The problem with those videos is that, understandably so, about halfway through it they start to just give everything a middle to low score because they're starting to get a bit full on a very heavy barrage of sweet sugary stuff. 20 bites into a flurry of different cakes you naturally aren't as excited about it anymore. It also just doesnt fully work at a conceptional level without taking a break and cleansing the pallet between each bite. Small bits in your mouth leftover and the general aftertaste messes up the taste of the next thing. This is most visible in Link in these videos, about halfway through you can see he's starting to have had enough.

Link said a key sentence around 6:24 that i think is vital to the Link scoring discourse. "If it's really good, that's when it matters." The whole goal of gut check is to select the top 3 versions of whatever they're trying. Anything else is kind of irrelevant, so the difference between giving something a 5 vs giving it a 50 doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the shock value of a low/weird score is more entertaining than being particularly scientific about it. Also I saw a video once that plotted every score either of them had given and Links was a pretty solid bell curve. About what you would expect, most things scored as average.

I think it’s because most people expect him to use logic whereas he uses more emotion. For example when he said, “it’s good, it’s good that it’s that simple. Maybe this is controversial but it seems people (with exception of Link) always weigh the scale towards the good side. To me a 50 would be I'm not mad at eating it but there's nothing special and anything lower is me actively disliking it and anything below 30 would be hating it. Anything above 70 is really good and worthy of eating on a regular bases

Honestly I think a lot of people forget that 50 is not "bad", it's the "it's ok" in the midde, neither good nor bad. The fact thay everyone complains about Link's scores baffels me, especially when Rhett is like "ugh no I don't like this... 68!", like that's an above average score... And when link's like "that's okay, I'll give it a 43" people freak out about how low it is - it's just below average, it's not a bad score! If everyone scored like Rhett you could just remove the bottom 50 points

yeah i think the 'problem' with it is that they never established a common interpretation of the 0 to 100 scale. they both have different interpretation of what a 0 or a 100 means. and both their interpretations are probably influenced by the fact that rhett generally loves food and link is a picky eater lol

I do think visual aids helped Link direct his feelings, though even before that I usually like his ratings! I don't often agree with them, but I appreciate that he rates purely on _his_ own tastes. I think Rhett tries to raise his to balance out Link's willingness to give instinctual scores. Or maybe Rhett just tries to give School Grades instead of going off of the idea that 50 means Alright, lower is meh to bad, and above 50 means good to great... Entertaining regardless 😅

I think Link's problem is that he's often not giving a score based on what he's actually experiencing. There's some thought process going on in his head where he's trying to give scores that "sound good" instead of just legitimately scoring the thing he's eating. You can tell because Rhett almost always scores first, and a lot of the time Link's scores are clearly influenced by Rhett's. That part where he says he "can't remember" what he scored the maple donut, which is why the bar score was so different, is also a tell. He shouldn't have to remember it if he's just naturally reacting and scoring. But he's not doing that. He's using some arbitrary criteria in his own brain to find a "good sounding number."
