Heard a part of this song on IG and thought it sounded beautiful. I finally find it and to my disappointment I hear the lyrics "Bibinii broni" and "Tuntum broni" lol. I want Ghanaians to do better, I really do. That whiteness has to be called upon to validate the beauty of a black woman. That whiteness has to be the standard, the default, the epitome when we’re talking about beauty and admiration. That a beautiful black woman can’t be just that - a beautiful black woman - without being referred to as a ‘(black)-white’ person.... it saddens me. Don't get me wrong, I don't necessarily think this was meant to be malicious. The fact of the matter is these unfortunate metaphors are deeply rooted in colourism, and much deeper in the colonial experience. It is the reflection of a colonial mentality to have Africans feel the need to use phrases such as “mi broni” and “tuntum broni” to extol their love interests who’re obviously African. After all, wasn’t it during the colonial experience that we were taught that everything ‘white’ was aspirational, admirable, to be desired, and everything ‘black’ on the other hand, disdainful, repulsive and to be abhorred? I want us to unpack what colonialism has done to us; what it's done to how we think about each other, and do better. It's 2019, there's no reason why we should still be describing ourselves like this. I wish I could support but I can't. Good luck to you though.

Fair point but to reduce the overall beauty of the song to a phrase you disagree with is gravely unfortunate. So much goes into making music..sound, lyrics, production of instrumentals etc. So to listen to a piece like this and write a whole dissertation criticizing the use of a phrase is unfair. Activism goes beyond calling people out on their lack of political correctedness whenever you get the opportunity. If you listen carefully and truly appreciate the linguistic context it was used in, there clearly wasn't any malice intended. Artistes need to be themselves in writing and not boxed into expectations of individuals. This is a lovely song, affirming one's, love written and produced by a brilliant artiste. Well done Reynolds!
