while i agree that her wide stance is a terrible stance to fight from. It is a common training stance used to amplify and teach hip alignment and how to properly position yourself to direct your line of force. However in a sword/lightsaber fight, it is totally useless, and just asking for you too kneecap yourself, get force kicked over, and then be cut into toasty little bits by your opponent.

@@kaoset1237: Fun fact, the Asian guy you speak of is Liang Yang; who was the brawler in the Mission Impossible: Fallout bathroom fight, and was a stuntman for Kingsman: The Secret Service. Clearly it's not the choreographers fault, it's the actors who don't know jack-shit about swordplay, and there was not enough time to teach them since nobody bothered before then. The people in costumes were clearly stalling since the actors missed their cue. A good stuntman has to be given something to work with to be good.

I always thought Vader vs Luke in ROTJ had the best choreography. The prequels are flashing but people are continually leaving themselves exposed to easy kills/maims that the opponent fails to take advantage of.

To be honest, when I watched Rey training I was like "Oh okay, they are doing the whole 'enthusiastic kid doing things wrong and trying to look cool' thingamajic and eventually Luke will come down and say 'you doof, you are doing it all wrong' and it will be cool and nice and heartwarming right" ...Nope. And even then I tried to justify it by going "Oh okay they will now show how clearly superior fighting Kylo is" Huh... Sort of... Nope Kudos to the guy that edited that dagger off though. Probably wasn't the case but I love the idea of someone while recording going "Sir, she ded if we don't take the dagger out"

I really like the OC. It really highlights what I felt was 8's fundamental problem, as much as I enjoyed some of the left wing plot twists (luke tossing the lightsaber? Could totally see him doing that given the stuff he's been through) but there was very little character progression I felt. Even Poe's arc of "becoming a leader" felt soulless because it wasn't his own crew that gave him crap; they just hired a well paid actress who's only real purpose was to be dislikable and well, everyone died. But we managed to cram the resistance in a falcon, so everythings cool, right? XD

Noonooga 000 A lot of those films add in either personal struggles or have them defeated in some way. Die Hard; a fantastic action film, always puts Mclane on the backfoot, beaten and at a disadvantage, struggling just to stay alive. Rocky always gets pummeled before rising back up. Sarah Connor needed to develop as a warrior to protect her son and the future. The Ghostbusters start out as bumbling Fools deatroying an entire hotel yetmanage to make it through to the end by risking it all. Neo gets bested by mr. Smith and Morpheus and needs trinity to save him from an agent. Brody needs a bigger boat because they underestimated the shark. In almost every martial arts movie the hero’s gets beaten, learns and overcomes. Superman struggles with the weight of his responsibilities on a regular basis. The best movies don’t make their heroes invincible, they make them overcome.

Rian Johnson: "These nerds expect a training montage with Luke, well won't they be delighted that their expectations were subverted yet again. I'll have her "train" BY HERSELF! Brilliant! This idea won't come back to haunt her, nope!" Seriously, a good amount of Mary Sue talk would've been knocked down quite a few pegs if she was trained by Luke. They didn't even have to show it! Even an extremely lazy single line saying shes been training with Luke would've helped SO much! They easily could've made the length of time she trained with Luke AMBIGUOUS, imagine that! At least then all the people defending Rey could say "Luke trained her! They didn't show it so who knows what crazy powers she could've learned! Its at least PLAUSIBLE that she learned all this insane shit because shes an amazing student or whatever." Ugh the writing was bungled so badly its really funny. I am sad to admit that I do feel bad for actual Star Wars fans, I really do, especially the hardcore ones who literally have to come up with justifications that aren't in the actual movie to give it the appearance of a movie that cares about its audience and that doesn't treat them like absolute morons. Sad to see millions of people's child like enthusiasm(not poking fun) get curb stomped by a soulless money hungry corporation who doesn't give two shits about what this franchise means to them. Sure, the sequel trilogy is bad. But everything up till there is beautiful. If you really want to get invested watch the prequels and the animated show Star Wars The Clone Wars which is set between episodes 2&3. This bridges a lot of events that happen in that time as well as makes the prequels even better. It also introduces a better female Jedi main character other than Rey called Ahsoka who is Anakin's padawan.

I always thought lightsabre fighting should look most like olympic fencing, since the blade is so destructive and shouldn't need any strength behind it, the speed and reach of fencing styles would work best. Best counter would be 'but it needs to be straight so it'd be awkward', up until Dooku got a curved sabre hilt, since Christopher Lee insisted.

