Rhapsody in C was written between May 2022 and September 2023.
It commenced as a sonata-like theme and then developed through various twists and turns of ideas, with waves of romanticism, emotion and drama. A final victorious-sounding theme was added as the final part.
I might have wanted this to be my second sonata, with three movements (sort of), but I couldn't bring myself to call it a sonata. A rhapsody seemed more fitting.
I deliberated long and hard about naming the piece, e.g. 'Sonata-Rhapsody', 'A Rhapsody in Waves', 'Rhapsody of Life' .... but in the end I just kept it simple!
An old friend, who is familiar with my musical influences described it as 'Beethoven meets Pop'. I thought that was pretty accurate. There are parts that I think sound a bit like Haydn, Beethoven and Rachmaninov, and a touch of Neil Sedaka pop songwriting thrown in along the way. My daughter even thought it sounded like Elton John. I can't quite hear that, but maybe I'm too close to it right now!
