Met these guys just around the time they signed to Relapse, they gave me their Ramses demo and I remember being blown away at just how different they sounded. The level of brutality coupled with their incredible composition stood out from other bands hitting the scene at the time. Kept up with them until around Annihilation of the Wicked. Was sad to hear that Dallas parted ways with them much later on.

Speaking as an old school DM head (I'm pushing 50), I discovered Nile on their In The Beginning comp and loved them immediately; I got an Emperor vibe from their atmospheric tendencies. Awesome overview!

Laureano's drumming on Shrines >>> everything that smelly Turk Kollias has ever done with them, at least from a compositional standpoint.

Cool episode. I love everything up through Ithiphallic. After that I can take it or leave it. Festivals of atonement is underrated. Black seeds was a big deal to me and still is. Wind of Horus is my favourite song on Darkened shrines. Lashed to the slavestick is vicious. Ithiphallic references the doomy style of Festivals. Saw them a couple of times in different line ups, always crushing!

Nile is one of my favorite bands ever even though Im more of an Scandinavia/Europe DM fan. Shrines is my favorite DM album ever. thanks for mentioning Candlemass and Trouble. I personally love them most not when they are blasting but when they go atmospheric. Wrought, To dream of Ur, Unas and 4th Arra come to mind. The Egyptian parts are my favorite and people who get bummed out on that are missing the point. I actually wrote to Karl asking if he would ever do a full doomy DM album under the Nile name or maybe another band. I knew he would say not with Nile but he was gracious about it. The churning you mention actually sounds Egypyian somehow. That Karl, Dallas era isn the shit

I used to hate black seeds. I quit listening to them when that album released. Now I listen to that album probably the most. That and in their darkened shrines and amongst the catacombs which is still my favorite. Took over 20yrs for me to appreciate black seeds.

Derek Roddy's drumming with Nile is the epitome of the extremist's extreme metal. Sure, there are more seemingly fancy drummers out there, but that frenetic relentless pounding that grooves is just ... [insert superlatives here] good. It is musicianship on the highest level, and I don't even like Nile that much. That being said, I would love to hear Lars Johansson do his version of Cryptopsy.

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 I think it's Ityphallic there's just a song in there with Karl doing a Cobra and doodling on his guitar but in a stone reverb chamber and it's totally Egyptian bro. I should listen to it again. I like the growling.

Late to comment; busy time. Only listened to Nile through guitar covers so I hadn't been too interested since it's not usually my cup of tea. Their early stuff sounds good though.

Nile remains the sole exception in my general distaste for any death metal labeled as ‘brutal’ or ‘technical’. Their earlier albums especially tickle me pink because of just how rich and flavorful they are. However, every Nile album is fantastic, even without the guidance of Mr. Toler-Wade. I heard you namedrop Angelcorpse a little in this video. What do you think about them? Their mix of Morbid Angel and Bestial Warlust is really unique, and pretty much everything they’ve done is top notch in my opinion. Even their own Heretic has a lot of charm to me. Fantastic video as always!

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 People will hate me for saying it, but Inexorable suffere from the nothing but blastbeats drumming, no matter if i fits the riffs or not. I love Laureano's work with Nile, but that Angelcorpse album is kinda ruined by the drumming.

I can definitely see that. I think Longstreth's stuff on Exterminate kinda fit the band a little better. Laureano's stuff in Nile is wild though, honestly pretty subtle stuff especially during the slower parts.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Mortal Decay. For the slamming stuff my favorite has always been Vomit Remnants. I usually tend towards more old school stuff for the brutal death metal: Suffo, Baphomet, Pyrexia, Pyaemia, Dehumanized, Ceremony, Polluted Inheritance, Swollen, Repudilation, Prophecy, Iniquity, etc. Enmity is fun if you want to hear something really crazy.

Ithy-Phallic Cool riffs Cool atmospheres Bad songwriting I really want to like Nile, i did enjoy amongst the catacombs and annihilation of the wicked back in the day, but so much of their compositions just seem to meander around with no direction. Annihilation has some of their best songwriting and i think thats because they incorporated way more simple old school heavy metal song structures then they had previously. If you compare the arrangements in Nile to a band like Deeds of Flesh their mediocrity becomes very stark
