I’ve listened to this young man play this a few times and my mind is blown. I played harmonica as a kid and thought I was doing pretty well. I even got a Hohner Chromatic at one point and it was difficult for me to play. This young man is genius. He played that whole Rhapsody from memory, the piano player had the music in front of him. I used to watch the Harmonicats as a kid but this boy is leaps and bounds ahead of anything they did. Bravo to you sir.👍👍🇨🇦

Please enlighten us with what does not please you in this performance. Please give us all a detailed understanding as mere mortals like us can never ascribe to such performance heights. The piano player has music. The person with the harmonica has it all committed to memory!
@robertdavidson44186 жыл бұрын
+ William Lee. They are both excellent. However their circumstances are very different. the excellent, amateur I imagine, Harmonica player has, in all likelihood, been learning and perfecting his performance for a number of - probably many - months, if not a year or more, so has learnt it without a great effort, probably effortlessly; the presumably professional ( judging by his performance of a taxing piece of accompaniment - without a page-turner as well, I note,) pianist has probably had sight of this music for a matter of a day or days, probably a week at most, and possibly only a matter of hours depending on how many other contestants he has had to accompany. Sight reading is his stock-in-trade of course, but they may have only had time for a few run - throughs - maybe even only a couple, or even one - of the music together. This I gather from the slight hesitancy at a few key junctions, though I think they are very sensitive to one another. Others have commented on the balance between the players; there is nothing magical about that - it is the job of the accompanist to be sensitive to the instrumentalist(s)/ vocalist(s) they are accompanying and only a poor one ( which this one isn't) would drown or overbalance the soloist/ ensemble.

@Milton Moore Why does it matter so much to you
@DownhillAllTheWay5 ай бұрын
@@mysty1353 Thanks for that - I had never heard of the link beetween Larry Adler and George Gershwin. I just looked it up, and there was some sort of link between them - but I'm not sure that it's what you believe it to be. Gershwin wrote the orchestral composition Rhapsody in Blue in 1924 (at the age of 26). Larry Adler was born February 10, 1914, so he would have been 10 years old when Gershwin was writing RiB. I see that Adler became a great exponent of the piece, and may have worked with Gershwin in writing a harmonica arrangement of it - though I can't find any evidence of even that. Gershwin lived 12 years after writing it. There's a nostalgic KZbin here of Larry Adler playing duet with George Gershwin - but it's nostalgic because Gershwin isn't there. It's a player piano - supposedly using a roll played by Gershwin - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGjTdJiAm6l-bNE Incidentally, if I may also enter the fray - I also think of a "song" as something that is sung, with words. It is defined on ther Internet as "a short musical composition of words and music." Rhapsody in Blue has no words. I think the error may come from MP3 players, which refer to each track as a "song" because they are designed for playing songs - but mine is used almost exclusively for playing audiobooks - and it refers to each chapter as a "song".
