Join Rey the African penguin as she goes on an adventure through the Aquarium-and wait for the end to hear just how happy a feat it was! She toured the Kelp Forest, took a ride in the elevator and stopped by to say hello to our rescued sea otters!
Our penguins go on regular walks outside of their enclosure as an enrichment-it's terrific stimulation for their mental and physical health-and our little Rey of sunshine loves nothing more than a waddle through the exhibit hall!
She is by far the most eager participant in these extracurricular activities, and Rey is always keen to see how the exhibit hall is coming along in her honorary supervisory role. Having recovered from several cataract surgeries, she's still highly observant of any changes to her environment-and on these waddles, she'll often stop and investigate any new wall, bench or sign that wasn't there on her last waddle.
Rey (short for Monterey) was hatched at the Aquarium as a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Species Survival Plan for the critically endangered African penguin. African penguin colonies like ours serve as a genetic bank to help the recovery of their wild cousins. She’s now about six years old and a joy to work with. Waddle she do on her next adventure?!

What a handsome little man. I grew up in the Northeast US but moved to Jacksonville, FL a few years ago. I still need to get myself to Atlanta now that I live on the GA line, to visit touristy places but especially this aquarium. I think I'll surprise my daughter next time she comes to visit, we'll take a weekend mini vacation within her vacation to head up to ATL! :)
