however. 9mm probably wouldn’t be their first choice.

Limited rules of engagement. This was an “unofficial” op that Bravo was sent on. That’s why they aren’t wearing their uniforms and aren’t using their signature firearms. Moreover in a situation like this where stealth is the most important aspect especially considering this was an “unofficial” op, you wouldn’t go in guns blazing or with a very lax ROE. That’s why Clay held off. You only kill who you need to kill. Otherwise you are wasting ammo and further risking the security of the operation by killing someone who didn’t need to be killed (if the insurgent was unable to spot Bravo).

It confused me a little bit too when I first watched the episode. I can understand going with PDWs in some of the scenarios in the first half of the episode or the lead up to this, they were operating in confined spaces and at very close ranges so suppressed mp5s aren't a bad choice, plus MP5-SDs are dead nuts quiet thanks to the integral can and sub-sonic ammo. Mounting optics on old school MP5-SDs is a little tricky due to the receiver design, but they're also using MP5K's here as well which is a different variation of the firearm. In the second half though, including this raid, it'd make more sense for them to be using rifles, either HK416s or MK18 ARs with surefire suppressors like usual. The only possible thing I can think of as to why the producers chose to use mp5s is to either just change things up or because of some kind of deal with H&K to feature the weapons, which they already do with the HK416 and MP7. An in-universe explanation would be that this was a clandestine op, where no American boots on the ground were approved, and the MP5 is a more widely used weapon platform, same with 9mm, compared to 5.56 and M4s/416s. Less blowback potential from the host nation if anything went wrong I guess.

@@retrocny5625 solid thinking on this, both first part and second part. My only point to ponder is that 5.56 is NATO standard, so it wouldn’t automatically mean it was the US. Especially if the target was on the radar of multiple countries - but it does give away it was the west, so it being the US isn’t a bad assumption. 9mm could be anybody though.

My only thought on that would be IF the guard had poor trigger discipline and had his finger on the trigger “just cuz” - and if that finger involuntarily spasmed or twitched when he was shot. Or, regardless of how swiftly you enter, sweep, clear a room - some enemy will still manage to get a shot or two off. But I do agree with you. If the guard got a shot off due to a slow engagement time, especially if he’s being engaged by SOF - probably wouldn’t happen. Especially since in this scene, nobody at the target building was friendly or a hostage, so the baddies would be dropping pretty quick. 0.02

Couple reasons to the logic Most military units favor ops in the dark because of one key factor. The opposing force doesn’t have night vision. Moreover, when looking for some form of protection such as cover and concealment, the darkness provides natural concealment (not shown in the scene as Hollywood needed lighting to allow the audience to see what was going on). Besides, the Bin Laden raid? Night time as well. Shots were still fired, a crowd of Pakistani’s investigated and the Pakistani Air Force sent jets to intercept. Not to mention suppressors are actually pretty loud. All it really does is makes the shot harder to find in terms of visual and auditory hints. I should probably mention that I am in no way involved in the military. Just going off of what I’ve heard from many veterans say on podcasts, interviews, etc.

because with AKs in particular, people often have the weapon on fire constantly, due to the way the safety works it is nowhere near as ergonomic as more "modern" weapons so it is often left off. and then as you are shot, and spasm, you engage the trigger.. pretty straight forward not to mention subsonic 9mm isnt exactly a "heavy hitter" cartridge.... and often takes several rounds to down a threat....

People who actually believe SF operators don't use their safety, these days, are stupid. That may be true for SOME people, but the majority of guys train to the extent where their safety offers no impairment at all to their fighting ability, and instead use it as the safety measure it is, rather than treating it like something that gets in their way.

Have you ever seen Basic SEAL training or any military training? Soldiers are taught to have safeties on when not firing. For example in BUDs 234 phase 3, ALL SEALs are literally taught to have their safeties on when not firing. You are right to some extent though. In a situation in which things could pop off at any moment, it is best to rely on finger safety. But when looking at the basics of combat, safeties are on when not firing.

1: Were you in any military unit at all? With the way you’re talking about it, it seems you know so much more than the actual military consultants that are on the show. (Trents actor was in Army SF. Need proof? Look at his arm) According to Jocko Willink, the former commander of Task Force Bruiser, he said that it is important to hold your leaders accountable by telling them that certain actions are not sound decisions. An example of this is recieveing orders to charge a machine gun nest from his superiors. If Jocko received that order, he would disagree with his superiors stating that a tactical disaster would be waiting to happen as the MG nest is fortified, it might be on the high ground, and they may outnumber your force. If a former commander of a SEAL unit said that in many of his podcasts, I think it would be reasonable for tier one operators to discuss poor tactical decisions while in battle. You do realize that if the military consultants got full access to produce the show, you would literally not be able to see anything in this clip. Don’t blame the actors who do their research and learn from the consultants that teach them. Blame Hollywood needing to portray things to an audience.

You are correct in terms of solo room clearing. That is a very dangerous thing to do. If you get hit while solo clearing, you won’t have a battle buddy to send comms over the radio or help cover you. Trent was former US army SF. The show does have high quality military advisors. Ultimately, the only people in this situation you can blame is Hollywood. They wanted Ray to have is revenge moment at the cost of show accuracy.

Watch the show first dude. The NVGs are real, so they can't afford actual quads for every actor. Normally they're rocking 4-16s, or in the new seasons; Noveske's. It was just this one episode, for operational reasons, they were using this particular setup.
