Green Polymer Nanocomposites
Alexander Orlov has made significant contributions to environmental protection and sustainability efforts throughout his career. The majority of his research at Stony Brook University focuses on new ways to create and apply nanomaterials to solve challenging issues.
Producing a new generation of polymer nanocomposite materials can deliver superior performance while reducing weight and environmental impact. Orlov received a TAF Class of 2023 investment for his project, Green Polymer Nanocomposites. “What excites me most about this award is that now I can explore this innovative approach to its full extent,” said Orlov. He explained that his patented technology addresses problems associated with the world’s current addiction to synthetic plastic products.
Plastics are made from large molecules called polymers. By adding cellulose, a natural material that can be extracted from plants, to the polymers, Orlov aims to make plastic production more sustainable by reducing the amount of energy needed for polymer production. His innovation will also improve human health by decreasing the amount of plastic in the environment.
TAF is helping Orlov get the data needed to apply for other sources of funding, both from federal sources and from private equity, needed to move his environmentally-friendly technology to the marketplace.