@@valandil7454 And yet that canted grip made his saber so perfect for a fencing style. Allowing for accurate stabs and thrusts without placing the wrist at akward angles. There is a reason Dooku was considered an unmatched lightsaber duelist. Anakin only beat him by duel wielding his and Obi-wan's sabers, and using brute-strength which is what anakin is best known for, to overwhelm Dooku's skillful deflects.

I think lightsabers seriously need a handguard. A weapon that will maim you by the lightest touch needs a completely different approach than a steel sword does. I remember playing "Jedi Knight" 2 and 3 with the "realistic lightsaber" console command. You could chop up stormtroopers by just walking into them with the lightsaber held forward, not even an attack needed. However all the missions where you had allies were horrible because even just turning around could instakill them if you left your saber on. It´s a pretty good showcase of how deadly these things would be, not just to the target, but to the wielder and his surroundings. Also also, I´d say lightsabers would be friggin deadly as polearms. Just attach them to a long rod, its way less dangerous for the wielder but hell to overcome for an attacker because range advantage and the fact that even a light poke can end you. The light-spear wielder doesnt even have to reel back to thrust, just slightly move the arms and wrists.

Don Kanaille Well the old Expanded Universe did have weapons similar to what you mentioned called "Light Pikes". The only problem I see is that the elongated shaft provides an easier target for slicing through than a normal Lightsaber. Then again, there are Lightsaber resistant metals as well so they could use those.
@KanaiIle
@KanaiIle 6 жыл бұрын
Well the idea would be to not have the enemy get close enough to slice the shaft. You can real a spear back quite handily if someody tries to get close, but before they can strike at your shaft they need to pass your blade. And even if they cut the shaft, that´s still preferable to having your arm cut off, which would be the alternative if something like this happens with a regular light saber (and we all know that is quite a frequent problem in Star Wars saber battles). An actual downside would be that your ability to deflect blaster shots would be limited because you cannot spin the blade arounds effectively, but in melee, I´d say its superior even if its just a wooden stick with a lightsaber stuck at the end.

Lightsaber cuts (or burns to be precise) through object with heat, not physical force so touching object is same effective as widest swing in history. Guillotine made from it would be same effective from any height (just little speed-build from gravity and handle weight). But lightsabers don't use kinetic force like normal swords so it's not like hitting somebody from above through 1 kilometer would do more damage than hiting him from 1 milimeter. @@The_Curious_Cat I like to call that "fractal badness". But I do think it's possible to make it far better with only slight alterations. Make Rey lose her duel with Ren, and not being able to read his mind, just be able to resist his probe. Make Ren have a good reason to take only Rey rather than the robot, make Solo have a good way to bypass the planetary shield, get rid of Poe, since he's useless in the movie and his absence during the movie is a plothole of gargantuesque proportions, have Y bomber attack the First Order's weapon, and with only that, you have a far superior movie. Well, maybe not good, but it's definitely better. Of course, to make it good, you'd have to change the environments to be more imaginative, you'd have to put more thought in the McGuffin (cause it's stupid),and more thought into what the First Order's plan is, you'd have to show the republic, or at least to give a good reason as to why you don't show it (like, for example, the Resistance being IN the first Order territory, rather than a nebulous emanation of the New Republic), you'd have to define the setting more clearly, to show that Solo and Leia aren't the same a in Ep IV, and preferably not the same as in ep V and VI either, you'd have to get rid of Anakin's lightsaber, and more generally to have an actual idea about what is it you want to make and tell with your new saga, and what's coming next, two things Abraham didn't have.

The film is not bad because of bad sfx, and I think that you'd really have to have extremely bad sfx for a movie to be bad "because" of his sfx, to be honest. With a better scenario, I would've gladly watched and rewatch SW VII even with bad SFX, even with 1980's level of "bad" sfx (as in "sfx that we aren't accustomed to nowadays and that are inferior in almost any respect to even SW III's sfx").

