My Uncle flew the F-4 and F-15. Have an old homemade VHS of us at Edwards in California where he was training the Germans on the F-4. Back then you could go out on the flight line as a civilian. The Phantom was, and still is the sexiest fighter to ever Grace the sky. And those J79’s would shake you to the core. God I miss those jets.

The F-4 Phantom is one of the most legendary aircraft ever made. The McDonnell Douglas Corporation created some of the greatest aircraft known to man. The A-4 Skyhawk, F-101 Voodoo, F-4 Phantom and Phantom II, AV-8B Harrier II, the F-15 Eagle and Strike Eagle, the F-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. Badass jets flown by badass pilots!!
@jcavilia1 Жыл бұрын
McDonnell and Douglas were separate companies when most of those planes were created. They merged in1967. The A-4 was Douglas, the F-101, F-4 and F-15 were from McDonnell. The F-18 was a joint project of McDonnell and Northrop, and was developed from Northrop's YF-17, which was built for the Air Force lightweight fighter competition but lost out to the General Dynamics F-16.

I helped build these birds at McDonnell back when. I worked this program from mockup to somewhere about number 2,000 before leaving the company. Brings back some great memories. Now, I write some great adventure books, I guess my experience sort of gave me a fantasy mind. Dr Robert E McGinnis I would love to keep in touch with any of you that might have worked on the F4 project.

God I miss this, I was a crew chief on these particular birds for the last 2 years of their service with NVANG. I remember this day, also remember prepping for the Sageburner 2 trials. It was definitely emotional launching the last 6 that were heading for Spain. The flight line was empty and lifeless for a couple months after that.....until our "new" C-130's arrived, what a let down.

Much like a P 51, certain aircraft have an unmistakable sound. With jet aircraft, the Phantom has that sound that no other jet fighter has.

F-4's are amazing aircraft, I've seen them in action, the Hellenic Air force still uses them for training and new pilots, they are a spectacular aircraft and ahead of their time for that era.
That's some low stuff there. Some of those guys in the Nevada Air Guard were a little crazy, but crazy skilled, too. My dad flew with them for more than a decade. He retired just before the Phantoms arrived, but he did some memorable buzz jobs in the F-101, the B-57, and the F-86 (way back in the late 50s). Thanks for sharing the memorable desert landscapes.

As a kid (15 or 16) out here the Phantoms were always an attraction. We shot at a Trap and Skeet at a club on Jack's Valley road in Minden for years and years. The entire area is a big gated golf course community now, but I digress. One of the folks that was always there was an NVANG Phantom pilot. He was always talking about doing a fly by of the club house one day. No one ever thought he'd do it. One day 2 Phantoms come zipping by maybe 1500 ft up, back and forth and everyone one just know it was that guy. The my dad, a Vietnam Vet, looks up the mountain face (Genoa Peak) and says plug your ears. Of course none of us listened we were to busy trying to see what my dad clearly had already seen, when a Phantom came screaming over the club house about 400 ft off the ground and nailed the afterburners headed east across the Carson Valley. My dad said that guy never had to buy another drink at the club house. Cool times, cool memories.

We called 'em "hogs" when I was stationed at Ubon, Thailand in '68-'70 and the air force never had a more reliable airplane - the abort rate was almost zero. Just before I arrived on station Col Robin Olds became a "triple ace" shooting down 16 Migs and the Wolfpack was known for air-to-air combat. The F-4 was awesome and I'll never forget the 100+ ship "revenge" mission that took out half a mountain and an "11 level" gunner in Laos.. Love this fighter plane!!!
@edchapman58017 жыл бұрын
I stand corrected about Robin Olds having 16 Mig kills - he had 12 kills during WWII and with the 4 he nailed over North Vietnam he did total 16 altogether. Wing headquarters at Ubon had the number 16 on display and I naturally got my figures skewed but that was almost 50 years ago. The 8th did account for 24 Migs during the Vietnam War (7 in one day) the most of any other wing. By the way, I like the music even if I am 74.

Talk about something that'll rock your world I sure was glad it was pretend fighting because those boys knew how to deliver a punch. They were down on the deck right on top of us. The copilots waved as they flew over. I could only imagine what a couple of 500 lbs. Bombs would to a column of tracked vehicles. Well we saw what they did in Libya and Iraq.

This was the front line fighter when I was in the Navy. If a pilot got a mig kill on a mission they would request a high speed pass with a victory roll. They would fly at flight deck level, just shy of breaking the sound barrier...pass the boat then pull up into a unrestricted climb rolling several times. Something you just don't forget, too bad we didn't have the video cameras today. Thanks for posting!

Good comment Daniel! Most people think that those angles were some type of revolutionary design but in reality they were aerodymanic band-aids to keep the F-4 from going unstable. Today July 1 2013 Fighter Squadron 71 (German Air Force) retires its last active F4 squadron. I did read that 25 F4's from the German Air Force have been offered to the Chech. Republic. Met a guy at the Pima Air Museum here in Tucson and he had quite a story about a B-58 take off (full afterburners on 6 J-79 engines) from San Diego many years back. I guess the guy broke a lot of windows.

Those angles on the F4 wingtips and stabilator (Navy speak) became necessary after the F4 received the J79 engines and became a real Mach 2 aircraft. The aircraft became unstable above Mach 2 so this little fix was thrown in. I read a story with some quotes by General Robin Olds (deceased and retired) It was said the F4 had such poor aerodynamics but so much power it did not matter if it was flying straight at you or sideways towards you, just did not matter. Call the F4 Rhino
