Originally I wanted any car but a Tesla. After driving them all, Tesla was the only car that gave me the confidence that the battery and drivetrain would hold up and that I would be able to charge it without hassle. I'm now at 1 year of ownership and my love for the car has only grown. Software updates have brought features to my car that didn't exist when I bought it. Every other ICE car I've driven feels slow, loud and janky (thanks to automatic transmissions) by comparison, not to mention fueling and maintenance costs associated with fossil vehicles. Tesla charging network is absolutely rock-solid with no hassle. At this point, I really can't imagine owning and driving any other car besides the Y, be it gas or electric.

Teslas are great cars in many ways, and I agree that a lot of people complain more than necessary. But the whole panel gap thing and the crappy quality of the paint that has started an entire industry of PPT, is not just people noticing it suddenly when they wouldn’t in the past. With current pricing, perhaps it’s acceptable, given that Tesla’s pricing is so low now. But the way panel gaps were in the past, and the cheap paint that got so easily damaged, combined with the pricing in the past was unacceptable and it would have been an issue for the owner of any car of that price. I’ve never had a bunch of panel gaps or such crappy paint quality in any car I’ve owned, until I owned a Tesla. FWIW, I’ve owned VWs (usually GTI), BMW 3 series, various Audis, and a Kia Stinger GT2. None of them had panel gaps. Anyway, with all that, it’s still a great purchase for most.

Good video. Re range, the EPA, not the manufacturer, sets the rules for how range is calculated and certifies the published range on its web site and Monroney label included on a manufacturer's window sticker. If you drive differently than the EPA rules used to determine range, then (surprise) your range will be different (and probably less than what the EPA publishes). The EPA probably needs to revise its EV highway range calculations/procedure to be more realistic with how people actually drive.
@DanX15711 ай бұрын
If you use the energy screen, the estimated range is very accurate. In my testing Ihave found that you need to drive about 65mph constant speed on the freeway to achieve the rated efficiency. (Without braking and accelerating... which is ridiculously slow and not possible or practical in most situations I know).

I have 66k miles on my 2020 MY. I drive conservatively, but because of the factory set camber, I saw severe, equal wear on the insides of all four stock tires so that rotation would have been a waste of money. My much stiffer compound Coopers are wearing much better. Front bushing noise started two months ago and the Tesla shop said I needed new upper and lower control arms. I guess the lesson learned is to sell your Tesla before the warrantee runs out. Also, wait at least a year before you buy a new model. So, I'll wait at least that long before I buy a cyber truck, but will more than likely get the R2T. CT just too damned expensive.

3:25 I agree. With the introduction of the model three, and then the model Y people who otherwise, or not necessarily those that were interested in the automotive industry are now interested, which is great but, you have a whole new group of people who are hyper analyzing vehicles that are more expensive Than what has traditionally been purchased, and they are looking at cars with a more observant eye. Yes, Tesla has had some quality control issues with ramping up mass production, but also has almost every other car manufacturer. Some of these people need to go look at a McLaren and see the panel gaps. Lol.

The wheel covers...what a great idea. I see they are pre order, so no reviews yet..but anything to alieviate the stress of an accidental curb scrape.
@gabem811911 ай бұрын
@Gjeebs @2:02 FYI, wheel offset is where the center hub sits, negative more towards the inside or positive more towards the outside. Positive offset has the spokes near the outer edge of the rim while a bigger negative offset, -35, will have the spokes nearer to the inner edge of the rim giving it a deep “tub” look if that makes sense. More common on muscle cars with really wide rear tires. You’d use wheel spacers to move wheels outwards to line up with the edge of the fender or a can use a wider wheel if it’d fit without rubbing anything.

I am curious to see how a statistically significant number of MYs and M3s are doing 10+ years in. I know there is some data on the MS but it’s a small data set. The main concern would be battery aging (regardless of miles) but also long term quality.
@aerostorm_10 ай бұрын
Depends a lot on how you treat the battery. Model 3/Y mainly use the 2170 Panasonic cells made in Nevada. Model 3 SR is the only exception which uses the CATL LFP cell. As well as there were some few Model Y's that used some of the earliest of Tesla's in-house 4680 cell. The model S/X use the somewhat older 18650 Panasonic cells. The 2170 and 18650 have a similar chemistry, and I would expect similar behavior. The LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) and Tesla's 4680 NMC (Nickle Manganese Cobalt) batteries are really the only major different battery chemistries in production right now. Everything else uses NCA (Nickle Cobalt Aluminum) or the non-Tesla NMC battery manufacturing process.

Thanks. I guess the gist of my question is this. I have an 8.5 year old Acura RDX with 82K miles on it. So I put about 10K miles per year on my car. I could easily keep it for another 8 years and 80K miles. Could I expect to do the same with an EV? Based upon age and not mileage? My concern being the battery. I plan to buy an EV next. But this is the question that is on the minds of people I think who are not leading edge adopters.

Great Video. But really disagree with your statement about being some people "hyper-analyzing" the quality and complain about few "imperfection" on the Tesla Quality. I own both S and Y. Love the car's tech portion of it, but really hate the build quality. Panel gaps, uneven door placement, cabin noise issues due to improper plastic adjustments, missing screws, rubber seal coming off, are only the beginning. American Car manufacturers will continue to lag behind Japan and Korea, or even China EV makers on the quality build with these type of acceptance to inferior quality builds and influencing people that it's OK and acceptable for poor build quality. Just my 2 cents.
