It's always nice to see how far DJI has come in technology terms. That Phantom 2 Vision camera looked more like a toy camera than anything else, nowadays they come standard with 3-axis gimbal, capable of higher resolution for video and a more robust system and app.

Thanks for the nice review. I guess this is a reall neat option to get started for a beginner. And it looks way more advancd than an ardrone. The wifi extender and using smartphone for fpv is really smart!
@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! As with *most* things that DJI does, this seems to be well designed system, and we think you're exactly right describing it as a more advanced AR.Drone. While we were making this video, Techinstein described it as the "AR.Drone killer." It's a nice step up from the AR.Drone in that it has a (more or less) conventional hobby radio, so beginners can start to get used to a conventional system, rather than using a touch screen for control. In fact, everything about the Vision seems to have been designed to make it easy for beginners -- and that's great! We're glad to see more people coming into the hobby, provided that they fly safe!

I just bought the phantom 2 H3-2D. I'm wondering if there's a way of having a wifi link to smartphone like in the phantom 2 vision? I know there's video downlink and receivers but I'm not interested in FPV. i just need the wifi video for orientation and basic OSD like the vision app provides. Thanks.

@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Before I would presume to give you any advice, I'd like to know a little bit about your background... Have you flown RC before -- specifically helis or multirotors? If you haven't flown before, and I know this is going to come across like I'm telling you to eat your veggies when all you really want is to dive right in to desert, but I'd suggest starting with something other than your new Phantom. Specifically, I'd head out to your local hobby store and pick up a Blade MCX-series micro heli or a high-quality flight simulator (like RealFlight or Phoenix). The Phantom 2 Vision is easy to fly, but nonetheless it isn't a skill you can take completely for granted -- and I wouldn't want to see you bust up your machine right out of the box. Take advantage of the time you have before your new bird arrives next week to build some fundamental skills -- either with a simulator or a micro-heli -- and make your first mistakes with a machine that doesn't cost $1,200. Also, DJI manufactures propeller guards you can mount on your Phantom -- to prevent the propellers from striking objects or the ground (if it tips over on landing). Again, if you're a new pilot, that's going to save you some grief. If you want some additional background, check out our Beginner's Guide to Building and Flying an FPV Multirotor (RFTC: A Beginner's Guide to Building and Flying an FPV Multirotor (2013)). Thanks for watching -- and good luck! Let us know how it goes!

***** Good advice. I have many years of r/c heli flying, going back to the glo fuel days, and before I bought my vision, I picked up a helimax 1sq and flew the blades off of it, resulting in effortless nose in and very good control. If you can fly the 1sq, I anticipate the vision will be quite easy to master. Good luck!

@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Hey, Michele! Thanks -- glad you enjoyed the video! We didn't notice any jello at all... The video you see from the Phantom 2 Vision in our video is straight out of the camera -- no post processing at all. What you see is what you get. As to whether or not it will work with your iPhone 4, we can't say for sure because we're on Android phones. However, our best guess is that it will, and you can check for yourself by downloading the software right now from the app store for free. It should tell you whether or not it's compatible with your hardware before you actually go ahead and buy something.

I wonder if the LiPo cells are removable? It'd be nice to be able to make a custom pack for it.
@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Let me put it this way: I don't think DJI designed with the intention of it being removable, but with a moniker like "KillerRC," I'm sure you appreciate that there isn't much that can stand in the way of a motivated hobbyist with a flat-head screwdriver. For liability's sake, I had probably better add that I wouldn't recommend trying it and, furthermore, the charger is a simple plug-in -- without a balance lead -- so our guess is that the cell balancing is occurring inside the battery cartridge itself. Obviously that could go all kinds of wrong (the flaming variety in particular) if you got into this thing and somehow damaged or disabled the balancing system.
@pb2themax11 жыл бұрын
***** Probably true. I hate proprietary battery packs. I prefer the usually cheaper and higher capacity LiPo packs that are out there.
@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
KillerRC I'm 100% with you on that point myself. However, I don't think that this product was made with us in mind. I think it's been specifically designed and built for beginners, and they have deliberately removed all of those "rough edges" that we accept as part of the hobby so that new folks aren't intimidated. And, if that means that all of the components are proprietary and people have to buy replacements straight from DJI, I'm sure that they're sobbing all the way to to bank.
@pb2themax11 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah. It's a $180 3S 5200mAh LiPo? Sheesh. I could make a 6000mAh for $50.