@nathanbrown8196
@nathanbrown8196 6 жыл бұрын
His points on her lack of skill are very well established but they come from a perspective based off of historical martial arts. Regarding full-on baseball bats swings and there use in canon, power swings were a great way to push past an opponents defensive guard via impact force, even going to far as to knock an opponents weapon into its user. Regarding the reverse grip in Star Wars. A lightsabers omnidirectional cutting ability means that you don't need to swing it. In fact a reverse grip gives you a stronger defense against lighter strikes and is the reason why it's implemented in Jar-kai (I think it's what its called) When dual wielding. When you get in close you can simply push the weapon (lightsaber) into an opponent rather then have to swing. However blocking with reverse grip gets harder the further away from the hilt you are. Which is why most sabers that are used in reverse grip are Shoto-sabers. Or short sword/ dagger length cutting edges. If he took the time to read about the styles. And the lightsaber itself rather than relying on the movies, he would have a greater amount of understanding when picking apart the Star Wars fighting and lightsaber use. But yes Rey is actually absolutely terrible at fighting with a lightsaber. But in her defense she was not properly trained in lightsaber combat despite whatever that short training montage shows. Her experience comes from using a very heavy staff for years.
@petrikokko1441
@petrikokko1441 6 жыл бұрын
You base your view on Star Wars Canon and this is about the Lightsaber as a bladed weapon. Any bladed weapon is best used according to it's qualities which is what this video is about and theory about a theoretical weapon is rather pointless. Of course you can quantify these qualities and make comparisons where the theoretical qualities are weighed in but is that what we really find in the Star Wars Canon literature or is it worthless as a true if theoretical examplar? The basis for any weapon, even a knife, with a edged blade or any blade at all capable of cutting is the cut and thrust.
@nathanbrown8196
@nathanbrown8196 6 жыл бұрын
Petri Kokko You make a valid point. True I'm basing my opinions on canon for a fictional universe. But I am also only referencing the practical applications of the weapon as it's described. You'll note that I didn't use any references to the force or Force powers. In a weapon where all or most of the weight is focused near the hilt, getting hit with a heavy swing will knock the weapon into you. When receiving a heavy blow, at least as far as I am aware in martial practice, you sync with the force of the blow ala impact breathing for martial arts, or moving with the impact of a sword or staff. All I was bringing up was the concept of a heavy swing into a weapon that will have a tremendous amount of give based on the functional aspects of a fantasy weapon. I would also like to point out that the fantasy weapon is an omnidirectional cutting tool which means it cuts in all directions regardless of how it is applied. As such a weapon that can cut in all directions with relative ease can be pushed into a Target rather than needing to be swung. A tremendous Advantage when up close especially when using a reverse grip depending on length. All of my references to anything related to lightsaber fights will always be on the more practical end of the spectrum and less on the Fantastical elements, which should at the very least in my opinion allow it to carry a little more weight. If any of that sounded reasonable to you, then I invite you to from a practical standpoint, refute what I have said.
@petrikokko1441
@petrikokko1441 6 жыл бұрын
Forgive me if I gave such an impression but my interest is not to refute but to bring up points that may enlighten both of us in discussion. It is a fact that broken wrists and having to drop the weapon temporarily to avoid that was very much part of the practical use. You never see it in Hollywood productions but the sword knot was there for use and used it was as either you loosen your grip with possible drop of your weapon or break your wrist which effectively decommissions you. It has nothing to with the mass of the defending weapon but the energy transferred from impact. Even a omnidirectional blade can only cut in the direction it is moved. It is still the old cut and thrust no matter how much more efficient it is compared to other blades. What follows is that it still abides to the same basic scheme of movements necessary to effectively yield it. I'm pure theory in this matter but I took time to learn something since I acquired a 18th century sword and investigated the marks of wear on it. They do indeed correspond to the text books concerning use of such a type of sword so either it saw battle or duel. You mention "pushed into target" which is what is called thrust. All bladed weapons are capable of this to varying degree whereas all bladed weapons are not suited for cutting. This is because all swords are in a way glorified sticks with reach as their primary purpose. Essentially thrust is the typical purposeful move. It is very difficult to ensure disabling effect from a cut but usually when you get a thrust in, it will have greater effect. After all the aim is to disable an opponent trying to do the same to you. Lightsabers are of course part and parcel of the Star Wars universe but their wielding should follow the same rules, with adaption to their differences, as all swords as it is a question of physics and human physique. I agree with the video that the direction concerning the use of lightsabers in the Star Wars films etc. is sloppy, unrealistic and only out for effect. Of course in a fantasy world this is acceptable but it could have been done a bit more realistic without sacrificing dramatic effect.
@nathanbrown8196
@nathanbrown8196 6 жыл бұрын
Petri Kokko Interesting. I don't have anything as useful as an actual sword to compare to. However, if I may make one correction. When I say "push" I do not mean "thrust". It's more akin to a billy club being used to hold back a protestor. It true omnidirectional cutting still functions like any other cutting. But when referencing a weapon like the lightsaber if you're going to compare it two real world fighting I feel it's important to keep the concession of "ease of cutting potential" in mind. This wheel's me back to the original statement I had agreeing with shad that Rey's posture, and training technique is laughable. But the use of full-on power swings and reverse grip with a weapon like a lightsaber has practical uses. And has been implemented into Star Wars' version of martial arts. Which for a lightsaber there are 7. A lot of the points he brings up in the video, have actually been addressed in the series which is the point I was trying to make. This was a very informative comment thread but I think we derailed from the original topic. Are you a HEMA enthusiast? I haven't looked at Hema much as I favor the fantastical aspect of fighting as it's portrayed. I've learned quite a bit from watching Shad's videos however. Yet, the Star Wars themed ones aren't presented in a way that says "he understands the material present in the video that is not directly related to HEMA." One such point is the shortcomings present in the movie fights and the practical/ impractical techniques used. As well as the best way to use a weapon that, from how his reasoning is presented, he hasn't fully researched from a practicality point of view. His reasoning is sound and comes from a background that fully shows his expertise in sword fighting. But his knowledge of the universe he is critiquing doesn't appear to be as extensive.