@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we learned the "old school" way, as well... It can be awfully frustrating (and expensive) to find out for yourself which parts work and which parts don't, and just getting the machine to fly correctly -- all the basics you can take for granted if you buy a Vision. But, like you said, we learned a lot along the way and now we can share it with these new folks coming along...

A lot of so called 'Fly aways' don't have anything to do with DJI. For example, I bought this one and took this review as my manual. Roswell did not wait for rapit green light so RTH will land the Vision on the spot Home was found. With the antenna aimed to the quadcopter the range is limited. The repeater is pointing up to the sky and will limit the range also. Now we know better, a starter not reading the manual wil blame DJI for a faulty RTH, video quality and losing signal.

@Sorted699611 жыл бұрын
The thing about Phantom2 is the Wifi part. Dont know if it' records or views well whilst flying around a city with so much wifi trafic. However GoPro connected to a transmitter is radio frequency and you can adjust it to an independent frequency, zero interference. The phantom also allows more add on's such as When it comes to filming you can add a gimbal which maintains absolute stability and instead of viewing it on your phone you can have a set of fat shark goggles which are way more submersive and is able to help you film better. There is also the head tracker on that which syncs the gimbal to the movement of your head.. I think Phantom have jumped to quickly in bringing out the Phantom2. Its as if theyre catering for people who are too lazy to source their own props and form that special bond with their drones :)
@Sorted699611 жыл бұрын
Oh and I forgot to mention how much cheaper spare batteries are! :)
@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Mindful Eyeam Hey, Mindful! As far as I'm concerned, everything you said is correct -- but I think that's a very deliberate choice that DJI has made. They aren't trying to sell the P2V to you, or me, or anyone else who is currently flying FPV. It isn't intended for anyone who is flying anything right now -- it's intended for the mass market as a lifestyle accessory. They are trying to take FPV mainstream, and every facet and detail of the P2V has been built with that in mind... It's an amazing and audacious and slightly frightening thing that DJI is trying to do -- and it's going to make this an interesting decade for all of us.

You don't need two people calibrate the Phantom. Just set down the controller when its light goes yellow.
@Roswellflighttestcrew194711 жыл бұрын
Good point! Thanks for the tip!
@mblitch11 жыл бұрын
***** And when calibrating, Phantom flyers do what is often called the 'compass dance'. Instead of moving the aircraft by grabbing and twisting it, which brings in more dips and weaves as it turns, they will hold the aircraft and pivot around it as the center point. So essentially you walk in a circle twice, keeping the CG as stable as possible on its axis. Much less of a chance in bumping things that way.
@trevorwilburn882411 жыл бұрын
I do it like they did in the start up video with Collin Guin demonstrating how to set it all up. Also I've found that if it's just futile to get a solid green light going before taking off, actually getting it into the air even just a few feet can sometimes help it attain better satellite reception.
@bigh777711 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind you can also rotate you body while holding the P2V stationary while calibrating instead of standing still and rotating the P2V. Just personal preference I guess.

On takeoff or landing, one gets ingested in an engine and the plane goes down. If a fucking goose can do it, so can a plastic drone.
@OdeeOz10 жыл бұрын
Technology versus foreign object damage isn't you're long suit , is it? A pilots helmet can destroy a jet engine, and it weighs about what that drone does. Point of fact, a Zippo lighter ingested into an F4's engine destroyed not only the engine, but the plane. So now, who is the low info guy again?

I don't think that I like this one for the same reason why I gave away my AR Drone. Too proprietary, it doesn't use standard batteries and I would bet that they are much more expensive than the ones that I use with everything else I own. I could probably build one from a kit that has all of the same functionality and costs less than half of this model. This is like the iPhone of quads, if you never buy anything other than this you are good, otherwise I'd pass.