@DawnfireGalinndan 5 жыл бұрын
@@moodylad2033 This saying actually has two meanings, and I would argue that both of them are applicable to The Last Jedi. "An apprentice that trains themself has a fool for a master" Meaning 1 (Face Value): The Apprentice has a Master who has been designated to train them in their art, and that Master is a fool. In this case, the Master is doing such a poor job at the training that the Apprentice feels they have to take the training into their own hands. If the Master knows about this self-training, and they do nothing about it, the Master is an even bigger fool because they are allowing the Apprentice the opportunity to learn everything wrong. In "The Last Jedi", Luke refuses to train Rey. She came to him with some expectation of being trained in the Force with him as her Master. She makes it abundantly clear that she will continue to train with or without him. He still refuses, and even goes so far as to send her away entirely. He refuses to train her, knowing she will only end up getting hurt, and his attempts at dissuading her from pursuing the path are mediocre dad-with-anger-issues at best. His failure to either train her safely or convince her of the dangers she will face trying to do it alone points to Luke being, in a real sense, a Fool. Meaning 2 (Jedi Word Play): The Apprentice does not have another person to be their Master. They train themself, and thus become their own Master. Master and Apprentice are the same person, and that person is a fool. This meaning points blame at the Apprentice. For one reason or another, they decide that practicing, training, and learning the art by themself is better than being guided by one with knowledge and experience. This opens their training up to many flaws, ineffective methods, and (in the case of learning to use a light saber) serious risk to life and limb. Only a fool would seek to learn everything themself from scratch rather than find someone who can teach them. And here we see that the saying applies to Rey to a T. She is reckless, and impulsive, and in many ways a horrible student. She is so desperate in her pursuit of meaning, of training, that she doesn't even blink at the idea of running away to train with Kylo Ren, who models himself after one of the most feared murder-machines the galaxy has ever seen. Rey is many things. Anti-social. Abandoned. Closed off. Protected by Plot Armor. But above all, she is a fool. So, while the usage of the saying is generally pointed more towards one than the other, this particular usage applies with equal strength to both the Apprentice and the Master. They are both fools. And the Last Jedi was a bad movie.

Threeshades you can dual wield in a fight, but your off hand weapon is usually parrying device. People use short swords or daggers as off hand weapons. In fact there were many dual wielding duelists during the Renaissance period. And there are plenty of manuals on how to properly dual wield. The trick is that you can't use two weapons of the same length, one has to be significantly shorter.

Ahsoka used reverse-grip in her youth, then off-and-on through her adulthood. But she at least had proper training from people who knew what they were doing.
@lapplandkun9273
@lapplandkun9273 2 жыл бұрын
And in the lore of the franchise, the reverse grip is called shien, which is a form of the lightsaber combat or “swordfighting” in the universe. The reverse grip can be explained by the lore of the franchise, except Rey was never trained in the reverse grip. She only uses it because rian clearly didn’t understand what lightsaber forms were and saw ahsoka or any other force wielder and thought “this looks cool” instead of applying over twenty years of lore made for the franchise.

Ahsoka also only used it with her shoto lightsaber (her smaller one) which is very much a "dagger" lightsaber.

The main problem with reverse-grip (as I understand it at least) is that you can´t apply as much force in the offense and when defending, it is far more easy for your opponents to simply break through you parrying. That may be different with light sabers as we don´t really know how much force the wielder can apply to his strikes, and maybe deflecting blaster shots doesn´t need much force at all.
